"BUDDY" DJ88 remix

The first volume in my new "IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW" CLASSIC HIPHOP MIXTAPE SERIES.  We're comin' out the gate with 1988! 

I am a Cali "Valley" girl and in 1988 I was a junior in high school.  The only way to hear hip hop was turning that AM radio dial to 1580 KDAY.  Big shout out to Julio G & the guys at KDAY for all they did for hip hop in LA in the 80's.  

After I fell in love with hip hop I would buy records & cassettes wherever I could. I came to find that I was really an east coast girl at heart.  I love my city, but I have just always been drawn to east coast production and cadence, it just hits different for me.  I spent a lot of time in New York from 90 to the early 2000's it will always hold a special place in my heart. 

There's an argument between whether 88' or 89' is the best year.  In my humble opinion, 88' is the most important year, 89' is the best year (in regards to the beginning of hip hop we're not talking about the 90's yet.  1988 is when visionaries arrived and different coasts and regions demanded a seat at the table.  1989 was the year when the rulers were challenged and delivered CLASSICS and the freshmen and sophomores came no holds barred.  I can't wait to start putting together 1989.

This volume dedicated to 1988 (given my DJ name I just had to lol), it's filled with all of my favorite songs & artists from 1988.  

This is series is my love letter to HIP HOP.  

I am so grateful for finding a home within this culture and community.  This series is for all the hip hop OGs out there & a proper history lesson for those somehow intrigued with the Futures & Lil' Ashtrays of the hip hop world.  When authenticity gets abused and manufactured you end of with one dimensional confusion that can become very dark in energy.  Everything has to go through its natural cycle, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I will be dedicating a volume to each year, but of course I had to start out with "88' U suckkasssss" #IYKYK

IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW | VOL 1

I love this song. The original, written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey, was released in 1975. I was four years old. 

As a teenager, I used to hear this song and felt connected to it in a strange way. Lyrically it was one of the first songs that I "heard" that made me "see" the song visually. The tone, feel, and energy of the production, is kinetic. 

As a DJ, I've played it hundreds of times, and I've always dreamnt of flipping it in the way I "saw" it as a teenager. This remix is an homage. It's my interpretation of the lyrics. Dark and mysterious, sexy and slowed down just enough to be haunting, but still funky. The bass line in this song can light up the night sky. 

My dreams came true on a recent summer night in the Valley in a friends studio, I've never had a project flow so smoothly. I had very talented friends; Connor Bond (additional drums & engineering), Jona & Adrian Cohen (of latin Indie band, The Citie) for additional bass & slide guitar, and the beautiful voice of Jenny Katz who did additional vocal arrangements for me. 

Like my previous remixes, I flipped this with hip hop architecture while keeping the integrity of the original. The drums are an homage to a hip hop producer The Alchemist, who's sound I've always loved. I sampled the drums from one of his songs, "It's A Craze" feat. Mobb Deep. 

All the stars were aligned. It was definitely one of those nights where everything falls beautifully into place. Where you KNOW something special is happening.

For anyone who isn't familiar with the original, run, don't walk and listen to it immediately. It's A CLASSIC. 

This flip is for music lovers. It's also for the DJs who cast a wide genre net, play cool dive bars, artistic events, elevated lounges with sex appeal, or spots that call for cinematic soundtracks.

FOR ALL MY BASSHEADS!! I'M SO EXCITED TO DROP THIS!!!

It's been way too long since I drove in this lane, this mix was long overdue.  Nasty & delicious BASS heavy electro/house mix as an homage to my second city of Las Vegas.  This track list is very special to me theres's a bunch of bangers that I used to play weekly on the strip and downtown and I wanted to fuse them together with recent favorites and new finds. This mixtape is the invite for my "THATS WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR"pop-up party that I throw when ever it calls to me energetically.  It happens when it happens.  Its a mood.  I have guest DJs  and celebrate birthdays.  It's a special night. It's a party celebrating friends, music lovers, and the lost art of the dance floor.  I throw it with one of my best friends and when we get together to host this beautiful funky night, it's nothing but laughter and love!  This one we're celebrating our birthdays and I wanted to do a mixtape to give people the vibe and be able to boogie with us in spirit from wherever you are in the world!  This is a little taste of what goes on from doors opening and the first drink to last call. The first 20 minutes is an opening set by my friend MIGHTY REL and the rest is by yours truly.  Had a lotta fun putting this together & I LOVE this party.
