Monk, Bunk, And Vice Versa is the first track from arranger/bandleader Mark Masters' new recording Blue Skylight.  On the CD, he reimagines the music of iconic jazz composers Charles Mingus and Gerry Mulligan.

The album features the Mark Masters Ensemble with veteran players Putter Smith, Gary Foster and Gene Cipriano, among others.

"Convection" is the first track from the Satoko Fujii Quartet's new album "Live at Jazz Room Cortez," available October 20, 2017 via Cortez Sound.

The quartet features pianist Fujii, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura, drummer Takashi Itani, and violinist Keisuke Ohta. Something told Fujii to use violinist Ohta instead of a bassist and she went with her gut feeling. The result is an album with a unique group sound and vision that brings fresh insight into her compositions.

Convection - Satoko Fujii Quartet

Propensity is the first track from guitarist/composer Rez Abbasi's strikingly original album "Unfiltered Universe" out November 10 via Whirlwind Recordings.

The album features Abbasi's South Asian-inspired supergroup Invocation with saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, pianist Vijay Iyer, bassist Johannes Weidenmueller, and drummer Dan Weiss, as well as guest cellist Elizabeth Mikhael.

It's the third album in a trilogy exploring different South Asian musics.  Where Invocation's 2008 debut Things To Come highlighted the influences of North Indian Hindustani music with guest vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia, and their 2011 follow-up Suno Suno, the Qawwali music of Abbasi's native Pakistan, Unfiltered Universe takes as its point of departure the Carnatic music of South India.

The name Christophe Salin may not ring a bell. For the last few years, Christophe has slipped largely under the radar. But that is about to change. After launching ‘Salin Records’ with his wife Daria Salin, the German producer has been hard at work curating a series of releases establishing the Salin-sound and paving the way for future Salin Records artists. The forthcoming ‘Will You Be There EP’ is the final instalment of the three-EP series that pays homage to the emotional side of house music. 

Sitting on the A1, our premiere ‘To Love’, offers a fitting nod to the city of love itself, offering a charming foray into the French touch soundscape. The track’s percussive, jazz infused opening has a warming innocence to it: reminiscent of an old-fashioned Romantic film or a busker bringing life to a park on a winter evening. Salin’s production is a skilful exercise in the art of simplicity. In the first breakdown, a melancholy saxophone washes over a soft piano, before being joined by some heartening drums and a hazy vocal. The same four elements are used throughout the track, but with a certain thoughtfulness and delicacy that ensures they never overstay their welcome.  It seems as though each element of the track is in conversation with the others, working together to evoke memories and emotions that remind us what it is ‘to love’.  

The emotive, jazz-infused atmosphere is sustained across the whole EP. It’s rare to find a 6-tracker that is best digested in one sitting, but listening to the ‘Will You Be There EP’ from start to finish is a rewarding, cathartic journey. This is an EP that is more fitting for the AUX on a solo late night drive than the club. It may not have been intended as so, but this is driveway music at its best: tunes that you continue to listen to well after parking your car, extending those few precious moments of solitude.

PREMIERE: Christophe Salin - To Love

"Ze Teach" is a track from the insistently inventive composer, arrange, bandleader and educator Ayn Inserto's album "Down A Rabbit Hole,"  out September 21, 2018 via Summit Records.  The track is dedicated to her mentor Bob Brookmeyer, who signed off on notes to Inserto as "Ze Teach."

The album features The Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra with special guests - trumpet star Sean Jones, tenor sax great George Garzone, and trombonist John Fedchock - along with her exceptional cast of players many of whom have been with her since she launched the group in 2001.

It's the group's first new album in a decade and reintroduces Inserto's sly and imaginative musical world, a realm populated by some of jazz's most expressive improvisers. Inserto has built a brilliant career around her gift for designing fantastical but slyly logical musical landscapes and crafting sonic adventures marked by sinuously surprising melodies, Technicolor harmonies, and arrestingly vivid voicings.

Part I: Ze Teach - Ayn Inserto

"Congruently" is the first track from Devin Gray's new album "Dirigo Rataplan II," out September 21, 2018 via Rataplan Records.

On the album, the drummer-composer reconvenes his band of master musicians featured on "Dirigo Rataplan," his debut as a leader: saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, bassist Michael Formanek, and trumpeter Dave Ballou.
 
"Dirigo Rataplan II" brims with more melody, richly implied harmony and a loose-limbed sense of rhythm as something physical and flowing- as blood, as breath. Fans of jazz from Ornette Coleman and Henry Threadgill to Dave Holland and Craig Taborn will dig this organic mix of composition and improvisation, structure and freedom, atmosphere and dynamism.

The album will be released on CD, vinyl, digitally and for streaming.

"Our Métíer" is the title track from Mark Masters' new album "Our Métíer," out September 21, 2018 on Capri Records.
 
The eight Masters compositions featured on the album showcase some of the most adventurous creative improvising musicians in jazz today: Andrew Cyrille, Mark Turner, Oliver Lake, Tim Hagans, Gary Foster, Dave Woodley, and Putter Smith. In addition, Masters incorporates the unique voice of Anna Mjoll as an orchestral color, mixing with the instrumental waves in wordless swirls of sound.
The ensemble that supports these improvisers includes Scott Englebright and Les Lovitt (trumpet), Stephanie O'Keefe (French horn), Les Benedict and Ryan Dragon (trombone), Jerry Pinter, Kirsten Edkins and Bob Carr (woodwinds), Ed Czach (piano), and Craig Fundyga (vibes). The group's big band sound is augmented by bass clarinet and vibes giving the project, at times, an ethereal personality.

On this album, Masters applies his prodigious talent for painting brilliant, complex, and satisfying jazz landscapes. This is the composer/arranger's eleventh project for Capri Records.

"Path of Totality" is the first track from saxophonist/composer Quinsin Nachoff's album of the same title, out February 8, 2019 via Whirlwind Records.
 
The second release from Nachoff's innovative, genre-eclipsing band Flux - Nachoff, saxophonist David Binney, pianist/composer Matt Mitchell, drummer/percussionist Kenny Wollesen, and drummer Nate Wood - the album melds jazz and classical music with an arsenal of vintage electro-acoustic instruments.
 
Neither Toronto nor New York, the two cities that Quinsin Nachoff calls home, offered prime viewing conditions as the moon eclipsed the sun in August of 2017. But Nachoff, who has long drawn inspiration from the scientific wonders of the universe, couldn't help but be moved by this rare astronomical phenomenon - and to find a degree of solace in it. After all, here was a shadow large enough to blot out the face of the sun, darkening the Earth and then moving on. In the Path of Totality could be found hope that this, too - whatever "this" might be in the moment, whether political, personal or environmental - will indeed pass.

"Fagen" is the first track from Larry Goldings' album "Toy Tunes,"

Featuring Goldings, Peter Bernstein, and Bill Stewart, "Toy Tunes" 
marks the trio's twelfth album since their first release in 1991. It 
is their second recording with Pirouet.

Goldings' relaxed, lyrical "Fagen" was named for Steely Dan's Donald 
Fagen, whose records "introduced me to a whole new world of harmony and song structure."

"Herbs in a Glass" is the first track from Jason Palmer's album "Rhyme and Reason," available March 1, 2019 thanks to the non-profit Giant Step Arts, led by noted photographer and recording engineer Jimmy Katz. 

This double album is the first through Giant Step Arts, a groundbreaking, artist-focused non-profit with a single mission: to help modern jazz innovators create their art free of commercial pressure. 

"Rhyme and Reason," featuring trumpeter Palmer, saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Matt Brewer, and drummer Kendrick Scott, provides vivid evidence of the adventurous and original music that can be created when artists are provided such integral support. Palmer assembled a dream band and composed bold new music that allows each of these gifted players ample space and inspiration to explore.

Nick Walters & The Paradox Ensemble - Dear Old Thing (STW Premiere)

"Blowing Smoke" is the first track from David Berkman's album "Six of One," out April 5, 2019 via Palmetto Records. 

On the album, the pianist/composer explores the rich orchestral colors possible in his three-woodwind sextet, featuring saxophonists Dayna Stephens, Adam Kolker, and Billy Drewes, bassist Chris Lightcap, and drummer Kenneth Salters. Also represented are saxophonist Tim Armacost and percussionist Rogerio Boccato. 

The album is crafted from the musical personalities of its participants, which Berkman has come to know intimately from five years of performing together and, in some cases, decades of collaboration.

Cykada have forged a unique and infectious sound that merges raw grooves, electronics and influences from across the world to create music to dance to with the spontaneity of jazz. The collective’s highly anticipated debut album is set for release on the 22nd March via Astigmatic Records.
 
In the last few years, London has become the spiritual home of the ground breaking new jazz movement. A new burst of energy and attitude brought by young musicians, equally inspired by the likes of John Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders or Sun Ra, as well as Madvillain, J Dilla, Flying Lotus and Floating Points, has brought a welcomed freshness to the London Scene. This exciting new environment brought a group of young musicians together, all with a mutual desire to discover a new form of expression. Together they created Cykada.
 
Cykada is a band of established musicians on the London scene, having played in groups including, Myriad Forest, EZRA Collective, Maisha, Where Pathways Meet, Family Atlantica and Don Kipper. Bassist Jamie Benzies is the spine of the project, along with Tilé Gichigi-Lipere, also a fellow former member of the legendary band Myriad Forest. Along with Drummer Tim Doyle aka Chiminyo, they were the first members of Cykada. “I became more keen on doing something which has a longer vision. Where you get together with people you know you can work with, people you love sharing a space with and you take your time, you make sure you’re enjoying your music and as that comes, everything else comes”, says Jamie. Trumpeter Axel Kaner-Lidstrom, Saxophonist James Mollison and secret weapon, Guitarist Javi Pérez complete the ensemble.
 
Tilé shows a unique and indispensable role within the band, aside from playing keys, he is programming, processing and modifying the sounds of the instruments, a massive factor in creating the distinctive vibe of the band. Cykada’s unique vibe is a testament to its members and the crucial role they each play in the creative process.
 
The collective’s debut album ‘Cykada’ is an energetic bomb of unique style. It engages distant poles, analogue worlds crashing with electronics, eastern influences crossing with western, harmonising nostalgic moments with dancefloor bangers. It seems that Western Africa is just bordering with Eastern Europe, where Turkish music high fives Flamenco and all of this is wrapped up with the fundamentals of the London club scene. There are so many inspirations that it may seem impossible to unite them, however they make it happen, creating layers of devastation, beauty and intrigue.
 
40 minutes of music built as 5 compositions, were recorded in December 2017 in the Total Refreshment Centre, London.

MY FAVORITE THINGS - Show #14 (Hosted by Psycut)

"Some of These Days" is the first track from jazz vocalist Rebekah Victoria's album "Songs of the Decades," out June 21, 2019 through Patois Records.

The album features Victoria and a group of two-dozen musicians including the Grammy-nominated trombonist, composer-arranger and bandleader Wayne Wallace, who acted as Victoria's partner for the album. He co-produced it, wrote all of its arrangements-often incorporating elements of Latin jazz, his specialty-and assembled its superlative cast of 24 musicians, including improvising vocalist Kenny Washington, Wallace's bandmates from his own various projects, and a string quintet that features members of the San Francisco Symphony.

Though most of Victoria's performance repertoire tends to come overwhelmingly from the era of the Great American Songbook, as she was preparing to record her second album, Victoria was inspired to widen her musical perspective in terms of both time periods and popular styles. Songs of the Decades features a panorama of songs from each decade of the twentieth century.
 
If the album is retrospective, though, it is the furthest thing from nostalgic. "I wanted to make these songs different. I wanted them to sound very new and fresh," says Victoria, who is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. "The idea was to make them as much fun to listen to now as they were in their day, when they were big hits. For the people that really know these songs, they'll get a kick out of the differences."
