Blossoms: A Soundscape

Intended for Professor Eusebio's ARTS 1 S class, Blossoms: A Soundscape is an original composition meant to not only capture the overall vibe of UPLB's Nihon Koen, but to also tell a story about a young man and how he dealt with his 'internal conflicts'.

Blossoms: A Soundscape by Brian Ponce was conceptualized and was transcribed by the composer on the 23rd of October 2018. It is an original composition that meant to put into music a story the composer wrote following a visit to the Nihon Koen. The composition meant to immortalize the tale of a young man who happened to pass by the Nihon Koen and left the place as another person; moreover, it is through this that the ambience and the overall vibe the garden exudes were given a musical narrative.

The score is divided into four sections in which the composer sought to establish four distinct narratives; from bar 1 until bar 11 of the score wherein following the discovery of the Nihon Koen, a sense of awe prevailed within the young man; from bar 12 until bar 22 of the score wherein a sense of curiosity became the dominant sensation the young man felt; from bar 23 until bar 35 wherein the young man grew ever curious and became more driven to discover the source of unease he was slowly developing; from bar 36 until bar 56 wherein the need to know where the tingling sensation was coming from started to consume the ever curious young man, slowly building up until the internal conflict subsides as depicted on bars 57 and 58. The young man eventually figured out what caused this—he realized that he felt joy and deep satisfaction in the garden. He realized how much he misses his family and how he may not see them for the next couple of months because of the start of classes. He realized that being an exchange student meant that he had to be away from the family that made him feel safe and at peace. He then contacted his family via Skype and said “My beloved family, I can’t do this. I’m coming home.”
