Design Matters

Michael Rock is a founding partner and Creative Director at 2x4 and Director of the Graphic Architecture Project at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. At 2x4, he leads a wide range of projects for Prada, Nike, Kanye West, Barneys New York, Harvard and CCTV. Before starting 2x4, he was co-founder of Information incorporated in Boston. From 1984–91 he was Adjunct Professor of Graphic Design at the Rhode Island School of Design and since 1991 he has been a member of the design faculty at the Yale School of Art where he holds the rank of Adjunct Professor. In addition, he was a fellow at the Jan Van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht, The Netherlands, and a contributing editor and graphic design journalist at I.D. Magazine in New York. His writing on design has appeared in publications worldwide. He holds an A.B. in Humanities from Union College and a M.F.A from the Rhode Island School of Design. He is the recipient of the 1999/2000 Rome Prize in Design from the American Academy in Rome and currently serves on the board of the Academy. He is the author and editor of Multiple Signatures, on the history and development of 21st century design.

Bob Gill is a designer, an illustrator, a copywriter, a film-maker and a teacher. After freelancing in New York, he went to London on a whim in 1960 and stayed for fifteen years. He started Fletcher/Forbes/Gill, a design office with the two brightest designers in England. F/F/G began with two assistants and a secretary. Today, it's called Pentagram, with offices everywhere except Tibet. Gill returned to New York in 1975 to write and design Beatlemania. Gill has had one-man shows in Europe, South America, the Far East and in the US. He was elected to the New York Art Directors Club Hall of Fame and the Designers and Art Directors Association of London recently presented him with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Peter Buchanan-Smith is the founder and principal of Buchanan-Smith LLC and the author of several books, including Speck, and The Wilco Book. He was awarded a Grammy for his design of Wilco’s album A Ghost is Born. (03.24.06)

Milton Glaser is among the most celebrated graphic designers in the United States. He has the distinction of one-man-shows at the Museum of Modern Art and the Georges Pompidou Center. In 2004 he recieved the lifetime achievement award from the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. As a Fulbright scholar, Glaser studied with the painter, Giorgio Morandi. In 2010 Glaser was awarded the National Medal of Arts, he is the first graphic designer to receive this award. (10.12.10)

Ralph Caplan is a writer and communications consultant and lectures on design. He is the former editor-in-chief of I.D. Magazine and the author of several books including By Design: Why There Are No Locks on the Bathroom Doors in the Hotel Louis XIV and Other Object Lessons, Cracking the Whip: Essays on Design and its Side Effects and The Design of Herman Miller. Caplan is an Emeritus Board Member for the International Design Conference in Aspen. An honorary member of the Industrial Designers Society of America, he is the 2010 recipient of the “Design Mind” National Design Award.

In this audio interview with Debbie Millman, Ralph Caplan discusses being kicked out of high school, working for Industrial Design, the difference between making things right as a designer as opposed to making things nice, branding, the civil rights movement, fashion, obsolescence, and the responsibility of the designer.

Alex Bogusky’s career in communications began over twenty years ago when he joined Crispin and Porter Advertising in 1989 as an art director. He became the creative director five years later, a partner in 1997, and co-chairman in 2008. In 2010 Alex left what he called, "the best job on the planet," to create The FearLess Revolution. He and his band of insurgents, in what they refer to as "the new consumer revolution," are creating, consulting, and reporting on the emergence of a sudden and powerful counterbalance to corporate power: an educated and empowered consumer. Their most recent project is COMMON, a creative community for rapidly prototyping social ventures.

John Bielenberg helps organizations find the courage and the sense of humor to consider whole new “wrong” ways of bringing their stories, ideas, and innovations out into the world. He is currently collaborating with Alex Bogusky on COMMON. In his career, John has won over 250 design awards, was nominated for two National Design Awards from the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has acquired six of his projects and staged a solo exhibition in 2000. John is also a founding partner of C2, MavLab, and Nada Bicycle Collective. (09.30.11)

Dori Tunstall is a Design Anthropologist, meaning she tries to understand how the processes and artifacts of design help define what it mean to be human. Design Anthropology argues that by taking into account how others see and experience the world differently, products and services can be designed that work with people and nature rather than disrupt them. Dori is an Associate Professor of Design Anthropology at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia as well as Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching in the Faculty of Design. (10.07.11)

Design Army is one of the best and brightest design firms in the D.C. metropolitan area. Started in 2003 by Jake and Pum Lefebure, Design Army works with everyone from the Washington Ballet to AIGA to the Washingtonian. Clement Mok is an award winning designer, digital pioneer, software publisher, app developer, author and design patent holder. He began his career in the design department at CBS, then moved to Apple, where he joined the Macintosh team. During his five-year stint as a creative director at Apple, he made computers friendlier and more accessible. When he left Apple he started Studio Archetype, which he eventually sold to Sapient Corp. in 1998. He has founded multiple other successful design-related businesses, including CMCD and NetObjects. He is the reason phrases such as experience design, information design, information architecture, interaction design, strategic design, brand identity, interface design and customer experience are part of our lexicon.
