During the Winter of 1993, I spent three months living at the headquarters for the Church Universal and Triumphant. The spiritual leader of the Church was Elizabeth Clare Prophet, and the headquarters is in Corwin Springs, Montana.  

It was because my sister has been a member of this Church for several years that I became interested in finding out more about it and in spending some time there talking with people.  I wanted to understand why they were there and to get a clearer picture of the whole Church in general, of what that community was like and how it involved my sister.

The political and religious philosophy was explored through over 40 hours of recorded stories and conversations with Church members and Officials and recordings of chanting, services and rituals.

The Violet Flame was originally commissioned by New American Radio and Meet the Composer with funds from the Lila Wallace Readers' Digest Fund. This version of the piece was created for NPR's "Soundprint" and was broadcast in January 2002.
