This piece was composed using Logic Pro in the fall of 2014.  It is intended to be interpreted in two movements: the first movement is called conspiracy and the second is parade.  The piece uses acoustic instrument samples and digital processing.

'only through fractures may light shine' explores the gritty sounds of the double bass through the use of string multiphonics, overpressure, and bowing behind the bridge and tail piece. The electronics in the piece augment the bass’s capabilities further by emphasizing the inharmonic, crunchy, and wispy sounds that are not idiomatic of the bass.  Together, both parts of 'only through fractures' create an experience where sounds are put into new contexts in order to find beauty in what may normally be considered noise.  'only through fractures' was started at the Atlantic Center of the Arts in New Smyrna Beach Florida and I thank the Atlantic Center for the wonderful residency.

soul, turn orange-colored is broken up in to five distinct sections that are to be played attacca. The title for this piece comes from Federico Garcia Lorca’s poem Ditty of First Desire. The piece is structured around the different verses in poem and the verses are included in the score as the title of each section.

Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3, written in 1976, combines quasi-sacred minimalism with modal melodies drawn from centuries old Polish chants and folk songs scored for solo soprano and string orchestra. Symphony of Sorrowful Songs achieved international acclaim after Dawn Upshaw and the London Sinfonietta’s 1991 recording under the baton of David Zinman, with over 2 million copies of the record sold to date. Arranged for tuba and electronics and performed using MAX/MSP, this arrangement aims to represent the monumental work by Górecki by giving the performer the opportunity to recreate a massive 200+ bar cannon, have their acoustic sound digitally distorted and glitched, and play the role of a soprano soloist in front of a massive string orchestra…all in the same 20 minutes.
