Taxonomy is a kind of killing things. So how go about formalizing something as amorphous as the music of @c-a-a-r-l | You could practice apophatic musicology. This isn’t jump-up, because it goes beyond puckish hyperreality. This isn’t deconstructed club, it being so entirely stripped of referentiality. Rattle off sub-genres as impossibilities. And perhaps it is only drum & bass by the exceptionality it embodies. Of a category’s weightlessness when every technique and decision overbounds its associable formulae and expectations.

The only way I’ve come to understand CÅARL‘s music is in indefinite times. There is a mythic time to the music of this producer racking up releases on Barcelona’s @genome-records-1 | Of a music that does not seem to describe humanity, that in its combination of contorted, choral voices, palatial orchestration and infernal low-end appears to visualize each a mountainous past and the afterlives of apocalypse. So there is herein an eschatological time and a geological one. A music of tectonics and cataclysm. There is the time too conjured by CÅARL‘s aesthetic of petroleum and mud. The musical equivalent of banked sunlight and generative mires. Synonyms to the history of extreme and experimental electronics and a generic footprint. Thus a music best understood in terms of divergence, of the annihilation of stasis and priority in the making of something we have not yet a vocabulary to articulate.

With a bagful of IDs from CÅARL‘s own upcoming torrent of releases & those of their circle, this mercurial producer links up with Realist Alive.
