The track "Room for Us" was a recording process of 8 years. It was written for solo piano in 1999. The arrangement was a process of shared mp3s and conversations with a group of Northeast Ohio musicians. A common request was, "Play what I meant, not what I played”. So the recording sessions were wide open in the early stages. As parts were added, the options would narrow, sort of like an oil painting...we committed and then worked creatively with what we had.

There's room for all of us on the planet. “Room for Us" is an extension of that idea. I've had conversations with fellow musicians in the last few months about the long winters in Ohio and how the lack of sunlight can be a challenge. From there my part of the conversation leads to a candid description of depression and the reality that many of us face every day. It's a real thing. And then someone says it out loud: "Sometimes I struggle with suicidal thoughts" ...

... that's the time we all need to know there is ROOM FOR US. We can talk to counselors and we can take the meds (I have and I do), but there's a time when I have to take those thoughts captive. I have to remind myself in those dark times that there's room for me... and that I'm not alone. There are many of us who walk this path. Sometimes hour by hour. I want this song be a window of light that says, “there is room”.

What is that room for?  It's there. We are in it together. I think for me it's about discovering deeper levels of living. Life. My family, grandchildren…there's more life to be lived. I had no way of knowing 40 years ago, when things began to unravel, that my grandkids would represent so much life. I couldn't see it then.

My hope is that the room we are in together will find us discovering that there's just so much more life to be lived. We can’t see it all yet, but it’s there. Thank you for listening.
