Originally recorded as background music in the bar scene in Frances Ha. I stayed up all night and wrote/recorded lyrics for it while Dean was in Spain promoting his book, Black Postcards, which had just been translated into Spanish. And it ended up on the Frances Ha soundtrack. Eric Broucek and I re-recorded everything for this version.

Originally recorded by Agnetha of ABBA for her first English-language solo album in 1983. Our good friend, Chris Hollow, suggested I cover this one. I struggled with the chorus for a while until I figured out how to sing it without the lyrics "Make love to me now like never before!" There are some pretty fantastic versions of Agnetha doing this on YouTube. I had that same bad haircut in 1983.

An outtake from, Luck or Magic,  released as a double A sided 7” which sees Britta covering Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”, (which precedes a full length solo album due in April this year on Double Feature Records. This is a recording from those sessions…)Recorded and mixed by Raymond Richards at Red Rockets Glare with Roger Brogan on drums,  Dean Wareham on guitar, and Raymond on slide guitar.

The AA sees Dean and Britta covering “Hey Paula”, (a Number One hit from 1962 for Paul and Paula) and was produced by Papercuts’ Jason Quever.

The 7” vinyl  from The Great Pop Supplement is limited to 400 copies and comes with racy artwork from artist Brian Calvin.

01 Daydream

Luck or Magic is my debut solo. I pay bass for Luna and have recorded three Dean & Britta albums and scored several films with my husband Dean Wareham, who plays guitar on this album. I was also the singing voice of 80s cartoon character Jem. Luck or Magic contains 5 original songs and 5 covers, including first solo releases by Dennis Wilson, Agnetha of ABBA, and Evie Sands, as well as hits by The Cars & Fleetwood Mac. 

I originally recorded this track for "13 Most Beautiful: songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests" but we ended up using another song. I recorded the vocals 4 years later, while paging through my lyrics notebooks. In 2105, I went into the studio with co-producer, Eric Broucek, and recorded real drums (Jeff Brodsky) on top of my demo. Then Sean Eden (Luna) added some trippy guitar swells. It's a favorite of mine that sounds/feels different from the others, which is why I put it last. Ingrid is freer, flying solo, unattached to any particular object of desire.

Scott Hardkiss (who began producing this album with me)suggested I cover this song. I never would have chosen to cover it, but I trusted Scott, so I recorded my vocal to his arpeggio. The track really came alive for both of us once Dean recorded the guitar solo. You can hear Scott's 3-year old daughter say "Britta" in the first verse when she walked in on us recording.

Originally recorded by Evie Sands for her first album, "Any Way That You Want Me" in 1969. This was the first song I recorded for this album and the final mix retains my demo's nylon guitar (you can hear Dean doing the dishes in the intro while I recorded in the next room) as well as conga and shaker loops.
