Jacob's Ladder - The Ups and Downs of Life

Yom Kippur is not only a day of forgiveness, but also of restoration. Rebbe Nachman reveals that the “exchange chambers” steal a person’s energy and blessings, leaving behind guilt, sadness, and sin. The Sukkah - Protection from the Chamber of Exchanges

Rebbe Nachman’s passing on the fourth day of Sukkot in 1810 and his burial among the martyrs in Uman embody his mission of soul rectification and Kiddush Hashem. His resting place serves as a channel for drawing holiness from the “Chamber of Exchanges,” where spiritual energy can be diverted or trapped. Through this concept, Rebbe Nachman revealed how sadness, emptiness, and assimilation result from holiness being exchanged with impurity, and how joy, halachic devotion, and guidance from true tzaddikim restore balance. His burial, facilitated by Hirsch Ber Horowitz, symbolized reclaiming holiness even from secular realms. The Sukkah’s symbolism of leaving permanence for divine connection in the outside domains parallels Rebbe Nachman’s mission to extract holiness from impurity and repair the spiritual damage originating from Moshe’s acceptance of the Erev Rav. His teachings link the work of Moshe, Aharon, Yosef, and David to the process of gathering lost sparks, achieved through the four Breslov devotions—study of Shulchan Aruch, mikveh, midnight prayer, and hitbodedut—and the nine fundamental Breslov books that form the spiritual rope of extraction leading to ultimate redemption.

Rebbe Nachman - The Master of Extraction

In Parshat Bereishit, Adam and Chava are driven from the Garden of Eden, and Hashem places the Lahat HaCherev HaMit’hapechet—the revolving sword—to guard the way to the Tree of Life. This sword symbolizes the Chamber of Exchanges, where truth and falsehood are constantly swapped. The greatest test of life is not open rebellion, but being deceived by distortion—seeing darkness as light and falsehood as truth. The only way to pass through this sword is through emunah and simcha. When we face confusion with faith and joy, rather than intellectual struggle, we cut through illusion and draw close to the Tree of Life. Through Torah, clarity, and happiness, we overcome the world’s deception and rediscover Hashem’s light hidden within creation.

The rainbow, Hashem’s covenant with Noach, represents the shofar blasts of Rosh Hashanah—the tekiah, shevarim, teruah—which draw mercy into the world and remind us of the tzaddikim whose joy and holiness uphold creation. Just as the generation of the flood drowned in exchanges, we too must guard against the sadness that leads us to look beyond our portion. Through simcha and gratitude, the light of the rainbow becomes our protection, restoring clarity and reconnecting us to Hashem’s kindness.

In Parshat Vayeira, Avraham Avinu pleads with Hashem to spare Sodom, using the strange phrase ho’alti ledaber—“I have begun” or “I want to speak.” This word ho’alti hints to ratzon, the deep will and yearning that connects us to Hashem even when logic fails. Avraham’s usage of this term in his dialogue unfolds through the numbers 45, and 20—each revealing a secret about the Keter, the Divine crown of will, and the Nine Chambers formed through spiritual setback and renewal. Through these mysteries, Avraham teaches that even when the world collapses around us, the power of ratzon and joy can draw Hashem’s light back into our lives. Sodom was destroyed only when its last holy spark was gone—but as long as we’re alive, there is still a spark to redeem, a reason to hope, and a call to rise again in joy and emunah.

Even though second-choice options like the daughters of Aner, Eshkol, and Mamre were righteous, they originated from the Chamber of Exchanges and lacked the purity of lineage needed to anchor the entire nation. The miracle of Rivka’s birth ensured continuity rooted in holiness, allowing all future generations—even those who fall far—to find their way back. Because our very DNA traces to this foundation, every Jew holds an eternal spark that can never be lost.

The wellsprings Yitzhak opened symbolize the revelation of Torah in places where it had been blocked, illustrating how tzaddikim bring divine light into constricted areas with perfect harmony between expansion and limitation. Growth depends on following their guidance with simple faith even when it feels counterintuitive, trusting that the path of Torah is inherently pleasant, uplifting, and capable of generating joy through belief alone.

Parshat Toldot - Re-Digging the Wells

Class given in Colombia at the Associacion Breslev Retreat in Medellin. The class was given in translation to Spanish.

A series of teachings on converts, spiritual resilience, and the role of tzaddikim. The Talmudic account of the convert who approached Shammai and Hillel framed the idea that Torah rests on accepting life’s fluctuations and uplifting others, with the convert’s journey illustrating a soul returning to its roots despite spiritual ups and downs. The experiences of tzaddikim were described as a constant cycle of ascent and descent that generates the strength to rise again and awaken other souls, modeled through images like trampolines. How visiting the graves of tzaddikim creates a channel of compassion that can assist a person beyond what they merit, allowing the tzaddik to descend, connect, and help in prayer; personal testimonies highlighted the profound spiritual benefits that can emerge from such visits, including life changes and breakthroughs connected to these holy sites.

Teachings from Rebbe Nachman emphasized practical methods to awaken simcha, including dancing, recalling past goodness, thanking Hashem, and connecting to future redemption during prayer, while the example of Reb Noson showed how focusing on spiritual growth rather than despair allows problems to resolve.

Don't Give Up

In Parshat Miketz, Yosef HaTzaddik emerges as the master of dreams, revealing how holiness can be extracted from confusion, exile, and darkness. Yosef’s additional two years in prison were not only a consequence of misplaced reliance, but a preparation to master the world of shinui—change—enabling him to interpret Pharaoh’s doubled dreams and guide an entire empire through famine. Reb Noson teaches that dreams reflect the Chamber of Exchanges, where truth and falsehood are mixed, and only a true tzaddik can sift out clarity. Breslov Schmooze - How to Learn Rebbe Nachman

In Parshat Vayigash, the Torah’s counting of the seventy souls who descended to Egypt reveals a profound mystery centered on Yocheved, the future mother of Moshe Rabbeinu. Conceived in the Holy Land yet born between the walls of Egypt, Yocheved embodies the spiritual state of being “in and out,” a condition essential for redemption. Drawing on the Maharal, the Be’er Mayim Chaim, and Rebbe Nachman’s teachings, the class explains how exile itself is an expression of the Chamber of Exchanges, where holiness is displaced and must be extracted. Moshe’s power to redeem Israel flows directly from his mother’s unique formation, enabling him to access the Keter, the Infinite Light, and draw it into the world. This pattern is not only historical but personal: every Jew who experiences confusion, displacement, or struggle may be living a Yocheved-type mission, sent into difficulty in order to reclaim hidden holiness. Parshat Vayigash thus teaches that redemption begins at the boundary, and that descent itself can be the doorway to the highest light.

Parshat VaYigash - The Walls of Yocheved

Yehudah’s blessing in Parshat Vayechi reveals that true kingship and redemption come through humility, truth, and the courage to enter broken places. Yaakov reassures Yehudah that he is not like his brothers who acted with haste, because Yehudah admitted the truth in the incident of Tamar and prevented innocent bloodshed, even at the cost of deep personal shame. Drawing on Rashi and Reb Noson, the shiur explains that Mashiach must emerge from an “upside-down” lineage rooted in the Chamber of Exchanges—through Yehudah and Tamar, and through Ruth of Moav—so that he can reach lost souls trapped in confusion and distortion. This teaches that when life feels swapped and broken, attachment to tzaddikim and commitment to emet give us the power to extract holiness and move toward redemption.
