Wie wallt er doch so sicher seine Bahn!
Bei allem Plänkeln, Hin- und Widerstreifen
Vergißt er nie: "Ich muß zum Ozean!"

Du, Seele, nur willst in der Irre schweifen?
O tritt, ein Kind, doch zur Natur heran
Und lern' die Weisheit aus den Wassern greifen!

I can often stand by the stream for hours,
When I escape from the people's spell;
He chats here like an experienced man,
Who has looked around in the world.

There he describes to me the travails of his youth,
How he first won the way through cliffs,
And then, exhausted, he was almost lost in the sand,
And I feel every word go to my heart.

How he so surely plods his course!
With all his skirmishing, to and fro
He never forgets: "I must go to the ocean!"

Thou, soul, wilt thou but wander astray?
O approach, a child, but to nature
And learn wisdom from the waters!
