Initially written in 2021, finished in mid 2025, this song was originally about the promise of being able to be together in the future. I was telling my girlfriend to imagine I was there with her already at a time when that was impossible, and I would be. 

Go To Sleep

"New Mexico Rain" was written by Michael Hearne, "Night Rider's Lament" was by Michael Burton. I used to hear Doug Marquis play "New Mexico Rain" most nights at the closing campfire when I worked at Philmont, but a few nights he would play "Night Rider's Lament" instead. I played the music on his days off, but I had trouble learning the words to "NRL", and had trouble learning the guitar for "NMR". Several months later, I figured out a facsimile of the guitar, based off of what I could remember from Doug explaining the intro to me. Both songs were done by the Tobasco Donkeys, one on each album, so I was able to listen to those, and the songs are forever linked in my mind as the serious songs at closing. I thought, why chose between them?

New Mexico Rain/Night Rider's Lament

Spooky blues in the vein of Otis Rush, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Danny Kirwan. About the moment when your mind is racing after arriving at a friend's house to find its front door hanging open.

The Door Ajar

Written to feel like a Dylan or Baez type protest song. Black Lives Matter.

Island of the Free

Written in May 2018 after reading a friend's post regarding a news story.  The creative mood took hold, and I actually ended up being late to a show I was attending to get it written while I had the momentum.

Nothing More To Say

After listening to a Carol Fran recording that really caught my attention, my mind caught a hold of one phrase in particular, and it took on a different melody. The song immediately took form, and was written in 30-40 minutes. This recording is actually faster than the song should be, but by the time I noticed, I didn't want to go back and re-do everything, so I guess it will just be like this until I record it for real.

Bit Too Much

Written after John Prine passed away, I had been playing along with one of his songs, and as I set the guitar down, the melody for this song popped into my head, and I picked it back up. I had this written about 30 minutes later.

All I Know

A swamp pop/rock instrumental take on the Kakariko village theme, a la "Sleep Walk" by Santo and Johnny. Written by Koji Kondo, but the bridge is an original composition.
