Perhaps the Sea - EP

So, I use a little french to appear sophisticated, non?  Actually the french is a nod to old JMJ - saw him a few years back in Brussels, still think Oxygene and Equinox are the business.  There is also a bit more Vangelis going on in the intro, but I don't know any Greek, so bad luck old Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, as he is known for short.

So, I was asked to provide the music at a wedding in November. A rare chance for a live gig.  I had to arrive in heavy disguise to avoid the fans.  Once I got on the stage it was "Good evening Dirleton!" and I was off.  It can get quite lonely up on the stage.  I virtually made love to a crowd of 70 people and had to go back alone to my house. With my wife.

So I said to my German pal, Ludwig, here listen to this. "Ya. is gud" he says.  "What have you been up to?" I ask. "I haf invented eine time machinintechnic" and of he pops back to 1801 and steals my entire idea!

In memory of Euan Turner, 13 February 1970  - 11 June 2015.

This is one of Euan`s photographs of the Scottish mountains from his collection "All roads lead to here".

This is a downright suggestive track about, well you know, sexy stuff.  Its a collaboration between myself and Euan Turner, once of the Tartan Ameobas.  His expertise in percussion can be heard on the track.  The suggestive female vocals are provided by the very suggestive Iona Goldie.  I got this piece featured in Computer Music Magazine a couple of years ago.  The high water mark of my musical achievements thus far.

Whatever you want me to be

This track starts all piano - you need 5 hands for it so you either need a freakily large number of upper thoraxic appendages, or an octopus.  That would be overkill though.  Anyway, gets a bit more electronically wonikly half way through with a neat bass line from my erstwhile collaboator Euan Turner. The title comes from a line in a well known poem by a dead poet, "The confirmation".  One of those ones that doesn't rhyme.

The right human face

Plain and simple pop song harking back to the 1950s style. A simple song about the old story of boy meets girl, girl spends boys money, girl dumps boy, another boy meets girl, first boy reflects on superficiality of human relationships, writes a thesis on this and becomes a celebrated professor of psychology (that bit doesn't make it into the lyric as "I felt jolly annoyed, so I turned my mind to Freud" didn't quite scan). 
Vocals are provided by Ross Morrison.

One trick pony

Old Pachabel eh? He knew a thing or two.  This piano solo emulates (meaning - steals the idea) his Canon in D, gets a little Claydermanish at times, but is a satisfying piece to play (as it is easier to play than it sounds - it avoids them fiddly black keys).   Photo cred: Pixbox77

Planet jarre

Totally Vangelis type intro which gives way to an uplifting motif which I basically mangle for the remainder of the track (a bit like Vangelis's "Alpha" but without the quality). Still, I like it. Perhaps my art won't be appreciated fully in my lifetime, like Van Gogh.  Perhaps it won't ever be appreciated, like Millicent T Villy-Bile whose 18th Centuary mucus-based landscapes never really caught the public imagination and she forever languishes in obscurity. In Orbit

Bit of olde worlde piano solo which would make a suitable soundtrack for a Radio 4 classic drama. Something melodramatic by Ibsen or Flaubert I imagine. Ok yes its not strictly a piano solo. A string orchestra and choir do appear but don't do much other than turn up. Here is the clever bit - its an acoustic version of one of my archive set.  But which one?  Haha, that's for me to know and you to not really give a damn about. Hey! Someone get that harpsichord out of here.

Satie rather cornered the market in hypnotic piano solos.  But since his death in 1925 there has been a bit of a gap in the market.  These 3 pieces are inspired by his music - although I was not imagining naked Spartan men and boys dancing at the time (the alternative title that old Eric gave his first gymnopedie). Caravan memories

Ok, so I'm not dead.  Just moved from North Berwick to Brussels.  Taken a bit of time to get things sorted out.  So, now I'm in the centre of Europe with so much going on, what do I write music about?  Dourly homesick tracks involving bagpipes, fiddles, celtic harps and accordians, thats what. Sad really.  Lochan Uaine is a strangely green lochan in the Cairngorms in the central Highlands of Scotland.  The green colour, it is fabled, comes from the clothes of the the local forest fairies that apparently wash their clothes in the lochan. Mystical supernatural beings they may be but they still haven't mastered fade resistant dyes.

Vangelis "To the unknown man" has been a bit of a sound track to my life - a simple yet unforgettable melody which builds repetitively then switches from anthemic to pop.  I've plaigerised that structure initially, the tune gets more pop like as it progresses then I switch to a moody, Lisa Gerrard type crescendo ending.  Why? Because I'm a boundary-breaking, anti-genre rogue composer you can't put in a box, that's why.

Yes, this does sound a bit like an off-cut from "the Piano". Still, if its anywhere near that good it's worth listening to.  Bit of an experiment in 3/4 time - like to keep it edgy you know. Would be difficult to have a jolly time dancing to this.  Like to seem them try on "Strictly".

Submersible

Hello.  This soundcloud site has a bunch of original compositions which represent many lonely evenings work, by candle-light while I slowly died of consumption.  No, hang on, that was Mozart.  Anyway, when I'm not hanging out with David Guetta, William Orbit and - oh that chap with the glasses on the television,  I like nothing better that to twiddle about with knobs and dials.  Other times I write music.

Right now Covid lockdown in the UK has given me the opportunity to revisit my sad, middle-aged fantasy of becoming a synth wizard with my increasingly outmoded software and the continual failure of the public to recognise my boundless talent.  One day my fortune will be made when some bored Japanese TV producer will happen upon one of my tracks and consider it an ideal jingle for a kids programme involving a wise and friendly octopus that tells comforting stories and covers basic maths.  Well, you've got to dream.
