My One and Only Love

This piece was written for Amilcar Perez-Lopez and his mother. Amilcar was 20-year Warrior, who came to San Francisco, via the treacherous journey from Guatemala, to support his family. He had been living here for a year, working in construction and supporting his family until he was brutally murdered by two police officers dressed in plain clothes in February 2015. I thought about the phone call made to his mother, his family. I thought about the build up that led to the decision that Amilcar would have to leave. I thought about the worry, fear, and pain that they both experienced as he embarked on that journey, and they probably disclosed it because they didn't want each other to worry. I thought about the sacred love between a mother and son. This is what fueled this poem. Rest in power, Amilcar, and prayers to your mother and family.
