HEARD IT ALL BEFORE

To be an artist in a loud, media-driven world, you have to know how to be strong. And there’s no clearer image of strength than watching your mother fight wildly against cancer every day for twelve years.

 “My mom was diagnosed with cancer when I was ten, and she’s still fighting to this day,” Bree said. “They told her she was going to die about ten times. Nine months ago, they gave here two weeks to live, and she’s still here.”
It was Bree’s mother who instilled in her a love of music at an early age. “She made us sleep to classical music, clean to Gospel music, and watch anything Patti LaBelle that came on TV.” 

Now, Bree is one of Minnesota’s freshest up-and-coming artists, singing a unique hybrid of all these styles. “I can sing a lot of everything, but I’m writing more R&B Pop now,” she said. “It’s all very unique to my voice. People say I don’t sound like anyone they’ve ever heard.”

Bree has been singing for as long as she can remember. She was caught on camera at age two, making up her first song. By the time she was five, she was singing on stage with her sister in a Gospel duo that admirers referred to as “The Singin’ Sisters.”
She continued to sing with her sister until she was sixteen. In addition to that, Bree was part of a group of female singers called Loyal between the ages of 12 and 14. The members of this group would go on to succeed in amazing ways in the musical industry. (One of the members was urban pop singer, Auburn Williams.). In spite of their young age, word of their talent spread, and they sang at a variety of venues, including the Twin Cities’ B2K concert.
When the group disbanded in 2004, Bree took the opportunity to move toward a solo career. She continued her involvement in a variety of choirs, most recently Triad for Christ – a traveling Gospel group. She also began singing background vocals and appeared with singers such as Jamecia and Paris Bennet and Timopha Linae. Every year, she performs at the annual Michael Jackson show at popular Minneapolis bar, The Kabooze.
Bree met agent Ravonne Walker on a recent trip to Texas. She had gone to see her mother, who had moved there after being given two weeks to live and who has lived there ever since.
Ravonne, a distant cousin, knew Bree exclusively through her singing at family funeral. She challenged Bree to move forward with her music, to do it for herself, to emulate the strength of her mother and walk boldly into an uncertain future. “After that I started going to McNally-Smith College of Music,” Bree said. “And I just started really getting serious about making music.”

Bree’s upcoming self-titled album is composed of her original songs and her unique voice. She sees this work as the only valid response to the musical gift she has been given. “I know that this can be taken away at any time, and I’m very humble about that,” she said. “I just want to share with the world what has been given to me.”

When she’s not recording, Bree is writing songs, attended music classes, or traveling with her choir. Even her daughter, the beating heart of her daily life, is named for the beauty of music. Her name is Lyric.

“Music heals wounds and soothes the soul,” Bree says. And after watching her mother battle cancer, wounds and healing is something that Bree knows a thing or two about.

 “It’s something you can give to someone that can reach their heart directly. It has so much power to it, and that’s what I love about it.”
