Second installment of my « Exercices de Conservatoire », this piece focuses on the different types of enveloppes - or attacks that can be used to modify how sonic excerpt can be presented to one’s ears, and can change our idea of what it is we are actually hearing.  It was created around some recordings I made with my co-student Pierre of a desk lamp, using a mallet to obtain some bell-like sounds, a guitar pick to scratch the springs, and a violon bow to generate these wailing sounds, coming from the springs as well.  I would like to extend my thanks to my good friend Léo, who agreed that I use the recording of him playing the mouth harp we did together.  Many thanks as well to my teacher Octavio Lopez for pointing out some changes I could try. Night Stroll

Part 2 of the study around a « Concrète » approach to sound, the exercice focused on the usage of a single musical source, the goal being to stretch one’s creativity as far as possible in a minimalistic context. I decided to work with a plastic bottle as my instrument. To gather a wider variety of sounds, I used both a direct recording from my Zoom H4 as well as a contact microphone connected to the H4. It made for some more « natural » takes, and for some deeper, ocean bed type tones. Crushed, shaken, breathed in, stroked with a key and a pen, the bottle produced some curious and interesting sounds.  The portrayal of functioning machines came to me after all the treatments applied to the recordings. I saw the whole piece as form of mechanical symphony, witnessed by somebody stumbling upon the machines performing their music on their own.

Sleepless Machines

Composer Lea Bertucci's collaborative works and solos for saxophone and bass clarinet are often layered and processed through unusual methods, including archaic tape recorders and multichannel configurations. Fascinated by acoustic phenomenon, Bertucci is as likely to perform in a club as in a cave or handball court. Solo and ensemble works are explored in this program, with comments from the artist on technique, technology, and adventurism. Bertucci’s 2022 album, Murmurations, is on Bandcamp.

In einem längeren Gespräch mit Musikredaktor Omar Fra spricht Stephen O'Malley über die Langlebigkeit und den Erfolg der Band, geht auf ihre Ursprünge und Ziele ein. Er reflektiert seine Rolle als Musikhörer über überhaupt seinen Musikkonsum. Immer wieder dreht es sich um den Begriff des "Engagement" oder eben um den Zugang, den man sich zu Musik verschafft, sei es jetzt O'Malleys neuste Endeckung von einem Festival oder ein hypotethisches Publikumsmitglied, das nachher zum ersten Mal die Band live hören wird - weil sich eben rumspricht: "Sunn O))) live: Das musst du mal erlebt haben!"
