Midnight has an air of sadness and longing wrapped in nostalgia – the relentless driving groove of early LCD Soundsystem, soaring layered harmonies of Manchester Orchestra and guitar hooks reminiscent of The Cult. 

This is a song about regret, about our mistakes and waiting for that moment when we can make amends. Singer and guitarist Tom explains: ‘I wanted to write something that was about that second when, despite everything that has happened in the past we have a chance to change things – to repair. We all make so many mistakes. Screw up friendships. Say stupid things. Midnight – the moment when one day turns to the next – seemed like a neat metaphor for that second when things can change... or not as sometimes happens!’ 

Written on an old acoustic, the main melody and lyrics were thrown down using Garage Band in a day but this is a track that evolved gradually partly as a result of the weird circumstances surrounding the last two years. The drums, bass and guitars for the track were recorded at Mwnci Studios in West Wales before the pandemic. Produced by the band and Matt Lederman (Rural Alberta Advantage, !!!) who also mixed the record - layers of synth, dreamy arpeggio guitars, glockenspiel and vocals were added remotely from separate bedrooms and home studios across Wales (and Canada) during the UK’s period of intermittent full lockdowns over the last 18 months. The result is a 4-minute tour of the full range of the band’s sound, from a single arpeggiated synth to explosions of overlapping vocals, dreamy guitars and driving sixteenth note drum patterns.

Brimming with youthful exuberance, it marries the most infectious elements of The Libertines, Vampire Weekend, Tom Grennan and Ten Tonnes, weaving assured guitar riffs with punchy percussion throughout its almost 3 minutes.

Speaking about the song Harvey says, “‘For The Love Of It’ is a statement about how music should be created and played … for the love of it. Not following a trend, being able to connect with others, not forcing the art for the primary motive of money. The production portrays this. Playful melodies, groups of chanting teens, rough around the edges as a whole - a song to shout out together with your mates.  My painting of why I make music for the love of it.’’

The new single also comes after recently being snapped up by Paradigm booking agency for live shows. Now represented by Alex Hardee (Liam Gallagher, Sia, Clean Bandit), Harvey will play a headline show in London on 17th March at the prestigious Notting Hill Arts Club. 

Freshly tipped by This Feeling and XS Manchester as One To Watch in 2022, 'For The Love Of It' is another taste of what's to come from the uber talented singer-songwriter’s debut EP, due for release this spring.  Bringing together raw lyrical work with driving instrumentation, it effortlessly showcases why the 20 year old is onto such big things.

Hailing from Portsmouth, Harvey had already seen a remarkable ascent even before releasing music officially -  being tipped and playlisted by BT Sport and playing the Isle of Wight Festival for This Feeling last year.

More Information on Harvey Jay Dodgson

Harvey Jay Dodgson started playing the guitar at the age of 7 and by 9 years of age had written his first piece of music. His early inspiration came after being introduced by older brother Neil to the music of Peggy Lee, Billie Holiday and the free-flowing vocal melodies of Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles. He says, "It instantly opened my eyes (or should I say ‘ears’) to a completely different sound of music." It was discovering the jazz-influenced artists, King Krule and Cosmo Pyke who inspired him to experiment further and he was soon ready to create his own music. 

 Tipped by BT TV and Scotts Menswear as ‘One to Watch 2021’ He has recently performed at the IOW Festival. He will be releasing his debut fully produced EP in 2022.

In my twenties, I thought advice like “youth is beautiful” or “enjoy it while it lasts” sounded careless and vague.
Now in my thirties, I realize that those days—and even today—are radiant in their own way.
This track captures the feeling of holding a blank ticket, a pure canvas, still waiting to be painted.

20대에는 “청춘은 아름답다”, “지금을 즐겨라”라는 말이 무책임하게만 들렸지만,
30대가 되어 돌아보니 그 순간도, 지금 이 순간도 여전히 눈부시게 아름답다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.
불안 속에서도 우리는 여전히 무엇이든 될 수 있는 하얀 티켓, 빈 캔버스를 가지고 있습니다.
