A piano version of a lovely and haunting piece. I think it's meant to be music you might hear in an RPG, perhaps when characters are entering some haunted woods. But feel free to imagine your own meaning or circumstance for this piece. If you're so inclined, let it drop you deeper into the recesses of your mind so you can engage with the mystery that lies within.

At some point I plan to make a fully orchestrated version of this. And maybe even come up with a title.

Untitled mysterious piece (Piano version)

An epic nine-and-a-half minute psychedelic electronic dance piece. Inspired by Shpongle ( @shponglemusic ), among other artists that have been prominent in my life.

I recommend listening to this as loud as you can get away with and tolerate, so that the music envelopes you.

That one ever-present moment of true clarity

A friend lent me a Yamaha reface CP and I've been having fun improvising meditative pieces on it using its delay effects.

This is a silly piece written in the style of background music from Final Fantasy 6. (Or Final Fantasy 3 for people in the US who played it on the Super Nintendo back in the 90s.) It's using the actual instruments from the game, and could be performed using the Super Nintendo's sound chip.

What is it for? It could be the theme music for a gang of scoundrels or thieves who antagonize the protagonists at the beginning of the game, but end up reluctantly teaming up by the end to help fight the final boss. Maybe it's the theme music for a sleazy casino or bar where unsavory things happen. Or perhaps it's for a whole noir-style city where the player has to mix with its seedy underbelly in order to solve a murder mystery.

The truth, though, is that it was inspired by the basement in the apartment I was living in back in 2012. My landlady was, to put it politely, bad at her job, and the basement was mildewy, dark, dank, and generally unpleasant to be in. Every time I went in there to do my laundry, this theme music would start playing through my head, complete with Final Fantasy 6 orchestration.

The Grody Basement (FF6 style)

This track is a quick non-looping edit of the game's background music.

Being that it's a classic mac game made in HyperCard, that means that if I wanted to add music to it, it needed to be something an old System 7 mac could play. So I made a MOD file! I made this with PlayerPRO 4.5.1, the very same copy I used to make all of the music for my old games back when I was a kid, including Unicycle.  (I actually still have the exact files sitting around 25 years later, if you can believe it!) It's been lovingly rendered using Winamp, since it's great at playing MOD files. So this recording is actually higher fidelity than what you'll hear when playing the game.

Galaxitaar: Defender of the Universe!

A track I wrote back in 2009 in the style of music from any of the NES Mega Man games. I tried to make it as authentic as possible, so that it could actually be performed by an original Nintendo.

In case you're wondering about the name... I originally meant this track to be part of a two piece set where the first track was called "My own personal forest temple" and the second track was this one, "and matching robot lair". The first one was going to be in the style of any of those pieces that played in the various forest temple / magical forest areas from the 90's Final Fantasy games. But I never finished it.

8-bit Music Theory did a video analyzing the music of Mega Man 2 (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JknOdnEtwxs ) where they break down all of its common qualities. My track "and matching robot lair" matched in some ways, and not in others, so I went ahead and made a new version that's much more closely aligned with the music from Mega Man 2. So the tempo is now 180 BPM, the bass line matches the bass lines in the game's 180 BPM tracks, and I changed the percussion a bit to work better with the slower tempo. Which one do you prefer?

(Personally I like my original version better. Besides, I was really aiming for more of a "Mega Man 3" vibe when I made the track in the first place. 😜)

from place to place, time to time

A lovely little piece I wrote in the span of an afternoon for the 2019 Global Game jam.

The concept was to write background music for a game where you're wandering through the desert of the post-post-apocalypse and searching for new friends. In the game the music is dynamic in that it starts with just a few tracks looping, and then each time you find a new friend a new part of the music joins in.

It's been a while since I managed to compose a whole piece of music in a single day, and I was really happy with the result. Everyone on the team liked it too!

I did tinker with this for a few hours after the game jam to improve to mix and give the piece some more structure. Also the piece originally didn't have a title. (Update June 2020) Originally I settled on "The Wandering Song" because that's pretty much what it is, but then decided to change the name to "A Song for the Wanderers" because that's a lot more pleasantly poetically, isn't it?

A Song for the Wanderers

I originally started writing this around 2009, got it to about ninety percent finished, dropped it for eleven years, and then finally decided to finish that last ten percent. I think this is another one of mine where the production is very @ulrich-schnauss influenced.

The snow is on the ground and the stars are in the sky

This is another one I started around 2008 and 2009 and just got around to finishing. It's a good companion piece to "The snow is on the ground and the stars are in the sky" (link: https://soundcloud.com/brian-kendall/the-snow-is-on-the-ground-and-the-stars-are-in-the-sky ). I came up with it around the same time, it has a similar chord progression, and there's some overlap with the theme of both songs.

I think this one was inspired by those short @boardsofcanada tracks that just explore a single musical idea for a minute or two and then fade out.

Sometime

Here's a weird one, and another one made for the global game jam, this time in 2021. Me and two friends worked on a artsy walking simulator where the content in the world and the overall tone was supposed to be weird, trippy, creepy, and bittersweet. So this music has all of those qualities, and a lot of dissonant harmonies.

This piece has one persistent looping track and six other layers that fade in and out depending on where you are in the environment. And as you play the game, a ominous glowing orb eventually catches you and causes everything to fade to white. I made a mix that gives all the layers a musical progression similar to what you might hear in the game, ending with the same effects and unsettling humming that you hear when the orb reaches you.
