I blame Chimpus (if you know, you know). This track is a direct result of the horrendous abuse of solfeggio at https://omniglot.com/language/phrases/solresol.htm intersecting with my  ongoing development of software for composing music in Just Intonation.

This version is an official "embrace the suck" release. In particular, it's about 7 seconds too long, because I never got some of the resynthesis working the way I want. If there's enough interest I might come back to it.

But as I said, this is Not My Fault :)

This piece is a collaboration with Matt Cronin and was composed for a final in one of our classes.

The Sense of Escape (A Collaboration with Matt Cronin)

Written in 2011, this piece was composed out of sounds from the (Percy) Grainger Museum in Melbourne, Australia. Percy Grainger, an Australian composer who died 50 years ago, was known more to the public as a traditional composer and pianist arranger, but he was also interested in ever evolving sounds. By using a Piers Lane recording of Grainger's piano arrangement of "The Man I Love", this piece explores the question of "if he was still alive today, what would he compose"?

five images (2020) is a set of compact canonic miniatures. Double, crab, prolation, and inversion canons are employed across the work to create a large-scale arch form that engages the quartet in a variety of different ways. While the canons are rigorous in their execution, they are not all intended to be heard as such, with variance in the timbre, register, and temporality of the material affecting the perceptibility and autonomy of the canonic voices. The odd-numbered movements (i, iii, v) use the full ensemble, with iii acting as the axis and breaking point in the large-scale structure. Movements ii and iv, both crab canons, employ duos different than those used in the double canons of the outer movements, and occupy a noisier and more distant landscape. Each pair of movement across this axis (v with i, and iv with ii) are created as derivations from their counterparts, as if an image is reflected through a broken mirror to create a simulacrum of its pair. However, it is impossible to determine which way the axis imposes its changes, and thus which image is the original and which is the reflection.
This work was created as a canonic sketchbook for my large ensemble work, Triskelion, for DePaul University’s Ensemble 20+, and directly confronts the issues presented by working both with miniature forms and composing with canons in the hopes of using an old technique to make something new.

N.B. The very last chord is to be played "as long and accurate as possible", with multiple asynchronous reattacks in the brass and strings (in this version, there is a simple fade out due to the limitations of physical modelling etc.)

PER (2018-20)

Trained in a mishmash of classical, popular, and avant-garde styles. In early 2020, it seems that my destiny is to write show tunes about chimps, and/or for chimps, and/or expressing the perspective of chimps.
