Putting a pigeon amongst the cats we are back with that good shit. An out of step, incidental artefact of peaceful sophistry: YS - Brutal Flower (2 x “12 LP). A no airs and graces piece of cool future-proof ambience. A modern ballad for brave young clubbers, local pubbers, slipstream warriors, and emotional doggers. 

The distinctive aesthetic hallmarks of YS are all here: slabs of urban flavor from emotional interior; raw data straight from the interface. Both hopeful and mourning: this is the lay of the land in Brutal Flowers. It feels young in an ancient sort of way: pure as first snow. Unfolding with the patience, tranquility and the expansive poise of a work that is for now and always. Pulsating and gently to assured - a flickering skyline, swarming with warm memories. 

An aesthetic reflection of a creative process that is delicate and restless. Created in the edges, where long distances, fast cities and global melancholia are wrought large. Burning the midnight oil Berlin-Singapore style: from real to reel. A sentimental exercise of modern faith by old friends. With a nudge and a wink, Brutal Flowers is a (de)coded map of memories wavering with familiar intrigue. Patient listeners and the already initiated will be rewarded on revists - as playful & profound as you please, as deep as the heart. 

The scathe that cuts is clean and deep. There are no sleight of hands to be found in this opus, only hearts are worn on the sleeve here. 

If this is the final dance music boss, then so be it.

Jiyoung Wi is a multi-faceted artist from Seoul, Korea currently residing in The Hague, Netherlands. Jiyoung’s work can be situated within fictional literature, improvised music, field recording, with an interest in juxtaposing or disjointing these fields of practice through her sonic and literary methodologies. Jiyoung’s debut album 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕 𝑨𝒍𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒊𝒆𝒔, is a concise body of work that punctuates a beginning point to her work within the 12” LP format. The recording serves as one of the two releases concluding the three year sonic endeavor that is the ENXPL (Enmossed X Psychic Liberation) series.

Having previously released recordings on compilations for labels like Mirae Arts, Eastern Nurseries, and Psychic Liberation, here Jiyoung hones a cinematic-like structure that exemplifies the biome within her craft. While presently Jiyoung is performing the systematic dismantling of a violin in her live improvisations paired with approachable boutique synthesizers, 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕 𝑨𝒍𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒊𝒆𝒔 is a pairing of the inimitable Korg MS-20 and field recordings staged or captured by Jiyoung in Seoul and Busan, South Korea.

With three scenes per side, Jiyoung walks us through different geographical and spatial intimacies. Public spaces and intimate conversations are obscured and reconstructed. Glass elevators, an unknown hotel lobby piano recital, office toilet rants, windowside night bus travels, and multiple languages interplay with staged and unstaged conversations to transmogrify themselves into a world of Jiyoung’s view. Money, sex, relationships, and cultural parameters are at once idiosyncratic as well as disorientingly familiar to the listener.

As an extension of the series coined by Jiyoung as 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘍𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, the album feels crisp, pressurized, and at times funny, at other times melancholic. As language, space, and viewing perspective shift, Jiyoung’s succinct album invites the listener to an aural world uniquely of her own viewpoint. While collecting source material relying on the outside world (conversations, elders, the closing track featuring Sungeun Lee), we have a listening experience that deeply illustrates Jiyoung’s perspective. The disjointed experience of someone maneuvering internationally to further develop a practice is encapsulated brilliantly here by Jiyoung with 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕 𝑨𝒍𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒊𝒆𝒔. Alongside Makoto Oshiro’s 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒅, it is a perfect bookend to the ENXPL series.

Jiyoung Wi is a writer and musician based in Seoul and The Hague. She writes fiction in-between institutional and non-institutional contexts, and works with sounds in-between clubs and art museums. Her methodology involves building and breaking sonic narratives by arranging and re-contextualizing disparate sound sources ranging from field recordings to fragmented anonymous dialogue.

She approaches sound and text as invisible experiences and phenomena, and is interested in the narrative symptoms that emerge when both are juxtaposed on the same axis. In a series entitled 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘍𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, she explores these symptoms operating within and without the art space. She has been co-organizing an experimental/leftfield listening event 𝘚𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘊𝘭𝘶𝘣 𝘚𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘭 since 2019.

Vilnius-based record label Electric Shapes line up ‘All Is One Remixes‘ from label co-founder and producer Dovydas Platakis, better known as Jokios Kultūros...Today, we are pleased to premiere Tassilo Vanhöfen’s version of ‘Split‘ thanks to its ultra-occult soundtrack blending acid-infused mysticism and synth-driven downtempo. As the track opens with sub-filtered arpeggios and cryptic invocations, followed by a synth-heavy chorus and spiraling hi-hats, it brings the listeners into a state of inexorable delirium for nearly 6-minutes.

The self-released track “icu” by AXT was produced and mixed in Prague and Vienna from May to August 2024, under the influence of overwhelming emotions brought on by a blend of loneliness, contemplation of unexpected life paths changes, and falling into the abyss of distance and separation from something and someone I felt deeply connected to. “icu” features voice samples from “Chanel” by Frank Ocean. Big up Frank, but I believe there are more sides than just two!

The artwork was created by Ukrainian-Czech visual artist @dreamlogue_ in Prague, during his ongoing exploration of the possibilities within randomness and chaos.

It was meant to happen, wasn’t it?

FR : Avec « Sortir la tête d’une pierre », Victor Taranne (aka Tarez) livre un premier album solo s’inscrivant dans le continuum de l’ambient, du dub et du downtempo. A l'intérieur : des mélodies naïvo-poétiques, des basses infraterrestres, des textures étranges et rapiécées ainsi que des enregistrements glanés entre l’Auvergne, la Charente-Maritime, la Seine-Saint-Denis et l’Amazonie. L’écoute est évasive et moléculaire : celle d’un monde se faisant et se défaisant dans un même mouvement. 

Traversé par le doute et l’inachèvement, « Sortir la tête d’une pierre » est aussi un hommage à un être vivant qui aurait passé la moitié de sa vie recroquevillé à l’intérieur d’une pierre. Celui-ci, stimulé par une lueur grandissante, aurait alors décidé de sortir de son trou et d’explorer le monde environnant, trébuchant ça et là sur quelques racines et se remémorant, avec nostalgie, le minéral qui l’a accueilli.

Les morceaux (à l’exception de « Interlude » et « Kouba ») ont été composés par Tarez entre février et avril 2024 en Auvergne et à Aubervilliers. Ils ont été initialement conçus pour un projet audiovisuel live, Polifera, formé avec Lucie Damase, dont la première représentation s’est tenue au Hardcoeur Festival en juillet 2024.

EN : With “Sortir la tête d'une pierre”, Victor Taranne (aka Tarez) delivers his first solo album in the continuum of ambient, dub and downtempo music. Inside it : naïvo-poetic melodies, infraterrestrial bass, strange, patched textures and recordings gleaned from Auvergne, Charente-Maritime, Seine-Saint-Denis and Amazonia. The listening is evasive and molecular: that of a world making and unmaking itself in the same movement.

Filled with doubt and incompleteness, “Sortir la tête d'une pierre” is also a tribute to a living being who spent half his life curled up inside a stone. Stimulated by a growing glow, he decides to emerge from his hole and explore the surrounding world, stumbling here and there over a few roots and wistfully recalling the mineral that welcomed him.

The tracks (with the exception of “Interlude” and “Kouba”) were composed by Tarez between February and April 2024, around Auvergne and Aubervilliers. They were originally conceived for a live audiovisual project called Polifera formed with Lucie Damase, first performed at the Hardcoeur Festival in July 2024.
