Originally created in 2004 and released on my second Album, "New Years Revolution", Fast is a little experiment I did in the Techno realm.

After 10 years of collecting dust, I was inspired by my good friend Trancix to do some remix work on this piece.  Just some D1600 drum machine, Prophet 600 synth, and a few movie quotes.  While I don't consider myself much of a Techno artist, I'm quite pleased with how this updated version turned out.

Originally released in 2005 on my third album, "Unsignable Volume 1", this song is a blatant wake up call:  

STOP Wasting Your LIFE watching TV !  

Nobody ever created anything original from sitting on their ass consuming commercial broadcast media.  Oh wait, I guess I did make this song by watching TV...   Damn, I wasted 3 days surfing cable and dozens of hours choosing clips, and dozens more making MUSIC out of this?   

Wasted?  Wait a minute...  

This is ART, so that time was Well Spent!   

But I've done my share of channel flipping, so I was really just trying to wake myself up with this message.  Let me tell you, cancelling Cable was one of my better decisions.  Now, I only have a dozen channels of free air waves.

"Hmmm, nuthin on.   Well, I guess I'll go down in the Studio..."

First Song off First Album.   This was also my first ambient experiment and a predecessor to techniques I'd later utilize for creating Cloud Shadows.

So, here's the story...  I lived in Tucson and we rented a house with a decent sized back yard.  Part of it was mostly dead Bermuda grass that would only grow after several straight days of good rain, or after forgetting to turn off the sprinkler overnight (done several times - doh  "Why's the grass suddenly a foot high ?!?!!").  But this particular day, the only grass that was long was right along the edge of the patio...

One afternoon, I glanced out the window to find a Bunny munching away at the line of grass along my patio edge.  I thought "oh Cool Man!  I don't even need to use my string trimmer to get that grass.  Thanks Bunny!".

Anyway, got a pen and paper and wrote this little ditty.   Then one early sunrise, I setup an SM57 to record the rake on one track, and push mower (very old mechanical one) on the other.   Hall closet for the vocals, mix it down and BOOM - 1st song and something unique to introduce myself with.

It was a very unusual way to begin a first album.  Set the tone quite well.  I ended the CD with a second version called Club Hoppin Bunny, complete with drums and synth.  So...  two Bunny Songs on one album.  Pretty goofy, but hey, that's me!

Little Bunny

This song is over a decade old, originally released on my second album "New Year's Revolution".  I've recently updated it quite a bit to make it more musically interesting, including re-recording the Bass and adding Guitar and Synth solos.  Intro is a morphed clip from the beginning of Primus' "Frizzle Fry" album.

Step Out by StRaNgE TRUTH (2006)

Inspired by the incredible images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, this song is an experimental exploration into sonic elements representing the infinite wonder of the universe.  With Prophet 600 Synth, Ibanez SR-500 Bass, Wind Chimes, Chinese Healing Gong, and Whispered Vocals, it's a fusion of elements both scientific and spiritual.

Over the years, backward messages in songs, whether intentional or imaginary, have been pointed to by certain "religious" folks as "proving" these songs, and perhaps any music of that same genre, to be "satanic".  I wonder what these people might think of my use of scripture presented in this form.  It's my opinion that backmasking is simply an artistic tool and certainly not inherently "evil".  If satanic messages recorded backward are super bad, then scripture recorded backward must be super blessed.  Why not use this tool to introduce light into a realm cursed with darkness?

For this particular song, it provided a way for uniquely encoding scripture to complement the atmosphere of the music, adding important spiritual elements to my sonic tribute to God's wondrous creation we call the universe.  There I go again, breaking the "rules".  Feel free to message me if you'd like to express your opinion on the subject.  

I prefer to think of these messages as an auditory journey back in time, much like when we peer into a telescope and see perpetually deeper into the past.  The segment containing frontward lyrics features a paraphrased quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, which I discovered on page 129 of the spectacular picture book "Hubble : Imaging Space and Time".

Solstice - The outside sounds are from my backyard on a warm summer night.  I'm not sure if those are bugs or frogs, but you can hear two loud creatures singing back and forth to each other.  There's also a Native-American shaker and a guiro from Bora-Bora.  The drum is my bass drum tuned to a low A note and played with a giant homemade beater. The primary percussion is a tongue drum.  This is a Mahogany box with a Teak mallet surface cut into several marimba-like bars.  The song alternates between 3/4 & 4/4 time.

Lava Pillow - My wonderful wife and best friend Terri came up with the name for this song.  She loves volcanoes and lava!  It's all Prophet 600 synth with some effects from my Art SGX-T2 processor.  There's an energy chime and shakers in the mix too.

Lava Pillow

Water of Life - The title could be a reference from the movie "Dune" if you'd like, but I was actually referring to the scripture from Revelation 22-17.  The melody is an Ibanez Artist series electric guitar with effects from the T2.  The brook is a stream at Fitzgerald Park recorded with the Sony field recorder.

Train Trip - This is my Martin Sigma acoustic guitar tuned to an open D-Major chord, sitting on my lap and struck with my fingers in rhythmic patterns on the harmonic frets.  The compression, phaser and auto-wah effects are from the D1600's onboard processor.   My friend Jackie gets credit for inspiring the title.

Train Trip

Ice Trees - We had a major ice storm a couple years ago.  As I was leaving work the following evening, I heard how the wind rustled the ice-coated trees and made them crackle.  I rushed home and recorded audio of the trees in my backyard using the NT5 mics into the D1600.  Floor tom, shakers and a Chinese healing gong are also in the mix.

Ice Trees

Canyon - The light rain was recorded using my NT5 mics pointed out the window to pick up the sounds from the backyard.  It was after midnight and you can hear the train engineer being very careful not to wake people as he quietly sounds his horn when required.  The "flute" noise is a vintage wooden alto recorder.  These are variations on some Native-American themes I wrote while living in Tucson.  I would often take this instrument with me when I hiked Gates Pass.  T2 reverb and digital delay on the "flute".
