This is my twenty-eighth piece in Disquiet Junto. Disquiet Junto is a special and important project to which I am grateful to be able to contribute.

This was nearly abandoned in a semi-depressed funk until I gave in to silliness. Not that it didn't start out somewhat silly, but my original vision was inspired toward an Hip-Hop-infused soundclash in the style of Malcolm MacLaren and the World's Famous Supreme Team. I gathered the Hyperloop-Alpha pdf from Tesla, and lyrics to "Hyperdrive" by Jefferson Starship, "Hyper-Active" by Thomas Dolby, and "Hyperballad" by Bjork for the session to record the vocals with Nicole. I ended up using only the Tesla stuff plus some improvised material, loading it into Acid Pro and arriving at the basic groove with Kontakt.

After putting the music framework together I ultimately wrote additional lyrics and recorded my own vocals. In the end it is overwrought like so many pieces of mine. I often begin by grasping for ideas, but before I am done they come in torrents, and I feel obligated to use them all. Much garbage is left in this mix - if I had continued working for twice the length of time I spent, this present track would have been quite a gem (and probably a minute shorter). I'm grateful to say that here - as opposed to the various remixes, instrumental pieces and other sonic exercises that I've produced within Disquiet Junto - I've composed a song - une vraie chanson de mon répertoire - which is my ideal result of doing this work. Although it demands further arrangement, it managed to transcend the "exercise" stage.

Mixing was begun in a Seattle hotel room and the track was finished in Portland. The three clips were cut-up and processed, then rendered as longer clips which were then layered and re-processed until something satisfactory resulted. The image is altered from "Portrait of David Ricardo" by Thomas Phillips, circa 1821.

And how could I resist a Disquiet Junto project called "Broken Clock" anyway? It has been about four years since my last Junto project, and far too long since completing a new piece of music, so this results mostly from a conspiracy of circumstances.

The project image possesses an ominous and harsh quality but I let go of my literal, negative and too-confining impressions to create this piece. The process was relaxed, and the track its rightful heir, although my initial impulse was to overload the composition with the multitudes of striations suggested to me by the project image. 

I put the original track into an existing, semi-dormant project in Reaper v5.962 having already some settings and midi files, added the percussion, and found the essence. I am grateful to how the night came for the beautiful melodies.

Alan Parsons - The Raven (The Stillness Broken By Reply So Aptly Spoken)

Music by Broken Hours, realized at Drummysgroin, January 10-11, 2020, this is my thirty-third piece submitted under the kind auspices of Disquiet Junto, a special and important project to which I am grateful to contribute. 

The project instructions were to create a piece of choral music from the provided samples. Before proceeding, I chose to look up the definition of "choral music." I also searched the term in my preferred music streaming service to obtain some examples. Satisfied that I had some leeway, I audited  all of the samples consecutively, and pushed them around in Reaper. I soon realized that this would be fun, and that it could go anywhere. 

I plucked a few samples from here and there, added some midi instruments, and the piece developed somewhat quickly(relative to my usual pace). The bedding is a band-pass equalized ambient recording in Drummysgroin, captured while working on the project. Interior. It's good to get this out there.

My intentions shifted from attempting a piece with complexity, schizo-layered with fragments of things I had been working on already in different keys and time signatures. I had also decided I wanted to make the next mournful thing, reflecting my own feelings lately. This latter inclination carried the day. When I come to a point during the work that I well up and shiver a bit, I know I've done what I'm supposed to do.

Thank you to all of the Junto members who submitted samples; you contributed to the total palette. I used roughly nine of them. I know who some of you are, but I inadvertently overwrote a couple of file names in the process of gluing items to fit the time selection.
