The Hobby Corner Sessions

Finally, we're hitting the road: MZE aka IIx enlarges the BTS-family! Just recently, he dragged us into his world with his “Still EP”, which was slightly more experimental and primarily with no beats, nonetheless, atmospheric with proper depth.
 
Now, with his new “Chi EP” he brings back the beats. Deep, dark, rough, gnarly, halftime, dodgy and funk-driven he works through his 4 track EP, which is only the beginning of further records.With releases on Alphacut an Drumpanic MZE aka IIx is definitely no stranger. Also, because several years ago, he ensured some terrific bass nights as one of the few DnB-live acts at the legendary Breakbeat Journey parties at the Distillery. However, for quite some time it has become very silent about him.
 
 Now, we are extremely happy about this enrichment and excited to share MZE / IIx’s musical output with you!

MZE/IIx - Chi EP (BTS008)

[kju:bi] already bowled us over with their exciting debut “Prospects” in May this year. That’s why we are amazed to present the projects latest work. With “Cross Culture” they bring up four new tracks that refine their sound further and appear to be a piece of heart.
The opener "Basement Tune" immediately sets the direction by going underground with a minimalistic drum construction that disregards the snare and fully concentrates on the bass drum. Pushing bass waves and deep atmospheres deliver this rapturous basement sound while gaining some drive. “2nd Street” smoothly continues with energetic and impelling drums and a delightful sound arrangement.
Beyond that “Cross Culture” carries on the deep vibes with half-time drums that allow a little breather, while keeping heads bobbing to the beat. Finally, “The Construct” brings it all together: deep dragging and rather minimal beat constructions, wobbly bass styles and a profound underground atmosphere that make “Cross Culture” a timeless DNB experience.
No doubt about it, [kju:bi] were one reason that made us continue our work and already became a treasured part of the BTS family. So keep your eyes and ears open for some more future coproductions.

Kjubi - Cross Culture EP (BTS007)

With a gasp Metasound & Lucius14 realized that it's been a year now since their last EP came out. Hence the pleasure to release new tracks on their BREAK THE SURFACE imprint is now the greater.

Looking for inspiration, both of them reclaimed the warm and organic sound of earlier days. Never before their affection towards Funk, Jazz and Soul Music was as notable as on the new "Campfire Funk Pt. 1" EP. In particular, experimenting with the acoustic guitar led to an even more musical direction.

"Lingual Education" can be located somewhere between House, Funk and Jazz.
"All I Want", backed by the soulful vocals of singer Casey Keth, keeps that feeling up.
The guitar as mentioned above gets its big appearance on "What's that all 'bout!?".
"Echoes of a long lost Future" comes along rather dreamy, proving again how well the acoustic guitar aligns electronic soundscapes.

So don't burn your fingers at the campfire, right? May the Funk be with you!

It has begun...

"Break The Surface" is now presenting itself as a label and releases music in digital format.

March 4th we are going to release Drumatic's "Sleeveless EP" (BTS001)

The young producer from Chemnitz nearly represents a Calibre of Eastern Germany for us and we are pleased and proud to publish four top-notch tunes produced by him as our first release.

The vibe he creates by using jazz-samples is fantastic and shows how beautiful Drum&Bass music still can sound, without appearing clichéd.

His tunes sound fully developed and are produced to the point. They are paired with excellent arranged and extremely grooving beats. International well-known Artists like Kabuki, Syncopix or Henree already play his tracks for a long time in their sets.

We are very honoured that we can release such marvellous and above all comprehensive tunes on our label.

Drumatic - For the Faith

After having released tunes that are on a very high level for a digital-only release, such as Drumatic's "Sleeveless EP" and Paul SG's "Lost in Halftime" & "Landslide", BTS003 comes up with two remarkable tunes, too.

"Avani" produced by CarlMatthes from Caracas (Venezuela) and Tyler Straub from San Mateo (California) is a Drum&Bass track that is characterized by its autonomy. So the beat shuttles between halftime and laidback but does not commit to one of them. A felicitous and impulsive groove is evolved in combination with Latin percussions. In addition, Indian influences and Asian vocals provide a deep aspect. When the bassline starts after the drop, the tune confidently threads a path between deepness and energetic rhythm.

The track already received DJ-support from London Elektricity, Fabio, DJ Flight and others. 

The second tune is another musical contribution by BREAK THE SURFACE artist Paul SG. He provided a quite deep and slightly dreamy piece with "Slippers". However, the funky bassline functions as a good counterpart to the moody atmosphere and therefore the tune is not only intented for listening use but also meant to be played in the clubs.

Break the Surface proudly present our new Release "Lies keep it alive" by Wintermute & MC Amon Bay. On this EP, the two artists reveal creative synergies and dynamic outcomes. In terms of style, this record stands out by its deep, energetic and dry sound without losing funk.
 
On our latest EP, Wintermute already gave an impressive preview of his fingerprints by contributing to [kju:bi]’s "Prospects". His understanding of bass-driven music provides an abstract atmosphere influenced by various music styles of which, most notably, experimental electronic sounds from Scandinavia create his kind of deprivation of reality in an extremely pleasant way. His earlier work can be found in releases, remixes and features on C4C, Katakis, Bad Taste, Trust in Music and Digitalgewitter.
In Eastern Germany, when it comes to DNB, you might have come across the striking voice of MC Amon Bay. The long experienced Master of Ceremonies provides a deeper soul dose with his vivid vocal sound. However, those expecting standard phrases, will definitively be disappointed by Amon Bay’s profound and elaborate lines.
 
The release title "Lies keep it alive" refers to the social pressure that contradicts the devotion of our existence, whereas the track "Bring it to mind" takes us on a journey into the core of our soul. "Distracting Knowledge" talks about attaining knowledge without considering one’s own problems, while "Compared Affair" is a youthful self-reflection of a lyric ego that meets capitalism and loses track within it.
 
As a plus, the EP contains contributions, remixes and features by Cues, Bastard und Dreadmaul. We are excited to present you the result of their collaboration!

MZE alias IIx takes us on a space ride: Cosmonaut suit on, headphones up and off into the Space Shuttle! Departing with "Far Beyond", MZE maneuvers the shuttle upwards. No snare is needed to whip the shit, because the beats and the astrosound push tremendously.
Listening to the playful and adventurous beats of „Balls“, you might already believe to meet the first Mars-dwellers. Not even a single trivial drumset is used, instead the flight sucks you into a technoid warp-hole. 
With „Take Hold“ we approach the landing. Here, nice half-time beats accompanied with whippy breaks and a pushing bassline prevent from loosing grip. „Frog King“ - a track originally by Rofigu - was sent through the space wolf by MZE to complete this intergalactic EP - Happy tripping!

Indeed, Break The Surface is keeping things a little low at the moment. That is, production-wise. It's no secret that there are loads of funny activities out there that you can also spend some time on. Hanging out with the family, doing some day job and so on. Fortunately, there are other ways of expressing oneself through music than releasing BTS EPs. So in the meantime, here comes the second installment of the Break The Surface Podcast, recorded by Martin Hayes.

Martin Hayes is a member of Rose Records. We really track down every single release of theirs and appreciate how things are evolving at the Rose Records camp. Last year, Martin contributed a beautiful remix to the "Devoted EP" by Metasound + Lucius14 – and now it's up to him again: nearly one hour of NuDisco-Funk straight from the decks to your device.
