Eyes Wide Shut #2 - Distortodistorto

This piece was created as an introductionary exercise to the musical software Cecilia 5 (by Ajax SoundStudio) as part of a training course in Electroacoustic Composition given by composer Octavio Lopez at the Conservatoire de Nîmes.
Crafted into a 3 minutes songs are three different modules created in the software, using additive synthesis and recordings of bowed guitar.

Dreamstate

DreamState

Second installment of my « Exercices de Conservatoire », this piece focuses on the different types of enveloppes - or attacks that can be used to modify how sonic excerpt can be presented to one’s ears, and can change our idea of what it is we are actually hearing.  It was created around some recordings I made with my co-student Pierre of a desk lamp, using a mallet to obtain some bell-like sounds, a guitar pick to scratch the springs, and a violon bow to generate these wailing sounds, coming from the springs as well.  I would like to extend my thanks to my good friend Léo, who agreed that I use the recording of him playing the mouth harp we did together.  Many thanks as well to my teacher Octavio Lopez for pointing out some changes I could try. It helps me grow as a creator, and I cherish those little pieces of advice.  Brendan Sean Piroué - 26/12/21

Night Stroll

Part 1 one of couple of exercises focusing around a "Concrète" approach to sound. In this piece, only a sequencer was use to generate the sonic objects. I decided to use preexisting songs (from artists Nadia Lena, Ice Thunder, and Angel) to create new sounds and organize them in a sort of A-B-A' form.
This was a challenging exercise to complete, as I found the use of a sequencer limiting, in that it creates short, unremitting loops. Sound spatialization was a way to "get over" this blocker, by placing those small loops in a large space.

Sequenc(h)er

Part 2 of the study around a « Concrète » approach to sound, the exercice focused on the usage of a single musical source, the goal being to stretch one’s creativity as far as possible in a minimalistic context. I decided to work with a plastic bottle as my instrument. To gather a wider variety of sounds, I used both a direct recording from my Zoom H4 as well as a contact microphone connected to the H4. It made for some more « natural » takes, and for some deeper, ocean bed type tones. Crushed, shaken, breathed in, stroked with a key and a pen, the bottle produced some curious and interesting sounds.  The portrayal of functioning machines came to me after all the treatments applied to the recordings. I saw the whole piece as form of mechanical symphony, witnessed by somebody stumbling upon the machines performing their music on their own.

Sleepless Machines

Upon spending a night at the hospital - monitoring my sleep, I decided to bring along my recording equipment. I had a Zoom H4, along with a couple of microphones ; the first one being a contact microphone, use to record vibrations coming from a solid object (the opposite of an acoustic microphone which records air vibrations).
The second was a coil pick-up, that catches the electrical signal coming from utilities, ranging from plugs, neon lights, charger, etc… I proceeded to record every machine present in my room, which included heaters, computers, wi-fi systems, plugs, switches and a particularly loud neon light.  These takes were then processed through the musical software Spears, creating re-synthesized (I’ll let you do your research on this matter…) copies of these takes.  

The resulting audios were then more or less blended with the original takes, creating an hybrid piece of concrete yet electronic music.

Growing Tree

Poursuivant dans le champs des musiques ambiantes,
ce morceau est avant tout une expérience acoustique.
Peu de temps après avoir acheté le logiciel TS 2 
développé par l'Ircam Lab, j'ai souhaité passer au 
microscope musical des morceaux préexistants, des
phrases, des idées, afin de trouver des sons dans les
mélodies. 
C'est une tentative d'extraire des sonorités devenues
invisibles, oubliées de nos oreilles, au profit de 
sons et de notes devenues bien familières. 

Le résultat est une longue complainte, d'un choeur 
fantomatique. Une rêverie à la fois calme et 
tumultueuse. Pareille à l'océan dans la nuit, mais qui
avance, qui progresse dans le noir, non pas en 
rampant mais à la manière d'un spectre. Un songe
pénétrant doucement l'esprit, et le quittant avec 
délicatesse, presque comme s'il n'avait jamais vraiment
existé.
