Tom Glide & S.E.L " Teach Me " ( Soul Slayerz Summer In San Juan Mix )

On Valentine’s Day 1970, David Mancuso hosted his first Loft party in his apartment on 647 Broadway Avenue, at a time when many streets had no public lighting and the artist community could still afford the rent for the many lofts in the area. With the words “Love Saves the Day” and an image of Salvador Dali’s “The Persistence of Memory”, each invitation was a doorway to a safe and neutral space with no clocks to tell you the time, no mirrors to throw your reflection back, and no social classes. 

Inside, the dance floor was a test run for a world with no barriers based on race or sexual orientation. A space where an eclectic audience came together with a simple purpose: to make new friends and enjoy themselves to music. A message of love and community that was a true revelation for people such as Nicky Siano, Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries, François Kevorkian, Danny Krivit or David Morales, and that can still be heard today not only in the New York Loft but also in many Loft-style parties that have spread its spirit to many corners of the world.

“Love is the Message: 50 years of The Loft” is a personal tribute to five decades of freedom, community and a profound love for music. A selection of Loft classics in which, according to David’s beliefs, there is no room for mixing, sound effects, or changes in pitch as a simple matter of respect for the musicians who created these songs. A music selection to be enjoyed in a warm and welcoming space, on a clean and bright sound system, under a mirror ball and lots of balloons.

Thank you to Thomas Fitzpatrick, Eric Escobar, Tim Lawrence, Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, Douglas Sherman, and the entire Loft family for their trust, inspiration, and some of the best musical experiences of my life. And, most of all, thank you to David Mancuso for giving us his love for sound and taking us on a limitless musical journey.
