A British Academy Panel Discussion exploring the new arrangements for funding Higher Education from 2012 and their hotly debated implications for the Humanities and Social Sciences. With David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science; Jonathan Bate, Provost of Worcester College, Oxford; and Nicola Dandridge, Chief Executive of Universities UK. Chaired by Ann Mroz, Editor of Times Higher Education.

Speakers:

Professor Jonathan Bate CBE FBA is Provost of Worcester College and Professor of English Literature in the University of Oxford. His works include an intellectual biography of Shakespeare, Soul of the Age, an edition of Shakespeare’s Complete Works for the RSC, a prize-winning biography of the poet John Clare, and a one-man play for Simon Callow, Being Shakespeare. He became the British Academy’s Vice-President (Humanities) in July 2011.

Nicola Dandridge has been Chief Executive of Universities UK since 2009. She was previously chief executive of the Equality Challenge Unit, the higher education agency which promotes equality and diversity for staff and students. Nicola originally qualified as a lawyer, initially working in the City before moving to Glasgow to re-qualify in Scotland where she worked for 10 years specialising in equality law. She was educated at Oxford, London Metropolitan and Glasgow universities.

Rt Hon David Willetts MP is Minister of State for Universities and Science (attending Cabinet), and has represented Havant since 1992. He was a Visiting Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford, is a Governor of the Ditchley Foundation and a member of the Council of the Institute for Fiscal Studies. He has written widely on economic and social policy and his book, The Pinch: How the baby boomers took their children’s future – and why they should give it back was published in 2010.

Discussion chair: Ann Mroz has been Editor of Times Higher Education for the past three years. She began her career on music papers and has been at the THE for 15 years, including masterminding its successful relaunch in 2007.
