We're thrilled to welcome back tune aficionado and beatsmith J-Slyde with another brilliant mix... this time it's a live recording from his set on Chill Island @ Esoteric 2023...

Here's what he had to say about the set...

"I find chill sets the most un-chill set to plan for. I always begin with lofty aspirations, amassing a huge bucket of music that travels through BPM, genre and style, with the idea that it will all somehow come together on game day.

As I began work on piecing together this set, I was reminded that they never just "come together".

But that's a big part of why they end up being so special.

Then being offered a platform as beautiful as Esoteric's Chill Island to play such a set, further helping to make things that much sweeter.

It also played part of a 4-hour breathe. showcase, with Simon on beforehand. Big thanks to him for trusting me with such an honour!

The mix is loosely split into 3 chapters which cover lo-fi house, trip-hop, hip-hop, electronica, progressive breaks, lots of weird beats & breaks, some garage, a cheeky slathering of dnb and an amen break for good measure. All as cohesively as I could mix them together.

"Things don't always go to plan. This set was originally planned to be performed at Interstellar Groove Festival 2024, but sadly, life got in the way and I had to cancel on the gig at the last minute. Having spent so much time amassing the music, piecing the set together and rehearsing it, I felt the pull to finalise things and close out the chapter. So after some time to breathe, I sat down and recorded it in one live take, as was planned for the stage at IGF.

breathe.028 Simon Murphy - Throwback - Mahala Mix 2014

Mahala was a Melbourne institution running from 2013 to 2018. The mix series created a platform for artists to push boundaries and use their music to tell a story beyond club dance floors. Mahala's much-loved and incredibly popular events showcased incredible local talent alongside some of the world's best. 

For this edition of breathe. we are throwing back to Simon Murphy's contribution to the Mahala mix series that was released in 2014 and hasn't been online since 2019. After a few requests, Murphy dug up the recording to be re-shared with the world.

The mix stitches together ambient, downtempo beats and electronica, with vocal samples spliced into a hypnotising haze of sounds.

Murphy reflects:

"The invite to be a part of the Mahala series really came at a turning point in my musical journey. I had been playing clubs and festivals for years, whilst in my down time listening to as much electronica, downtempo and ambient music as I could get my hands on. I was finding incredible artists and played mixes like Zabiela's Master Series on repeat. Mahala gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in a creation of my own and in many ways, laid the foundation for breathe. So huge thanks to Mahala as breathe. may not exist if this mix wasn't given a place to exist!"

Thank you, Justin, for bringing vinyl to The Bus on playa. A first we won’t forget.

“Monday morning after the Temple Burn, just before the sunrise.. I walked up to the bus with my record bag as Aline Brooklyn and David Triana were wrapping up their opening set for the night. I was excited to play during the last party of the week, followed by the historic mayhem of the Wolf & Lamb crew. Somehow it felt fitting for different worlds to meet this way around the turntables in our closing party of the 2025 Burn. 

The suspension hissed as we let all the air out and the bus settled onto the axles. An attempt to stabilize the twenty two new subwoofers we’d been designing for the past three years, now installed, doing their best to create one of the more challenging situations for turntable isolation ever. 

The team helped to slide the table into place we’d prepared and I grabbed the first record and put it on the platter, floating precariously on three layers of isolation tables and air pillows… threatening to jump the groove at any moment. I was grateful to find the flow quickly and felt so held and safe in this special container created by our crew that morning.

Slowly they invited curious dancers to join us on the top deck.. 1 more… 5 more.. 10 more.. until it felt alive in the booth again, but with the collective presence and dedication to the music quite palpable. 

The rest was a beautiful blur and an hour and forty five minutes later, I came up for air as my last track played. Table removed, Gadi began his set on the CDJs and it was almost as if it hadn’t even happened. 

If you were there, then you know. If not, I hope you enjoy this recording of the first, and hopefully not the last, vinyl set ever played on the Robot Heart Bus.

This is my set from Rainbow 2026 at 2:30pm on a sunny Sunday at the Homestead Stage. Wasn't the biggest crowd but it was the biggest vibe. Big ups and much love to everyone who came for a dance and stayed till the end. 

I was gonna just fall in line and play whatever everyone else was playing. But I thought if I was a punter on the third day, what would get my batteries charged again? So this is what I came up with. 90 mins of fun. No tricks, no gimmicks and I definitely wasn't there to 'educate' or show off. I hope you all felt the same.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (flight numbers MH370 and, via codeshare with China Southern Airlines, CZ748) was an international scheduled flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. On March 8, 2014, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 disappeared from air traffic control monitoring at Kuala Lumpur Airport and suddenly changed course. No official cause for the disappearance of MH370 has yet been announced. The findings from radar and satellite data suggest – at least for the flight phase detected by radar and the subsequent turn to the south, deduced from satellite data – deliberate action by a pilot or hijacker. Since the main wreckage has not yet been found, Flight MH370 remains missing.
