I am proud of the drum imaging in this one.the drums sound great.I was able to mix them perfectly, with a great stereo sound.  I wish I had an overhead map of the room we recorded in. This was a live recording when I had the band play on my radio show on WECS.  I couldn't pay them for the performance with money.  So I told them I would record and mix anything they play on my show.  I think with this quality, it was a fair deal.  I got kind of obsessive with this show, this track in particular.  The band played great.  The sound of the drums drove me crazy.  The drums were all tuned too tight and could not be fixed with EQ or other FX.  So I converted all the drum hits for the toms and snares to midi and replaced them with recordings i clipped from another band I recorded.  Not easy with that drum solo at 2:48 and all of his rolls and dynamics.

This is the Producer's Cut because Peter did not like the sound of the guitar.I guess it sounded too awesome and real.I could not convince him that this is the best sounding acoustic guitar i have ever heard recorded ever.This is the pinnacle of acoustic guitar mic technique.All other acoustic guitar recordings are number 2 or lower.Listen to the track with some nice speakers a few feet back and you can believe there is a guitarist in the room with an expensive acoustic. http://www.myspace.com/petegsolofornow . Another band that performed live on my WECS radio show, and again paid in recordings.These guys usually play with a full rock band but i guess the lack of money prevented all the members from being available.I was treated to an intimate banjo-djembe duet.The djembe was mic'edfrom the top at the skin with a Beta57 and a Beta series kick drum mic on a boom to the horn carefully threaded under Eric's chair.I warned him farting would be digitally captured forever.Henry's banjo was miced with and AT2021 small diaphragm condenser.I have great memories of this show and i have the recordings to prove it.Available for download with Creative Commons license:Always give credit to http://www.roadsidemanor.com/

This Morning (Producer's Reprise) by Chris Croce

This is a fun song by Kellin.Starts out with a silly folk rock type song with breaks for singing like a chicago blues.Then it goes to a reggae/island bridge and ends with a lousiana blues turnaround.Ross, on drums, and Spincycle, on bass, both played awesome.They are 1 take musicians who heard the song only 20 minutes prior to recording.Isolating the mics from each other and convincing everyone to record at barely audible levels was irritating but the results were worth pissing off some friends for an hour.Available for download with a Creative Commons License:Always give credit to Kellin Atherton

One December day, Jordan calls me and say he needs me to record something the next day. It is always hard to get clear details from Jordan since he views the world like an impressionist painter - he can only see the moment and he perceives everything with his emotions.Anyway I was able to figure out he needed me to mic a piano in an auditorium he reserved and another mic for voice.I arrive and I am unsure if we are trespassing or if he really reserved the auditorium.There was a gorgeous old Steinway grand there, slightly out of tune.I mic'ed the piano on full stick with a 90 degree coincidental pair of small diaphragm condensers, panned to hard stereo.Somehow Jordan found a Berklee (or is it Berkley?) trained composer to play piano for him.This pianist was playing the part that Jordan wrote, rather basic, and I asked him if he could play it with some arpeggios and some 7th chords and he did.Then I asked him to play the same phrases in the minor key and he did.Then I asked him to play a take with some sense of climax and he did.I love working with musicians that are on the same wavelength as I am.Jordan sang his part on this take.I felt like it needed a thicker voice track when I was mixing it so I learned all the lyrics and doubled the vocals myself.I was told the documentary won an award, I like to think it was for the score :-).
