@88katanas (Clayton Jones) is a producer/DJ, based in New York City since 2006. Originally from the Philadelphia area, he discovered Drum & Bass in late ’96 when the East Coast rave scene was exploding, and the emerging sound of Techstep was infecting the Philly/Baltimore/DC area.

This pivotal era allowed him to witness top UK acts while taking further inspiration from emerging local Philly talent like Dieselboy, Jordana, Karl K, Jae Kennedy, Kaos, J-Smooth, Mason, D-Star, Trust, Armanni, Sharpness and many more.

As the early 00’s progressed away from big raves and into the club scene, he was lucky to be one of just 50 people in the US selected for Red Bull Music Labs 2004, and was properly exposed to software production for the first time. First as 'Clay Nyse' and then under 'Dominion Audio' he continued to perform as a DJ and release music on Reminiscence Audio and Kian Asamoah's label Noisy Meditation, before rebranding as '88 Katanas' in 2018.

These days, he's set up an independent label called SMITH, collaborating with artists like Art Cuebik, regularly live streaming on Twitch with good friend Currency Audio and working as a freelance graphic designer for movies, television and music.

Originally released as a 4 track 2x12" vinyl on Subtle Audio in 2009, a very limited 10 track Subtle Audio CD version followed in 2010 before a licensing deal with Rephlex Records saw the CD widely distributed along with 3 (digital only) bonus tracks. Now that the licensing term with Rephlex has come to an end, we're releasing all 15 tracks from the 3 different formats in one digital download. Seems fitting to do it now, seeing as we are celebrating Subtle Audio's 10th Birthday this year and it's 5 years since the original release of this album.

"Time to enter the insane, weird, drum-centric world of Macc & dgoHn as the Subtle Audio camp proudly delivers its first album long player by this pair of not altogether insane East Londoners.

Subtle Audio has been pushing Drum & Bass with a slighly different slant since 2005 and this album could well be presented as their mission statement, it sums up the distinctive sound of the label perfectly.

Macc & dgoHn favour a breakbeat driven style and they incorporate their beats into ever shifting cinematic arrangements brim full of attitude and experimentation. Individually, their sounds have travelled far beyond the Drum & Bass microcosm and their work has been aired by the likes of Zane Lowe and Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 1. Aphex Twin is also an admirer and his festival playlists have contained Macc or dgoHn on more than one occasion. Now they unleash a volley of material from their collaborative archive which is set to disarm critics who thought Drum & Bass had run out of rhythms, arrangements and silly album titles. Toronto's Gremlinz has been carving a path of his own within Drum & Bass for over a decade, staying true to the core elements of the music and never wavering from his sound, regardless of whatever the passing trends around him might have been. His signature sound remains rooted equally in Reinforced/Metalheadz/Bluenote era Jungle as it is in Renegade Hardware’s early 2000s moodiness, bookended by equal parts Dub and Techno and tied together with an ever-present B Boy edge.

Its 1990 and a young DJ Ink has solidified his love for the culture known as hip hop- as the years move on so does UK street music, there are new genre’s forming and Ink begins to hear what is familiar to him, but there is a new twist-it is the UK passing by the USA, with a huge dose of African and Jamaican influence , and of course this is music to a budding Dj Ink’s ears. First begins the Pirate Radio Circuit, working hard at his craft, allowing the followers to get familiar with the roll, steadlily bookings began to build up and soon it would be time for Ink to become associated with three names that changed the landscape of British electronic music-and they were Basement Records, and slightly later Metalheadz and Renegade Hardware

This release comes as a limited 140g clear vinyl 12" pressing with full artwork sleeve + white glossy inner sleeve, including a mp3 download voucher + a free poster/inlay and all tracks mastered by Stuart Hawkes of Metropolis Mastering London.

Selecting tunes for releases on Samurai Music is difficult as there is so many great tunes on offer. The absolute cream of what we get sent makes it to releases on vinyl, so resisting the temptation of digital only releases creates a backlog of high quality tunes. Outliers is a collection of music from the Samurai family of artists that were all in contention for vinyl release, but for one reason or another slipped through the cracks. Most of these are still in heavy rotation in many of our DJ sets, so rather than hogging them, we put together a collection for a Bandcamp only release. Most of these have never been played by more than a few select Samurai DJ’s and the producer themselves. Outliers shows the depth of talent these producers have with these sitting on their HD’s without a home. We don’t plan on moving into the digital only release field any time soon so maybe we can have this series as a semi regular substitute.
