@lukefair’s signature sound, impeccable skill and humble approach to the DJ profession capture the essence of what bringthebeats strives to represent. Luke’s the ideal “all about the music” guy, continually focused on the product and not necessarily concerned with the reaction. Don’t get us wrong, Luke’s always out to please, but he knows that’ll only happen if the work’s put in.

We met Luke in the early 2000’s at one of his Solution parties. We instantly bonded over our presence on underground messageboards—and of course our mutual obsession with house music. At the time, Tribe was Toronto’s online electronic music authority.   The community naturally separated the party people from the music people and there was absolutely no doubt where we fit.

No bells or whistles required. All we need is great music and good energy and the experience will be everything we dream of. Ever since we met, Luke’s provided the proper beats and we’ve done our best to sort the vibe. As a result, we’ve hosted almost 20 events and countless after parties with Luke in the featured position. In Toronto, Luke Fair and bringthebeats go hand in hand.  We can not tell you enough how much we cherish that.

Luke Fair DJ sets

Not many artists can say that they have done official mix compilations for the likes of Yoshitoshi, Bedrock and Balance... Luke Fair please stand up. Luke Fair is a name that's been on the scene for over 10 years now plying his trade all over the world, and he first came to our attention with the massive 2002 Kritical/Let U Know 12" on Black Recordings (Let U Know was famously featured on the Satoshi Tomiie Nubreed compilation). Luke went on to establish himself as one of the world's premier selectors to call upon for warming up dancefloors, and he was even asked to be the official warm-up DJ for Sasha on his North American Involver tour. Since then Luke has become an headliner in his own right, playing a deep, almost Balaeric-sounding variant of house that will get the most rigid of bodies grooving. Back in 2007 Luke Fair delivered one of the more housier outings with his Balance 011 effort, and he continues that exploration of house in the second of our Balance Selections series.

Luke Fair is the most interesting man in our underground. He’s a man of few words, but many talents, a perfectionist and a procrastinator, an inspiration and sometimes a frustration because he’s just so damn good.

All things said, he’s the most important artist in our movement and a great friend. We wouldn’t write posts, host music, lose fantasy-sports pools or throw parties if it weren’t for Luke Fair.

On the surface Luke’s an introverted musician; a dime a dozen. But if you dig deeper, you find a very complex and insanely-smart individual. His focus is narrow, but incredibly precise. Whatever he does, he does to the fullest, but truly can’t be bothered with the excess.

If being a superstar DJ/producer was only about talent and skill, Luke would be a sure bet for a Grammy. Unfortunately, awards in music are about most everything else, so he’ll simply remain the most popular act in our niche. There’s no one more satisfied with that than Luke Fair.

We met at the Kool Haus in 2001, as Luke stepped out of the cabana booth after opening for Deep Dish.  To this day it stands as one of the most memorable parties we’ve ever been on the dance floor for. A short time later we after partied for the first time, following one of his Solution nights.  The rest is history.

From System Soundbar to Club 1000, the WMC to Pacha, Buenos Aires, Aria and Stereo to Toika Lounge; when we’ve had the time of our lives, Luke Fair is usually conducting the vibe.  We’re so excited to continue this tradition as we celebrate 11-years of bringing the beats…

Luke Fair - bringthebeats - October 2013

The cards were stacked against us. Toronto’s longest-running underground club was celebrating its closing weekend. Guy J was less than a week before… Sasha at Stereo and Halloween the week after… John Digweed at Stereo and Henry Saiz Live at Toika the week after that! It’s been a long time since our market was saturated with so many of our scene’s marquee talent, how could we expect the niche to fit in our little anniversary jam?

Heading into the event, it appeared they wouldn’t. Our advance tickets were a tad low for a Luke Fair party and Cesar Caballero played for a way-too-empty dance floor for way too long. It’s like pulling teeth to fill any room before midnight on the best of nights, but with the odds definitely not on our side, we were a bit worried. The party that’s traditionally the best for us had become a stress.

Then, just before the witching hour, the flood gates opened. The Luke Fair faithful stormed through the door. Cesar’s fans slide-stepped in front of the booth and the energy amped in a matter of minutes. The frustrated folks from around the corner began to filter in and soon after they called their friends to come over and experience what was shaping up to be our most memorable Toika party of the year. And that it was.

There’s a feeling of comfort we all have when Luke Fair’s at the top of the bill. The transition from Cesar to Luke is always seamless. They’ve played together so often Luke knows exactly what to expect and Cesar knows exactly what Luke plans to do next. Their trust certainly creates a fluid night of music.

For us, we always know we’re going to see our best friends on the floor when Luke is in the booth. The vibe is priceless when the room is full and the DJ knows most everybody’s name, and on this night, he tailored his set especially for this crew. Countless edits and special cuts kept the memories flowing from the start (below) to the unwelcomed finish (which we’ll leave for those who know).

As we’ve reached our 12th year online, more than ever, bringthebeats is all about the music. The club scene has passed us by. A walking, talking little time bomb smack dab in the middle of his terrible twos -among too many other responsibilities- have made late nights and event-consumed weekends very difficult to pull off. Because of our busy weeks, our most chilled times with house music have unfortunately been everywhere but the dance floor.

A similar story can be told about our main man Luke Fair. For well over a decade Luke’s insane touring schedule conflicted with his desire to be with his family pursuing other interests. Luke’s so talented and incredibly bright, it’s always been a shame so much of his time and energy was spent in the air. When you’re locked into constant travel, it’s almost impossible to expand your horizons, but Luke’s finally doing just that under a beautiful Malaysian sun.

Even though it seems we’re in the twilight of our underground careers, neither Luke nor bringthebeats will ever loose our thirst for groove. House music is trapped in our soul. We both agree its never sounded cooler and it’ll only get better with the masses involved.

We sometimes wonder what it would be like if we were ten years younger, right in the middle of this surge. On the other hand, we’d never pass up the opportunity to be on the cusp in the early days, when the vibe was fresh and pure. Without a doubt, some of the best times we’ll ever have were spent working the dance floor together, wherever that may have been.

The trick now is to stay active and on the pulse while we recharge the battery and assess where our place in the scene can be. We know Luke will continue to perform in his favourite destinations, and when Toronto is one of them, you know bringthebeats will be on board. From now until the end of the year, we’ll also brainstorm ideas to continue to spread funky house love across the wire, because releases like this are a rush we’re not ready to give up.

After 12 years we still feel butterflies the moment we first press play on a Luke Fair promo. And when it says bringthebeats on the file, our hearts swell and feet tingle. The funky, groovy, soulful and super-sexy sounds of Luke Fair are still what’s going down in our underground; you can always count on that.

In 2002 we made our love affair with house music official online when we launched www.bringthebeats.com. For the most part, throughout the past 13 years, our main purpose has been to promote and organize parties. But now, as we introduce our new identity, we’re switching our promotion's focus to what we love most about this scene, the music.

We’re calling this chapter, the bringthebeats underground, and the first Plugged IN exclusive supporting it is a special one. It’s our first branded mix and we can thank our nephew Andrew aka @ev3rsun for putting it together with such style. It’s no easy task to add IDs and voiceovers to an incredible set without ruining the musical experience. Andrew’s pulled it off perfectly.

Thanks to our friends Christyna and Aaron for contributing their voices to this debut episode and to JD at www.reformavw.com for providing the slick visuals. With Andrew on board, the bringthebeats underground truly is a family affair, but it’s always been that way with bringthebeats. We look forward to having our entire crew contribute to the branding of future episodes.

Luke Fair - bringthebeats NYE 2016

For as long as we’ve known what it takes to be a proper DJ, Luke Fair has been on the top of our list. As soon as we heard his mix for John Digweed’s show in 2001 and realized he was from Toronto, we knew this was a guy we had to support.  Our crew shadowed him all over town, from System Soundbar to the multiple places they held the Solution parties. We were up front and centre every time Luke Fair was in a booth.

It was on the big stage inside the Kool Haus in 2001 when Luke opened for Deep Dish and Saeed + Palash that our interest exploded to another level. We only caught the tail end of his set at that legendary Goldclub event, but it was the first time we were introduced to Luke in person and immediately you could sense his humility. He’s not your average DJ focused on fame.  You could tell popularity was just a distraction from his true passion, music.  And we know that sounds cliché, but those who really know Luke, know he’s one of the guys who made that cliché what it is.

DJing is an insular experience for Luke Fair and that’s why he’s so damn good at it. It’s also why he can’t stop mixing even though he’s moved on from regular touring. Luke has transitioned his talents to the online world, which is sad for his fans across the globe, but great for the crews in his favourite cities.  Toronto has the privilege of being one his primary outlets for a passion that will never quit and we relish every time we can get in the groove it.

Our last party with Luke on New Year’s Eve was incredible and we’re counting the days to this summer’s INTIMATE & ON THE BOAT reunion. Luke Fair plugged into the bringthebeats underground - May 2016

A little rain can’t keep our good times away… It was the third time in four tries it’s rained for an INTIMATE & ON THE BOAT aboard the Tall Ship Kajama and once again the music and bringthebeats vibe overshadowed the overcast skies. It really was never in doubt with Luke Fair and Cesar Caballero spinning under the sails.

The party was absolutely trending toward a sell out, but the weather forecast for August 13th looked menacing for 14-straight days.  At no point did it ever let up, causing our tickets sales to slow to only a fraction of what they usually are in the days leading up to a party.

Of course, it’s disappointing not to have the entire crew on board, but there’s always something special about a rainy day party that people who are afraid of a little water continually miss out on. We find people work harder to have a good time when they’re a little wet and trapped on the lake.  With a “we’re all in this together” attitude, people’s inhibitions are left on shore and everyone dances like nobody’s watching.

Luke Fair definitely felt it.  He said it was his favourite bringthebeats cruise so far and that’s saying a lot since the sun was shining bright for last year’s INTIMATE & ON THE BOAT.  With the sails down the sound’s a lot tighter and the lighting achieves maximum effect, as you can see by the blue haze in the later night pics.  And most of all, that feeling of togetherness is priceless.

It’s comforting to know that whatever the conditions, we can make good times happen.  It’s a total team effort and that’s certainly led by the people we employ in the booth.  We could be in a full-on blizzard and Luke Fair could still warm the floor.  No matter how much time he takes off, he always steps up blows minds.  Make no mistake, he works hard to do what he can do, but the talent is natural and plentiful.

Thanks to everyone who supported our Summer Reunion once again this year.  Your dedication is what keeps us grooving.  That and these incredible tunes, of course.

Luke Fair live at Freak Me Out, Bahrein Buenos Aires - August 5, 2017

This is obviously an incredibly meaningful set for the BTB crew. 471 Richmond Street West was essentially the house that Luke Fair built.  He headlined the space 13 times, with many of the sets of an open-to-close variety.  

The all-nighter’s allowed Luke to find his comfortable zone in the early hours, while playing some of the deeeep bombs we don’t often hear in his peak-time sessions.  He knew the room better than anyone and a lot of that familiarity came from being the one who dropped the first track. 

Today, we gift to you the first hour-and-a-half of Luke’s final set at Populus (aka TOiKA & Toika Lounge).  This is how Luke set the tone for what turned out to be an absolutely magical night—an event that was strictly about our friends and this music.
