Just like all of entertainment, the dance music scene in our beautiful city is in dire straights. As of posting, Toronto remains in the longest COVID-19 lockdown in the world, with our nightclubs never really being back in the mix since the pandemic began. It’s sucked the life out of our underground, as we have admittedly not been immune to this. 

Even though we’ve been working on a new music project, it has been consistently delayed as we struggle to find regular work time within our tight quarantined / homeschooling situation.  Sadly, we’ve also lost connection with so many of our core DJs, who are seemingly struggling to find their groove too. Thankfully, as always for the BTB crew, it’s Craig Anderson to the rescue!

Craig’s provided us with this stunning, Roxy Music-inspired “Don’t Stop the Dance” exclusive. It’s the perfect reminder to embrace the incredible healing powers of music. We can never forget the underground sounds that have brought us so much joy in the past and can undoubtedly be our medicine as we (try to) patiently wait for our turn on the dance floor once again.     

Within the mix, Craig remains true to his progressive roots, with beautiful melodies and rolling basslines. Many of the selections feature vocal samples that expertly connect our emotions to the rhythms. And as the compilation reaches its breakbeat crescendo, our muscle memory reminds us to get up and restart the dance that should have never stopped under any circumstance.

The cards were stacked against us. Toronto’s longest-running underground club was celebrating its closing weekend. Guy J was less than a week before… Sasha at Stereo and Halloween the week after… John Digweed at Stereo and Henry Saiz Live at Toika the week after that! It’s been a long time since our market was saturated with so many of our scene’s marquee talent, how could we expect the niche to fit in our little anniversary jam?

Heading into the event, it appeared they wouldn’t. Our advance tickets were a tad low for a Luke Fair party and Cesar Caballero played for a way-too-empty dance floor for way too long. It’s like pulling teeth to fill any room before midnight on the best of nights, but with the odds definitely not on our side, we were a bit worried. The party that’s traditionally the best for us had become a stress.

Then, just before the witching hour, the flood gates opened. The Luke Fair faithful stormed through the door. Cesar’s fans slide-stepped in front of the booth and the energy amped in a matter of minutes. The frustrated folks from around the corner began to filter in and soon after they called their friends to come over and experience what was shaping up to be our most memorable Toika party of the year. And that it was.

There’s a feeling of comfort we all have when Luke Fair’s at the top of the bill. The transition from Cesar to Luke is always seamless. They’ve played together so often Luke knows exactly what to expect and Cesar knows exactly what Luke plans to do next. Their trust certainly creates a fluid night of music.

For us, we always know we’re going to see our best friends on the floor when Luke is in the booth. The vibe is priceless when the room is full and the DJ knows most everybody’s name, and on this night, he tailored his set especially for this crew. Countless edits and special cuts kept the memories flowing from the start (below) to the unwelcomed finish (which we’ll leave for those who know).

The lockdown of 2020-2021 also marked the 60th birthday of pioneering DJ, the DJ’s DJ Danny Tenaglia. A man who continues to leave an indelible footprint in electronic music. DEMI’s own career has been intrinsically connected with Danny over a 20-year friendship that has endured. A friendship that has seen the two play together in London, NYC and Ibiza, a friendship that continues to inspire the other musically with their frequent exchanges of music ideas and sounds. And in recent years, as European tour manager for his European shows. And as a thank you and mark of respect, the call came from Danny to invite DEMI to contribute a 60 min set as part of his 60th birthday virtual celebrations which was streamed globally via Beatport. 

Whilst many over lockdown were frequently streaming from their own homes, DEMI had kept himself very much private during this period until the call came along which he could not turn down and went into a deep dive in presenting an hour of music that pretty much encompasses exactly what has endeared DEMI to a worldwide audience. It’s a 60-minute music odyssey and tribute to the master. Packed with super edits and cuts that have never been shared or published before, enjoy this special tribute mix by DEMI.

As we’ve reached our 12th year online, more than ever, bringthebeats is all about the music. The club scene has passed us by. A walking, talking little time bomb smack dab in the middle of his terrible twos -among too many other responsibilities- have made late nights and event-consumed weekends very difficult to pull off. Because of our busy weeks, our most chilled times with house music have unfortunately been everywhere but the dance floor.

A similar story can be told about our main man Luke Fair. For well over a decade Luke’s insane touring schedule conflicted with his desire to be with his family pursuing other interests. Luke’s so talented and incredibly bright, it’s always been a shame so much of his time and energy was spent in the air. When you’re locked into constant travel, it’s almost impossible to expand your horizons, but Luke’s finally doing just that under a beautiful Malaysian sun.

Even though it seems we’re in the twilight of our underground careers, neither Luke nor bringthebeats will ever loose our thirst for groove. House music is trapped in our soul. We both agree its never sounded cooler and it’ll only get better with the masses involved.

We sometimes wonder what it would be like if we were ten years younger, right in the middle of this surge. On the other hand, we’d never pass up the opportunity to be on the cusp in the early days, when the vibe was fresh and pure. Without a doubt, some of the best times we’ll ever have were spent working the dance floor together, wherever that may have been.

The trick now is to stay active and on the pulse while we recharge the battery and assess where our place in the scene can be. We know Luke will continue to perform in his favourite destinations, and when Toronto is one of them, you know bringthebeats will be on board. From now until the end of the year, we’ll also brainstorm ideas to continue to spread funky house love across the wire, because releases like this are a rush we’re not ready to give up.

After 12 years we still feel butterflies the moment we first press play on a Luke Fair promo. And when it says bringthebeats on the file, our hearts swell and feet tingle. The funky, groovy, soulful and super-sexy sounds of Luke Fair are still what’s going down in our underground; you can always count on that.

For the most part, throughout the past 13 years, our main purpose has been to promote and organize parties. But now, as we introduce our new identity, we’re switching our promotion's focus to what we love most about this scene, the music.

We’re calling this chapter, the bringthebeats underground, and the first Plugged IN exclusive supporting it is a special one. It’s our first branded mix and we can thank our nephew Andrew aka @ev3rsun for putting it together with such style. It’s no easy task to add IDs and voiceovers to an incredible set without ruining the musical experience. Andrew’s pulled it off perfectly.

Thanks to our friends Christyna and Aaron for contributing their voices to this debut episode and to JD at www.reformavw.com for providing the slick visuals. With Andrew on board, the bringthebeats underground truly is a family affair, but it’s always been that way with bringthebeats. “I had to join both parts in order to get it properly re-mastered and used a small crossfade at 55:59 when Part 2 kicks in.  This is the original audio that was broadcasted on Metro Dance 95.1 FM (Argentina).  The dynamics have been expanded and DB tweaked a bit to in order to improve the original audio file.  There are a few glitches from the original broadcast but nothing to worry about.

For me it was an unforgettable night, as it was the first time I heard Luke perform live and he totally blew my mind off!! One of the best clubbing nights I’ve had in my life and one of Luke's best sets ever in my opinion.  All the tracks are mind blowing and there are lots of Luke's own amazing edits and productions.” -- Maxi

Luke Fair - bringthebeats NYE 2016

When you really love something, it’s hard to let it go. We absolutely loved the In Deep Sessions and it was damn hard to see it end in the spring of 2014. For 50 groovy, funky and absolutely fantastic episodes, In Deep We Trust treated us to one of the most consistently great series we’ve ever subscribed to. Every month was a guaranteed download. We listened to those mixes everywhere and all the time.

The end of In Deep Sessions created a huge void in our cue, but we knew Martin Harmony couldn’t have fallen too far out of love with house music. His connection to it was heard loud and clear throughout each session and like we said, it’s hard to let that go. So we called on his seed of passion, because if it still exists, there’s a chance we can get a mix. We planted the seed and crossed our fingers for an In Deep We Trust return.

It worked!! We successfully lured In Deep We Trust out of retirement for an incredibly cool Plugged IN exclusive. Filled with classic and fresh vibes, Martin’s slowed things down and kept the mood light; exactly what the groove doctor ordered for these long winter days that are anything but bright.

Thank the dance music gods he’s back warming our souls, this is Poland’s In Deep We Trust plugged into the bringthebeats underground…

In Deep We Trust plugged into the bringthebeats underground - January 2016

For as long as we’ve known what it takes to be a proper DJ, Luke Fair has been on the top of our list. As soon as we heard his mix for John Digweed’s show in 2001 and realized he was from Toronto, we knew this was a guy we had to support.  Our crew shadowed him all over town, from System Soundbar to the multiple places they held the Solution parties. We were up front and centre every time Luke Fair was in a booth.

It was on the big stage inside the Kool Haus in 2001 when Luke opened for Deep Dish and Saeed + Palash that our interest exploded to another level. We only caught the tail end of his set at that legendary Goldclub event, but it was the first time we were introduced to Luke in person and immediately you could sense his humility. He’s not your average DJ focused on fame.  You could tell popularity was just a distraction from his true passion, music.  And we know that sounds cliché, but those who really know Luke, know he’s one of the guys who made that cliché what it is.

DJing is an insular experience for Luke Fair and that’s why he’s so damn good at it. It’s also why he can’t stop mixing even though he’s moved on from regular touring. Luke has transitioned his talents to the online world, which is sad for his fans across the globe, but great for the crews in his favourite cities.  Toronto has the privilege of being one his primary outlets for a passion that will never quit and we relish every time we can get in the groove it.

Our last party with Luke on New Year’s Eve was incredible and we’re counting the days to this summer’s INTIMATE & ON THE BOAT reunion. If you have any hesitation as to why, you can listen to this month’s Plugged IN exclusive—our first return instalment for the series. Luke Fair plugged into the bringthebeats underground - May 2016

A little rain can’t keep our good times away… It was the third time in four tries it’s rained for an INTIMATE & ON THE BOAT aboard the Tall Ship Kajama and once again the music and bringthebeats vibe overshadowed the overcast skies. It really was never in doubt with Luke Fair and Cesar Caballero spinning under the sails.

The party was absolutely trending toward a sell out, but the weather forecast for August 13th looked menacing for 14-straight days.  At no point did it ever let up, causing our tickets sales to slow to only a fraction of what they usually are in the days leading up to a party.

Of course, it’s disappointing not to have the entire crew on board, but there’s always something special about a rainy day party that people who are afraid of a little water continually miss out on. We find people work harder to have a good time when they’re a little wet and trapped on the lake.  With a “we’re all in this together” attitude, people’s inhibitions are left on shore and everyone dances like nobody’s watching.

Luke Fair definitely felt it.  He said it was his favourite bringthebeats cruise so far and that’s saying a lot since the sun was shining bright for last year’s INTIMATE & ON THE BOAT.  With the sails down the sound’s a lot tighter and the lighting achieves maximum effect, as you can see by the blue haze in the later night pics.  And most of all, that feeling of togetherness is priceless.

It’s comforting to know that whatever the conditions, we can make good times happen.  It’s a total team effort and that’s certainly led by the people we employ in the booth.  We could be in a full-on blizzard and Luke Fair could still warm the floor.  No matter how much time he takes off, he always steps up blows minds.  Make no mistake, he works hard to do what he can do, but the talent is natural and plentiful.

Thanks to everyone who supported our Summer Reunion once again this year.  Your dedication is what keeps us grooving.  That and these incredible tunes, of course.

This is obviously an incredibly meaningful set for the BTB crew. 471 Richmond Street West was essentially the house that Luke Fair built.  He headlined the space 13 times, with many of the sets of an open-to-close variety.  

The all-nighter’s allowed Luke to find his comfortable zone in the early hours, while playing some of the deeeep bombs we don’t often hear in his peak-time sessions.  He knew the room better than anyone and a lot of that familiarity came from being the one who dropped the first track. 

Today, we gift to you the first hour-and-a-half of Luke’s final set at Populus (aka TOiKA & Toika Lounge).  This is how Luke set the tone for what turned out to be an absolutely magical night—an event that was strictly about our friends and this music.

Straight out the studio is a brand new podcast from The Rogue Show featuring two incredibly stubborn DJs, Luke Fair & Add2Basket.  Two dudes who have the guts to always keep it fresh, keep it funky and actually keep it real!

Who do they think they are refusing to “play the hits,” turning their back on commercial appeal like they actually give a damn?! And where the hell are all the dark and soulless tunes?! Don’t these guys know today’s electronic music is all about monotony, not melody?!!

To make things worse they have a couple shifty accomplices by their side. First there’s this Jason Warth ‘Design Guy’… what the f-ck is he thinking making this renegade operation look so slick?! And of course there’s me, barney the big mouth, the guy who united these scoundrels so that I could have even more of the ‘rogue’ stuff to spam your inboxes with… (a sinister, hehe).

It really is a catastrophe. When this podcast takes off clubbers might remember what it’s like to smile when listening to house music. Things like groove and cool dance moves might be in demand once again. We all know relentless-aggressive-fist-pumping should never go… this revolution must be stopped!!

The Rogue Show was a creation we always knew had the potential to become legendary, but we couldn’t be truly sure until we had experienced the new partnership in person and on the dance floor. Yes the promo mixes of the first two episodes of The Rogue Show Podcast seem to provide the blueprint for a perfect back-to-back set, but how could we be certain the duo could maintain a flow with direction when going a couple on and a couple off all night? Many try; few succeed.

Well these guys did… The Rogue Show is for real! What an absolutely incredible night of ALL of house music. Luke Fair & Add2Basket delved deep into the full spectrum of the house genre touching upon each and every emotion associated with the style for a proper underground journey. It’s what we crave and why we still throw parties.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped put this phenomenal night together. Thanks to Footwork for going outside the box and taking a chance on a sound and style that’s not the norm in their space. Big appreciation to the The Rogue Show’s design guy, Jason Warth for providing the coolest, most unique media we’ve ever seen in this scene.

Props to the Fabricated dudes, Matt Coleridge & Steve Mack for putting on a warm up clinic, hopefully we’ll be able to share their mix soon too. Thanks to Jason Kew who was the man in the booth ensuring the sound was just right and recorded to perfection. He also put on a killer light show, something that has been sorely lacking in bringthebeats events for some time.

And a final THANK YOU to all of our friends who helped spread the word and supported us on the dance floor. The vibe in the room was incredible and memorable. It really felt like we were a family again with so many faces from the past, present and hopefully future for those who had their first Luke Fair / Add2Basket experience. It’s a night we’ll never forget and that’s because of all of you.

It’s the unofficial start of summer here in Canada; Victoria Day long weekend. Patios and rooftops are opening and we’ve got the summer grooves to keep the vibe as warm as the weather.

Episodes of The Rogue Show are scheduled for every long weekend this season, culminating with the series finale, Episode 20, to help celebrate bringthebeats’ 10th anniversary in October. We figure by then it’ll be time to start new chapters for both Luke Fair and Add2Basket, so stay TUNED!!

On the solo tip, Luke’s recently returned from another spectacular visit to Argentina.  As always, Pacha was a magical experience (as seen here) and a new club called Lotus in Rosario was also really amazing.  There is No Light is now out on ‘OH! Records,’ with a couple really cool mixes to accent the original.

As we approach the 20th – and final – episode of The Rogue Show we present an installment 100% pure to the concept’s original vision.  Episode 18 is all about deep and emotional house. Selections Luke Fair and Add2Basket struggle to fit into their live sets, but gems that will allow this series to withstand the test of time.

For as sad as it will be to reach the grand finale in October, we’ll always have mixes like Episode 18 that can be played in perpetuity. And just as we anxiously await the next Nolan classic, Rogue Show fans can look forward to what’s next for Luke and Andrew… which thankfully for all of us, is Episodes 19 & 20 first and foremost.

Huge thanks to Paul Watson for the sensational Batman-inspired designs.  Paul constructs most of his work on an iPad; ingenuity we admire so much. The Rogue Show Episode 020 - Luke Fair

There’s not a steadier force in funky house than Luke Fair.  Luke went on a production binge in 2012 and looks to continue the magic as we move into 2013. ‘Gravitron’ with remixes from Silver City, The Babel Orchestra and Phunktastike is newly released on Spirit Soul and his ‘Re-ups’ EP is due out on Brown Eyed Boyz on January 21st.

Luke’s most exciting project on the production side is the launch of his new imprint Nonlocal in February.  They’ll be going old school with 300 vinyls of the first release, Victor Berghmeister’s “Rosamango” EP.  Stay locked into the label’s Facebook page for more details.

After indulging the bringthebeats / Groove Garden crew on New Year’s Eve and then again at The BPM festival, Luke will head to Argentina for gigs in February and then back to Europe for a jam alongside Faciendo front man Desyn Masiello in Budapest.
