Welcome Home beim SUBGROUND TALK, unserem Podcast für die elektronische Musikszene!

Für Folge #11 hat sich der Live Artist und Open-Air Venue Betreiber Jim aka J.Wockenfuss mit unserem Host Moritz getroffen.
In seinem Studio in Kreuzberg spricht Jim über seine vielseitigen Aktivitäten in der Szene und erzählt lustige Anekdoten aus seiner Musikkarriere.
Jim wuchs in der Nähe von Güstrow auf, lernte dort Klavier und Schlagzeug und spielte in einer Jugendband. Nach dem Abitur zog er 2011 nach Berlin und suchte sich auch hier eine Band, mit der er durch Europa tourte und eine großartige Zeit hatte. Nach der Trennung der Band begann er 2016 mit der Solo-Produktion elektronischer Musik und fand seinen Platz in der Berliner Techno-Szene.
Seitdem engagiert sich Jim in verschiedenen Veranstaltungskollektiven wie dem Oewerall Festival und Afterhour Sounds. Seit 2020 ist er Co-Betreiber des gART.n Berlins und tritt unter dem Namen J.Wockenfuss live auf.

Unser Host Moritz lädt dazu verschiedenste Menschen ein: Artists, DJs, VeranstalterInnen, Crews, Technikteams, ProducerInnen und spricht mit ihnen über Musik, Clubs, Festivals, Werdegänge und Insider Stories aus der Szene. Außerdem schauen wir regelmäßig bei unseren guten FreundInnen vom 3000Grad vorbei, um über alles zu reden, was vor, während und nach dem Festival passiert. Wir möchten so auch Zugänglichkeit zur Szene schaffen und Möglichkeiten für kulturellen Austausch und Raum für Diskurse über unsere Wertebasis und Ausgestaltung geben.

“Wir” sind SUBGROUND - Ein Veranstaltungs- und Szenekollektiv, welches aus der unabhängigen Streaming-Plattform subground.org (https://subground.org/) hervorgegangen ist. Unser Host - Moritz König - und (3000GRAD-Verantwortlicher) Molle aka Mollono.Bass gründeten die Plattform 2020 als Support für die vom Corona Lockdown gezeichnete Szene, sodass sich diverse Clubs und Kollektive Online darstellen und Spenden sammeln konnten. Mittlerweile steht SUBGROUND unter anderem hinter verschiedenen Veranstaltungsreihen wie Klangwald und Rave Cage und arbeitet eng aber unabhängig mit 3000GRAD zusammen.

🗯🗯 How Did Corona change your artist life? 🗯🗯

During the last months I have had hardly any live gigs and events with my collectives anymore. This has been tough, for in my perception, the symbiotic relationship between myself at the DJ deck and the crowd on the dancefloor is crucial for a satisfying DJ set. I need to see the people’s reaction to my music, losing it all, sweat dripping down their bodies - then I create a matching soundtrack. This got harder with social distancing and memories of former events fading, so I started looking for Inspiration at other places, mainly my favorite music genres metal and trap. This set undeniably reflects these influences.

Still I am impressed by all the projects that emerged from the electronic underground in no time during the first lockdown to fill the creative void. This also made us start our PRIZM:Berlin podcast to keep on providing a platform for non cis-male artists. In addition, I was looking for creative outlets that would not be limited by Covid as much - back to my sewing machine, guitar and writing. My self-designed top hats made some people very happy. Let’s see what will become of my crazy song lyrics.

🗯🗯 Where did you record the mix and how did you feel? 🗯🗯

I recorded it on my rather outdated yet very sonorous home stereo system. My dad gave me the amp when I was moving out, I assume it’s  about my age. The mixer is a „permanent loan“ from a friend when I first started DJing in 2013.

The sound of the mix strongly reminds me of my last festival gig this year at Milde Möhre. Some seemed confused at first, but soon downtempo lovers and techno fans were dancing side by side. It was a very intense experience - all made possible thanks to a rigorous hygiene routine.

🗯🗯 What are your wishes for the time after Corona? 🗯🗯

Most societies proudly define themselves through art and cultur, Germany even more so, yet they provide so little support. Artists are being idolized and at the same time they belong to the poorest in this country. Unfortunately we’re not as good at lobbying as the car industry. For all I care, those politicians can go and listen to some engines roaring on the radio as soon as the Pandemie will be claimed „under control“, but don’t they dare visit our concerts! There is no life without art, but that’s where we are heading, and I want them to know that - and grant it the appreciation und support it deserves, once and for all.
