#217 Is indigenous wisdom the answer to today's problems? Yona Frenchhawk

I really enjoyed this conversation with Saniel Bonder & Linda Groves Bonder.

Together they are beautiful example of a marriage dedicated to spiritual growth & on purpose to serve humanity together. 

Together we explore both cutting edge & ancient wisdom on how to navigate these times.

Saniel Bonder is the author of Healing the Spirit/Matter Split and the founder of the Waking Down® work. He has been a pioneer in the widespread embodiment and mutual, evolutionary exploration of awakened consciousness for over a decade. 

Born in New York to Jewish parents in 1950, growing up mostly in North Carolina, Saniel felt from early on that he “was going to be part of something that would change the course of human history — for the better.” By the time he received a B.A. in Social Relations from Harvard in 1972, a quest for spiritual enlightenment had become the focus of his life. 

During the years of his search he benefited from both Eastern and Western teachings and transmissions — as well as from the training in integrity, tolerance, compassion, and perseverance he received from his parents and secondary school mentors. His quest culminated in December 1992 in the awakening he calls his Second Birth. 

Within days his spontaneous transmission of this condition came alive and began to affect others. A year and a half later he entered the mysterious further intensification of bodily and cosmic enlightenment in love that he refers to as “the White Heat.” 

Since awakening, Saniel has dedicated himself to democratizing this embodied, nirvanic aliveness and exploring with others how to create a sane human culture on its foundation. Saniel calls the total advanced teachings he and Linda personally offer “The White-Hot Yoga of the Heart™,” or, more simply, “The White-Hot Way of Trust.” 

Saniel is also a tantric and a shaman, an eco-entrepreneur, an activist for nuclear disarmament, a golfer, and a flute player. He writes, “The heart of my life since bodily awakening as the conscious Self is being related to the great Mystery in Female form, the Goddess. Of all Her forms, the most precious to me is my beloved wife and partner Linda. I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am to her and for her every day of my life. We feel deeply privileged to serve others and the world together.” 

He is extremely proud of the transitions he and Linda and their Heart-colleagues in the Waking Down community have accomplished. After almost two decades under his direction as the founder, their shared work and community life are now proceeding on a new, cooperatively created footing of democratic empowerment and mutual accountability. 

With Linda, Saniel is the founder of the Human Sun Institute, a founding member of the Integral Institute and a charter member of the Integral Spiritual Center.

#218 The Democratization of Spirituality - Saniel Bonder & Linda Groves-Bonder

It's been such a joy for me to participate in these amazing conversations with exemplary people. This conversation with Jeff Carreira is one of my favorite podcasts to date.
There was a sense, in this extraordinary conversation, that Jeff and I were not just talking about these things together, we were experiencing them together. It's my hope that during this podcast the listener will get an experiential  taste of experiencing them too.

"To put it simply, I support people to live a spiritually inspired life, free from the constraints of fear, worry and self-doubt, and aligned with their own deepest sense of meaning and purpose. 
Life has conditioned all of us to be fearful and self-protective. Some of us eventually feel suffocated by the mental and emotional habits that keep us from living a passionate and spontaneously free life. We long to be liberated from the invisible ties that seem to bind us. We know more is possible and we start searching for a life that matches our true potential.I was quite young when my own spiritual search began. At the age of about seven, I began spending time locked in my father’s car in our driveway trying to stop my mind from thinking. Somehow, I knew that if I could do that, I would discover something wonderful.

But like so many of us, I forgot about my early spiritual aspirations and got swept up in the cultural script of career and relationship. I studied physics, worked as an engineer and got married. Eventually my work as an engineer felt empty, so I earned a graduate degree in education and became a schoolteacher and later a school administrator. By most standards I was pretty successful, and yet I felt empty and existentially unfulfilled.My life took a dramatic turn when I left everything and everyone behind and joined a radical spiritual community. For the next twenty years, I devoted myself entirely to spiritual pursuits. I spent many hours every day meditating, chanting, reading and studying, all in a single pointed pursuit of the ever-elusive goal of enlightenment.

During those years in community, I was blessed with many spiritual breakthrough experiences. I was ripped open by dramatic bursts of kundalini energy shooting up from the base of my spine through the top of my head. I spent days in states of conscious awareness that remained steady through all stages of waking and sleeping. I felt a mystical expansion that didn’t stop until my body was the size of the entire cosmos. And in the middle of it, I remembered that I had been able to freely will myself into this sense of cosmic consciousness as a young child.

In the summer of 2001, during a two-month long retreat, I entered into a shared state of enlightened mind with other participants. 

This dramatic opening inspired me to create spiritual education programs that guided thousands of individuals through their own journey of spiritual evolution. Four years later, in 2005, and once again while on retreat, I heard a call to expand my teaching work. I started traveling and teaching meditation and spiritual philosophy more extensively throughout the world.

Currently, I lead retreats throughout the world and run a teacher training program to develop the teaching capacities of others. I am the founder and lead teacher of The Mystery School for a New Paradigm – a virtual practice and study community that provides guidance and inspiration to a global group of awakening individuals

I was an unpopular science kid growing up. The bigger kids picked on me, and girls barely noticed me. I was fascinated by sex in high school, but instead of having a girlfriend I built model rockets and did science experiments… until I found weed and numbed myself out to the world.

I lost my virginity in 3 seconds of glory when I was 19… and premature ejaculation plagued me until my mid 20s when I finally decided to figure out how to overcome it.

Up until that point in my life I had been fascinated by spirituality AND sex… but was disappointed by every spiritual “path” I explored because none of them acknowledged that sex was a thing.

It’s hard to believe that social media on our smart phones is only about 15 years old!

Considering the fact that humans have been around for several hundred thousand years, this is a very short span of time.

Multiple studies are showing a correlation between increased social media use and increased levels of anxiety, depression, loneliness, suicide, and lack of physical intimacy, especially in young people. 

Yet social media is also how people can connect with like-minded friends, launch their own business, organize their own events, and sometimes even meet their spouse. 

So is social media a good, bad, or neither?

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode with Zulu Flow Zion. It happened close to midnight in order to coordinate with him in Australia and just after an event I held in Asheville which gave it a unique and powerful feel.

‘What is Tantra?’ That’s the name of my new podcast series. “Tantra” is a word most people have heard but few know exactly what it is? The word is used in so many different ways by so many different people that there’s a lot of confusion as to what the word, and the practice, really means.
With this podcast series I set out on an intercontinental journey to discover the answer to one simple, yet complex question: “What is Tantra?” I sat down for conversations with a wide diversity of people. Some are world renowned tantra teachers, some are relatively new on the path. Some are women, some men. Some straight, some gay, some bisexual. They range in age from 20’s to 80’s. They come from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and a wide variety of lifestyles.
My intention was not to come to an oversimplified answer on what is tantra, but to provide you with a tapestry of perspectives so that you can become part of the conversation and deepen in your own self-awareness.

What is Tantra? Podcast Series Ep. 1 Introduction

Sofia Sundari is one of my favorite tantra teachers in the world. She was the first person  I thought of when I thought of who I wanted to sit with for this podcast series. I was delighted when she expressed excitement to do it.

Sofia has been a previous guest on my podcast. I loved her openness, her vulnerability and her depth. Many other people did as well as the episode entitled “Why are we so weird about sex?” is one of the most popular episodes I have ever done.  After leading my 7 day retreat in Italy I flew to her home on the island of Ibiza to meet with her.

After getting lost several times in my rental car trying to find her home on unpaved dirt roads,  I finally found it on top of a mountain surrounded by nothing but open space and lots and lots of silence. If you listen close you will hear and feel that profound silence emanate through out this podcast. The same silence I found on the mountain was the same silence I found inside her and between us.

Upon finally founding her home. she gave me a hug and invited me to enter. 
She poured me some tea and explained to me that the reason she felt I resonated with her teachings was because they are actually rooted in nonduality consciousness. She told me how she spent many days in the past practicing Ramana Maharshi’s meditation practice in which you repeat the question “Who am I?” until you discover the answer which transcends thought.

I hit the record button and we talked for over an hour.
