this came from the first drum take recorded in my new downsized studio. kids needed larger rooms and my partner, Monika Jean, moved in, so sacrifices had to be made. most of the drums are gone. what you hear on this track are odds and ends i could squeeze into a corner. floor tom as a kick, broken hi hat that wont open, etc etc. surprisingly i tend to enjoy frankenstein drum sets more than full ones. the whole "making something out of nothing" spirit tends to inspire me most.

This one is about the times we're in and trying to find ways to handle them without getting sucked under. I mean, things are bad enough without people writing depressing songs about how bad things are... I heard some good advice about finding a place for the despair and not letting it consume you, so that's in here. As well as working together, music, and thinking about what comes after this - it might be good, right? Hopefully we'll still have arpeggiators 🤞

Idris is a genetically modified human, engineered to navigate spaceships through "sub-space" - allowing ships to traverse enormous distances. As such, he's a tremendously valuable asset and vulnerable to kidnapping. There are other costs: the process of navigation means being aware of the presence of terrifying entities that seem to wallow in sub-space... Another track inspired by Adrian Tchaikovsky's "Shards of Earth" novel.

The dusky sounding guitar is my Gibson 335 - I love the warm but crisp bite of those humbuckers!

Idris

revenge is a primitive vile trait that is also unfortunately prevalent and powerful.It causes senselessbrutal violence, that in the end solves no problems and creates a recurring cycle of more violence. The notion to avenge ones ancestors I suppose has to do with a sense of guilt if you "do nothing" but I think you can forgive for the sake of creating a peaceful future for your children without forgetting the qualities of the ancestors or acknowledging their worth.

I’ve been livin’ through the shadows of these hospital lights,

Years of wisdom in his eyes, but the body don’t hear—
Old frame slowin’ down while the mind stays clear.
They wired him to machines, tubes runnin’ like tracks,
Nurses sayin’, “Mr. Gray, we’re watchin’ your stats.”
He ain’t drivin’ no more, but he’s steering his fate,
Talkin' to himself like, “Boy, don’t you dare break.”
Every night felt long, full of struggle and strain,
But he whispered to the pain like he’d tame that flame.
Family at his bedside, holdin’ on through the fright—
He said, “It ain’t my time yet… keep the hallway light.”
 

Weeks turned months but the man stayed tough,
Life hit hard but he said, “I’ve had worse stuff.”
Heart skipped beats like a vinyl with a scratch,
Still he kept every moment in a tight dispatch.
He laughed with the nurses, joked with the staff,
Told stories from his youth just to cut time in half.
He’s a fighter by nature, stubborn by blood,
Walked through storms in his life, never drowned in the flood.
Now he’s breathin’ a bit clearer, strength comin’ back,
Like the train of his spirit found its way on track.
He tells the doc, “I just wanna see my own sunrise,
Feel the air in my lungs, see the truth in my eyes.”
 
Don Gray ain’t gone, he’s just walkin’ through fire.
Age got claws, but he’s fueled by desire.
If life is a test, he’s acin’ the score—
If death knocks twice, he ain’t answerin’ the door.
