Farrell Adams ¬ Biography

With roots firmly entrenched in the Cape Town underground, Farrell Adams has been an independent voice for South African music since 1991. While studying journalism at Peninsula Technikon, his musical horizons were broadened in 91 when he met and started playing with James Reynard. The experimental rock/jazz outfit Nine was born. During its 10 year existence, Nine, consisting of James Reynard (guitar), Jerome Reynard (drummer with Arno Carstens) and Grenville Williams (bass player and producer of Godessa, Teba) produced two albums - Nine and Entropy (available through Loophole Music) - and toured the country extensively. Having played all the major festivals in the country, including OppiKoppi, Rustlers Valley, Up the Creek, Woodstock and the hugely successful Benson & Hedges Band Slam Tour (with Springbok Nude Girls, Lithium, Squeal and Sugardrive), Nine found a fresh angle through the creation of their alter-ego, The Firing Squad.

It was during this time that Farrell met and started playing with Dj Bob and Blunted Stuntman of the 206 crew, and the Boogieman made his way into the world. As with the bands, the Boogieman has dj'd at most of the major festivals throughout the country, as well as a myriad of clubs and high profile corporate gigs including the Sitengi Film Festival Opening, The Loerie Awards and the launch of the The Most Amazing Show. "As long as it funks, Ill play it", he says. "From disco to drum n bass, I set the pace. Spreading love and happiness to the whole wide human race."

It was this dance floor orientated thinking that led to the development of his next band project, the inimitable and controversial Golliwog. Born on the dance floor of District 206 in Cape Town, Golliwog initially took the form of a freestyle act, taking over from the djs last tune and jamming until the people could not dance any more. This phenomenal band consisted of the cream of Cape Towns young jazz scene, and the line-up included Rob Nel (B-World, Interzone, Flat Stanley), Kesivan Naidoo (Tribe), Lee Thomson (Hog Hoggity Hog, Springbok Nude Girls), Nick le Roux (Errol Dyers, Reenboog), Dan Shout (Johnny Clegg, DSQ), Blunted Stuntman on the decks, and Norwegian maestro Gorm Helfjord on guitar.

In June 2005, Blaze McLeod convinced Farrell to relocate to Johannesburg to start work on his first solo project. This musical collaboration with Kevin Leicher (Plum), led to the composition of a number of songs which make up the album, Little Sins, available in stores.

1. You Are My Music

The second track from the new bRoTheRmAn & Groove Assassins album entitled POLARISATION. This track blends both live and electronic elements.  It attempts to treat the spaces in between the notes with the same attention as the actual notes and sounds. With Farrell Adams on the microphone, singing his words. Inspired by artists such as Radiohead and Bon Iver.

2. Atomik

Connecting Dots is the third track from POLARISATION - the new bRoTheRmAn & Groove Assassins album. The words, written by Jason Rusch, are dedicated to his Goddaughter, Tigue Cinnamon Rae Rusch. It is a song about the friendships and family that surround her, and how she will always find protection therein. It is a song about the deep connections that transcend geography, time and adversity. It is a song about community.

3. Connecting Dots

Track four - Dragon Closer off of the new album POLARISATION by bRoTheRmAn & Groove Assassins. Farrell Adams on the microphone. Jason Rusch on the lyric sheet. A shout out to some of the mainstay Groove Assassins from the previous three albums: Lu de Pina (Thirteen, The One Night Stands, Florida Lake) and Steve East (Caytie Marvelis, Crystal Park).

4. Dragon Closer

The fifth track - Human Zoo - and we are half way there. POLARISED - the new album by bRoTheRmAn & Groove Assassins. Lyrics by Paul Steenkamp. Farrell Adams on the microphone. A song about the modern world, and a mess quite unlike any the world has ever known. The first step in recovering from any problem is to admit the problem.

5. Human Zoo

Number six on this, the new album POLARISATION, by bRoTheRmAn & Groove Assassins. Dave Stevens aka Wolf Ears is up to bat lyrically, while Farrell Adams delivers on the microphone. This is a song written in Dublin, Ireland, a very special place to a number of the Groove Assassins. It is a song about having a clear perspective. It is a song about appreciation. It is a song about life.

Track number seven from POLARISED - the new album by bRoTheRmAn & Groove Assassins. Farrell Adams on the microphone. A song about trying to be a better human being. A shout out to Farrell - this man is a musical genius. His music general knowledge is astounding. His sense of melody, his ability to nail a vocal hook and his creativity make him one of the best vocalists to work with. Thank you Farrell for everything!

7. Awakened

Track number eight from POLARISATION - bRoTheRmAn & Groove Assassins. Featuring Mr Bong lyrically and in musical collaboration. Farrell Adams on the microphone. A song about the potential of love, made and taken away; the residue left over.

8. Comin' 'Round Again

Hows The View From There? Track nine from the new album POLARISATION by bRoTheRmAn & Groove Assassins. Neil Strydom, based in London, wrote the lyrics. Neil is an extremely talented writer. The lyrical  writing process was unusual. Firstly, the basic experience was written. Secondly, the story was fleshed out with detail into a short story. Finally, the short story was edited down to a poetry-like format suitable for musical accompaniment. bRoTheRmAn then wrote the music, inspired by the words and the process. With Farrell on the microphone, this song is haunting.

9. Hows The View From There?

The tenth and final track from POLARISATION - the new album by bRoTheRmAn & Groove Assassins.
