Made from material gathered during the Biosphere Soundscape residency in Sian Ka'an Mexico. The cracking sound is a crocodile hitting the boat with its tail, the drones are derived from boat engines.

'Rapturous is a fast ride with the Golden eagle Acquilla Chrysaetos  making its way from Joshua Tree Biosphere reserve to Beaver Creek, Arizona, USA where it was recorded.  The granulated eagle calls are stretched to represent the psycho-perceptual orientation of the eagle, solitary, looking down over the land. The tarhu is the eagle’s eye, a moving point through which we experience its strength, subtlety and economy in controlling the aerodynamic ride.  Listen with headphones. Cicadas, Crickets, Birds, Pacific Ocean, Rain, Frogs, Toads, Didgeridoo.

In January 2012 I traveled to Brisbane to visit my parents, to the suburb of Arana Hills, North of the city, where I experienced a whole new soundworld. The birdsong, crickets and frogs presented a new sonic experience. Dawn and dusk presented more excitement in the parks and trees as the animals and birds competed against one another in order to be heard. The unique sounds and melodies of the Bell Bird and the Pied Butcherbird amazed me compared with the harsher calls of the Cockatoo and the Kookaburra. I was a tourist for three weeks and all I had to do was listen.
The field recordings are from the parks around my parents’ house, the suburbs of Brisbane, and further up the coast to Rainbow Beach, Hervey Bay, Fraser Island and the Eco resort of Lady Elliott Island in the Great Barrier Reef. In the parks in Arana Hills I was amazed at how nature and man could live together. Even though the parks were busy with people, wildlife was plentiful, evident by the sounds. I became conscious of how much destruction of wildlife occurs around the world as humans intervene in natural habitats, and animals are forced to find an alternative home. This transforms the soundscape of an area.
This piece is an investigation into the natural soundscapes of these places, an exploration of their geophony (wind, rain, water) and biophony (sounds of plants and animals). It also raises the issue of the impact of human sound, (anthropophony) on these soundscapes and how it can take over and mask natural sound.

Revisiting some under-explored experiments in "self-directed" sonic systems from Design After Nature project in 2008.  An experiment in maximal minimal generative systems (most variety, from simplest system).

What if sound determined the conditions of it's unfolding? 

In this example a tap dripping controls its own playback.

Pseudocode: 

Play sample
Listen for onsets
If above threshold (probabilistically) 
- change direction and speed (as an inverse function of the frequency of strongest partial -- to create a simple homeostasis) 
- resynthesise N partials according to the original energy distribution at the point of onset detection.

This simple routine draws out and explores the latent rhythmic and spectral content of everyday sounds. Endlessly.

It has a of life of it's own that I find quite pleasing. But I have been living on my own for nearly 3 months now : )

Making Waves is a monthly series of curated playlists streaming one hour of quality, new composed music.  Founded in 2015, Making Waves shines a spotlight on the music of Australian composers. Fresh playlists are released on the first day of each month and older playlists are made available all year round via our archives; perfect for those with just a few minutes to explore one track or for hours perusing a myriad of diverse sound-worlds.


The project offers wider exposure to emerging composers, their music and the talented performers who champion it. We also provide an easy-to-access platform for listeners to sit back and enjoy a curated hour of exciting new music or explore our living composers more actively.  The playlist themes (and media through which they’re shared eg. Soundcloud, YouTube) evolve each month depending on the content received directly from our talented composers.

At its core Making Waves is a curated listening space. In 2016 we branched into producing our own content through a special project, Making Conversation, thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign. Making Conversation: Australian Composers Project is a series of podcasts and vodcasts presenting the human side of living Australian composers, released on popular audiovisual and social platforms mid-2017.
Composers Lisa Cheney (Melbourne) and Peggy Polias (Sydney) are curating this project.
