It was the psychoanalysts (Jung, Frued, Adler, etc.) that popularized and cemented the idea that we aren't the masters in our own houses, which means that the individual human mind isn't a single entity, but is much more comparable to a collection of sub-personalities/entities/spirits.  This song is about dealing with these divisions of the mind as the protagonist searches for identity, meaning, and purpose. The concluding theme is that we must make time to do the things that make us feel most alive, in spite of the negative mind chatter (self-sabotage) that inevitably appears anytime we decide to pursue a worthwhile goal.  Persevering through these challenges via sacrificing time (making this song, in my case) is the mythological equivalent of the slaying of dragons. There's always a beast in the sea (in the depths of our psyche) that we will eat or be eaten by. On to the next one!
