Ideas

This particular song is pretty special to me. I lived in NYC for two years and while there, Bobby and I re-found each other after a decade apart. We had lotsa fun, but the most was late at night writing and making music. Neither of us are amazing writers, musicians or producers, but that was never the point. The point was to collect tunes and get better along the way....which we did!

I left NYC on June 25, 2013, and this was our last session before I moved. This is a song that Bob had written and been playing for a few weeks. We got together and started in on it. We wrote a bridge on the spot and spent a few hours putting some tracks down. It is instrumental, which frees up the title to be whatever we want. Bob suggested "Outta Dodge," which fits the sound and the scenario.

2009 - Messing around before dinner and came up with this groove.....hence the title. It was on Woolsey St. in Berkeley. I like the organ solo.

2009 - A man and his synth. Wild Bill, Beck and probably someone else were hanging at the Woolsey house in Berkeley. They kept stepping out and I would add something to this mixmash until they stepped back in. Nothing fancy, just late night synthing it.

So here's the story:

- 2010? - Went to Cazadero, CA with a crew. While there, Beck, Jasmine, BriLan and Abs (the Laniels) and I wrote down some lyrics. They were to a different chord progression, but essentially the same as these. In my mind we were making a road song made up of a buncha different cliches.

- 1/12 - Those lyrics have lived on top of a few different chord progressions...trying to find a home. But then in January, Blake Ingram and I met up in Vermont and were jamming some kinda bluegrassy chords, and the next morning I pulled out these lyrics to see if they worked on this progression that Blake and I were playing. We recorded the little idea on my phone.

- 2/12 - I got back to NYC and recorded the rhythm guitar and wanted to build the song around it. Of course it was going to be some country-ish rock thing, and I got the guitar and drums down like that. When the bass and organ came around next, I had some dub bass and reggae organ thing going...so I went with it. It ended up as a hybrid.

- 5/12 - This week I added background vocals and sent it to Gary, who added echo reggae guitar. Rad. I formed a solo section (guitar, organ, piano, everybody) at the end today...and here she is.

Of course this is just a demo....It would be way better with a real group of people......and the canned drums annoy me. But alas.
