Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint dips back into the electronic melting pot to compile its fourth “electr*c” compilation in as many years. The fruits of intensive exploration of the cracks and crevices within today’s wonderfully fractured bass music movement, Brownswood electr*c 4 features exclusive music from a new crop of up and comers. Some like Frenchman Nikitch and Belgian wunderkind LTGL are fresh out of the blocks, whilst the likes of Deft, Adam Elemental, Glenn Astro, D Tiberio and B Lewis have cultivated relative online infamy in recent times, each carving out their own unique path and singular artistry. 

As usual we run the full gamut of styles, skipping from searing hypercolour hip-hop/bass hybrids; through ever so slightly wonky deep house; furious footworkin’ D&B that recalls vintage Metalheadz cuts circa ’96 (but somehow sounds steadfastly futuristic); awesomely drunken R&B; wrecking ball 808-driven bangerz; and introspective emo bumps… It’s a cluttered, chaotic, hyperactive kaleidoscopic trip – no doubt – but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Founded by Alex “Patchwork” Stevenson (Patchwork Pirates / Earnest Endeavours) in 2010, the aim of this series was very simply to replicate the ethos of Peterson’s much loved Brownswood Bubblers series and provide a platform for new, up and coming artists starting to make waves in the worldwide underground. It’s an approach that has characterised Gilles’s approach to DJing, broadcasting and music from the very beginning of his career and it lies at the very heart of his accidental slogan: “Searching for the perfect beat”.

The inaugural Brownswood electr*c in June 2010 provided a compelling snapshot of the dance music underground’s greyer areas, rounding up then newcomers (now major players) Shlohmo, Rockwell, 16bit, George Fitzgerald, Mosca and Mount Kimbie. Subsequent volumes burrowed deeper into the warren-like electronic landscape uncovering hidden treasures from Ta-ku, Koreless, Synkro & Indigo (these days known as Akkord), Stray (one third of Ivy Lab) and highlighted underground anthems by the likes of Dub Phizix and Krampfhaft, in addition to a whole raft of exceptionally talented newcomers.

Brownswood and Gilles Peterson are proud to stream the first track from our latest project with Havana Club, Havana Cultura Mix - The Soundclash! 

In 2009, there was ‘Gilles Peterson Presents Havana Cultura’ followed by a remix album. After that ‘The Search Continues’ (2011) and then ‘Mala In Cuba’ (2012). Now we have ‘Havana Cultura Soundclash’, a compilation of collaborations between Cuban vocalists/musicians and unsigned artists from around the world.

All projects have brought musical exchanges to Cuba — with its illustrious yet traditional music scene — a nation where rhythms (salsa, rumba) exist as the lifeblood of its people; where access to new music is limited, barely any broadband internet service and decent home studio technology is rarely affordable. Despite this, Havana boasts a solid homegrown hip-hop scene and vibrant nightlife ruled by reggaeton, with house, techno, EDM, dubstep, trap and moombahton breaking through.

Besides, cultural exchanges are the essence of electronic music. Cuban rhythms (especially Afro-Cubano) trace back to the heart of dance music — from disco through to Chicago house and beyond — cross-pollination is what keeps it moving forward, so what's wrong with bringing electronic music to a nation that in a way helped birth it?

This is what ‘Havana Cultura Mix - The Soundclash’ is all about. After sifting through hundreds of entries to a remix competition, 10 artists from all over the world (UK, Germany, Hungary, Holland, South Africa, Russia, Switzerland, Chile and Cuba) were selected by Gilles and his Brownswood production partner Simbad to travel to Cuba to work in the studio with hand-picked singers, rappers, percussionists, brass and key players to put together an album.

“Yemaya" is Gilles Peterson's favourite track from the new album. Chillum Trio is the solo project of Hungarian producer Géza Szekeres. Drawing from a wide range of influences—soul, jazz, afro beat, hip hop, bossa, dub and electronica—, Géza’s vision is to marry Afro and Latin beats with the dusty sound of the 60s and 70s’s while adding a touch of modern electronic vibes. 

In Cuba, Géza collaborated with Yeni and Coki from the rumba group Aguiri-Yo. “My devotion to West African music led me on a search for Cuba’s African roots,” he explains. “When Coki and Yeni came to the studio, they sang an amazing song dedicated to Yemaya— the Yoruba goddess of the sea. Yeni’s awareness of Coki’s presence just blew me away and their vocals matched my music seamlessly.”

Sub bass, dirty drums, spheres and soulful voice cuts are the core of Saint Petersburg-based producer Gleb Voev (Raumskaya)’s sound. He is one of the creators of Beryoza Russian Ghetto Community project— “Our childhood memories incarnated in bass music and pop melodies from the past,” he explains. 

“Daymé has a beautiful, powerful voice and a big, romantic heart,” comments Gleb. “I think we created a soundtrack for life filled with emotions and kindness— it’s a song about love as the music in my life.”

Brownswood are delighted to announce that we have signed Cuban singer Daymé Arocena.
Daymé was part of the Havana Cultura Mix project, which saw Gilles Peterson mentoring selected producers from around the world to make a record in Cuba with local musicians. She auditioned, prompting all producers to decide they wanted to work with her... In the end, she sung on three tracks on the album, including the massive "U Knew Before”. Seeing huge potential in her, Gilles invited her to London to perform at the album launch event, where she enchanted the packed out audience, and it was decided she should record a solo project for Brownswood Recordings / Havana Cultura. The announcement brought out a loud, rich, infectious laugh instantly recognizable as Dayme’s deep and chocolaty voice. “My first record, here,” she squeals. “It’s a crazy dream.”

Daymé Arocena - Madres

In the middle of 2014, with all roads leading to Brazil, DJ, tastemaker and cultural curator Gilles Peterson embarked on the project of a lifetime, his most ambitious to date: setting up camp in a recording studio in Rio to record a sort of love letter to the nation under the artist name “Sonzeira” (meaning a joyful / killer sound). The resulting album “Brasil Bam Bam Bam” was a deeply personal work, bringing together the many authentic sounds and traditions but always through the eyes of an enthusiast inspired by 30 years of DJIng and record collecting. As Gilles said at the time: ‘Brazil’s music culture is massive..There’s the North – Bahia, Recife, the afro-brazilian sound. There’s batucada, the heavy sambas. Then bossa nova - Tom Jobim and all that history. There’s baile funk. There’s Tropicalia and the more soulful, funky scene championed by groups like Banda Black Rio, Trio Mocoto and icons like Gilberto Gil. Such a huge amount of stuff to fit in. I wanted to try and cover it all – to make a kind of Buena Vista meets club culture, but to keep it sonically very modern.’ The album included star turns from Brazilian superstars young and old, including ‘City of God’ actor and singer Seu Jorge, the grande dame of samba, 76-year-old powerhouse Elza Soares, and world-renowned percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. Of course, this was a Gilles Peterson record and so there was also many left turns -  who else would come up with Emanuelle Araujo’s bossa nova take on the 80s UK jazz-funk hit Southern Freeez, or draft in Seun Kuti (youngest son of Fela) to join the dots between modern day Brazil and the slave ships that bought poly-rhythms from Africa 400 years ago.

Of course, with roots so deep in the interesting edges of club culture it was natural for Gilles to continue this journey into new sonic territories. As such he has spent the last 6 months curating this new album “Brasil Bam Bam Bass” drafting in some of his favourite producers, friends, and associates to reimagine tracks from the album, with all the taste and good judgement you would expect. Much like the original record this is a very personal curation, a considered work that saw Gilles hand pick producers to re-imagine the album track by track - these include At Jazz, FaltyDL, DJ Oil, Kyodai, Max Graef and many more. Also included on this double CD are some wonderful outtakes (including the sublime reworking of Yusef lateef’s Plum Blossom previously only on the vinyl box set of the album), and dubbed out alternative versions of several tracks by Gilles’ Sonzeira co-producer Dillip Harris.          

If the original record was about examining Gilles own history and love for every quarter of Brasil’s sound, this provides a further glimpse into Gilles’ creative mind, ever serching for connections between rhythms; exciting, imaginative and original productions. Most of all this is a record where respect for the source material continues to shine through.

After the success of their previous albums Owiny Sigoma Band’s forthcoming long player “Nyanza" continues to bring eclectic and intriguing musical ideas to the table.

Following from the release of "Changaa Attack", Owiny Sigoma Band bring fresh perspectives to cross-cultural collaborations. To make this record, master Luo musicians Joseph Nyamungu and Charles Owoko, invited the London contingent of the band to the Nyanza province of Kenya in the heart of a region called Luoland, to discover the roots of Luo Music. Travelling with a suitcase full of recording equipment the band set up studios on the fly. Louis Hackett the bands bass player produced this hypnotic response after a 12 hour changaa fueled session of hard Nyatiti soundclash. Utilising Owoko’s fierce Nyiduongue drumming and a one take vocal workout from Nyamungu, “Luo Land" is another wayward dancefloor workout for the late night freaks.

‘Ancient Mechanisms’ is the fourth album by globetrotting London production duo LV. It traces a train of thought that was sparked by a live session with Tigran Hamasyan back in 2012: two and a half years down the line and a trip to Belgium later, the finished record is as much about the workings of musical artefacts as it is about putting the virtuoso pianist into new contexts.  

The duo, made up of Simon Williams and Will Horrocks, found the insides and mechanisms (hint) of the instruments they were working with to be of increasing interest as the project developed. They found a discarded, portable piano in the former’s new flat and spent hours painstakingly recording its notes, creaks and noises. This left them in possession of a MIDI keyboard that sounded like something from “a bar in a wild west movie” and featured heavily on the album. ‘Ruiselede’ makes reference to the town whose piano museum in which they were able to record Hamasyan playing on its collection of antique grand pianos.

LV have always thrived by working with new collaborators and environments. In the past there’s been joint efforts with London poet Josh Idehen and journeys to South Africa for kwaito-infused productions with Johannesburg MCs. It was from working with Hamasyan that their attention began to shift to the piano itself. “We got into the sound that instruments make themselves, not just the production of the sound,” says Williams, “We got into the actual sound of keys being hit.”

Anyone who heard the Maida Vale session that laid the foundations for the album will know how exciting it was to hear delicate jazz musicality at play with UK-tinged dance rhythms. ‘Jump and Reach’ builds on that potential, with circling piano going toe to toe with rolling drums and stabs of bass. But Hamasyan wasn’t just providing pretty riffs for them to work with, he also fed into the process of how they worked. As Horrocks says, “His musical interests are much more broad than perhaps people would expect,” something that’s on show in ‘Infinite Spring’ where his penchant for looping pedals has produced a wash of sound easy to fall adrift in.

The exploration of what lay inside the instruments in front of them is the thread holding this unique record together: strands ranging from foreign surroundings to the darker corners of London’s club lineage are channelled into exploring that idea. There are field recordings of Belgium’s streets along with snare hits in ‘Transition’ that nod to the studio where a nascent dubstep’s sparse aesthetic was born. As an album, it draws together disparate interests in a way that feels compellingly coherent.

LV - Transition

This unique band (pronounced: oh-wee-nee si-go-mah) is made up of 3 Londoners: 
brothers Louis and Jesse Hackett, and their school friend Tom Skinner and 2 gentleman from Kenya, Joseph Nyamungu and Charles Owoko, both masters of traditional Luo instruments, the Nyatiti and the Nyidoungue Drums respectively. 

The 28th of August will bring the release of their 3rd album ’Nyanza’, for which the group were invited to the Nyanza Province of Western Kenya, the Birthplace of Luo music, and homeland of Joseph and Charles, to record and craft the record closely with the roots of Owiny. 

The creative process of the Owiny Sigoma Band in the past has been crucially intwined by localities, memories and stories, as well as an element of spontaneity from their jam sessions. ‘I Made You / You Made Me’ sung by Jesse is a track inspired by the birth of his daughter. Stirred by hearing “purely happy” African popular music on the radio and taking early morning walks with gospel emanating from the churches Jesse challenged himself to write a joyous pop song.  This track beautifully reflects the ambience and energy of the environments in which it was made, and as well as Owiny Sigoma Band’s raw and organic collaborative process.

Sonzeira - The Mystery Of Man (Rainer Trueby & Corrado Bucci Present Truccy Remix)

Living between San Fran and DC, Diggs Duke is firmly cemented in the exciting soul & jazz scene coming out of the US. Rooted in jazz, Diggs Duke arrangements eschew traditional song structure for a looser groove-based aesthetic, punctuated with short bursts of Dwele-esque vocals.

It takes a certain kind of musical talent to fit such a wealth of ideas into this small a space without things feeling cramped. This new track sees him doing just that- showing off a gorgeous musicality.

The sparse arrangement of 'He Wants To Live Like You' finds all kind of beautiful tension in the gaps, Diggs performance on vocals and keys a reminder of his shining talent as a musician.

This new cut from Daymé Arocena - a re-imagining of Peven Everett's dancefloor shaker 'Stuck' - comes from her new One Takes EP. The EP finds Daymé Arocena bouncing around ideas with label boss Gilles Peterson & co-producer Simbad to put her unique spin on five different covers. Re-imagining cuts ranging from Italian obscurities to US house heroes, the sessions (as you might guess from the title) were about taking down whichever ideas came first. Working in a tradition of covers that's long been ingrained in jazz as well as Latin music, One Takes finds them taking that approach and running with it.

It's a perfect vehicle for Daymé to bridge musical worlds in a way that's always come naturally. With an upbringing split between classical training, early jazz greats like Billie Holiday and the spiritual and musical foundations of the Santería religion, she's grown up seeing the bigger picture.

'Gods of Yoruba' is version of a Horace Silver track, an example of how the finished EP is almost as much a tour through interesting corners of Peterson's record collection as it is through Daymé's range as a performer.

Overseen by the DJ and record collector of 30-years, this second album picks up where the first one left off. Where Brasil Bam Bam Bam brought together the all-stars of Brazilian music, this album focuses on a key moment in the country’s history; a record made at a crucial moment serves as the jumping off point for an open-ended project of musical reimagining.

Kicking off 2011 in fine style, Worldwide Family is a new series from Brownswood Recordings that will see label head Gilles Peterson hand over compiling duties to trusted friends of the label in our perpetual pursuit of the perfect beat. And who better to launch this new venture into orbit than two of our closest cohorts: Lefto and Simbad. Both gents are globetrotting DJs, respected selectors (with web-like worldwide connections) and the two are firm friends. What’s more, they have repped Brownswood from the beginning.
