Hi,
The seed of this witchtape was planted a few months ago, when I wrote this little fairy tale on a cold winter evening.  After I completed writing it, I had the strong feeling that this story needed a soundtrack and that it should be made by a true witch – so I sent the fairy tale to Hilary and she was really enthusiastic about this whole concept.  And this witchtape is the result.  Actually my story was only the starting point as Hilary worked it out as a truly epic witchy fairy tale... an instant spellbinder.

Deep in the forest, the witch felt powerless and heartbroken as she witnessed one of her beloved trees crashing down.  She looked in anger at the logger and his big brown dog.  She needed to stop him from doing more harm, but the question was how.  Witches follow a strict code of non-violence and – contrary to popular belief – they don’t know any dark spells.  Then she had an idea.  The human was obviously a hopeless case, but she felt his Belgian shepherd might have some common sense.  So she sent her friend the owl to talk to the dog.  The bird swiftly flew to the big canine creature and explained him that his owner really should stop destroying mother earth.  The dog became very upset and disappointed and started barking at his boss.  The man tried to control his long-time companion but the dog became more and more ferocious.  Meanwhile the witch – who was still very young and insecure – gathered all her courage and approached the man from behind, with her owl sitting on her shoulder.  The dog saw this happening and stopped barking.  So the man went back to business, or at least that’s what he thought.  When he turned around, he had the biggest shock of his life and his face turned pale.  Standing just two meters in front of him was this girl with bright green eyes, staring straight into his eyes with a stone-cold face, while an owl was sitting on her shoulder doing the same with his big eyes.  The young  witch (who had never done a thing like this before) became all of a sudden very confident as she felt that every living being in the forest was supporting her, and she felt how her eyes really started to glow with a power she never knew she possessed.  The dog started barking again and this time he really attacked the logger.  The man looked away from the witch and made a quick getaway, in such a state of panic that he left his chainsaw behind.
Meanwhile the witch started comforting the agonizing dying tree with a new faithful friend on her side :  a big brown dog…

Witchtape #16 | Guest Witch : Hilary Mertaugh

Hi,
I must admit that I have a special relationship with my bicycle.  Actually, it’s the only material thing in my life I’m really attached to and we share the same road for thousands of kilometers per year.  I have the luck to live in the countryside of Belgium which means that most of the time I’m riding through lush green landscapes and along meandering rivers, making me forget the noise of the modern world.  While riding my bike, I open all my senses, spot dozens of species of birds, admire the flight of the herons and cormorants, see how the colors of the flowers evolve day after day, listen to the sounds of frogs or woodpeckers, feel the wind blowing through my hair.  In short, I’m in my own paradise when riding my bike.
And this podcast from Goro makes me think of my bicycle trips.  There is a steady heartbeat going through the whole set and it seems to be exactly the same speed that my legs are moving when riding my bike, while an ever-changing green landscape rolls by at just the perfect speed, not too fast, not too slow.  At least, that’s what I experience when listening to this podcast.  I know that other people will experience something completely different when listening to this set.  And that’s exactly the magic of deep house music, with everybody finding his own paradise…

Zen Baboon are Daniel Rosado and Henrique Palhavã. Both were born in the '70s in Portugal and since an early age kept a close connection with the musical world, focusing on great sound quality and original construction.

Daniel is a sound engineer that worked in a studio in Lisbon and started producing electronic music in the late 90′s.  Henrique, a zoologist, lives and works in his own farm and started as an ambient DJ, (DJ Henriq) and producer in 2001.

They got together in 2003 and decided to melt their musical preferences and create Zen Baboon.

Witchtape #40 | Guest Witch : Paboona

(Story continued from Witchtape #34)
It was already well past midnight on this full moon night and it had been a long and intense day for the little witch.  Barely 18 hours ago she had never seen another witch in her whole life (as she had been living all alone in her forest since her early childhood), but now she found herself in the loving presence of two elder witches while attending the very first witch coven of her young life.  It was getting a bit cold and the eldest witch had just lit up a campfire (with a few magic sparks).  Slowly the little witch – who had been really tired after this long day filled with mystic ceremonies – was starting to feel warm again.  She looked up at the full moon (which was really bright and yellow that night) and almost instantly she felt the subtle moon energy run through her whole body.  She experienced it in every cell and even had the impression that she was so fully charged that her long brown hair was standing upright (which wasn’t the case, but that’s how it felt).  Suddenly she heard some rhythmic music.  She looked around and noticed that the other witches didn’t seem to hear it.  Then she realized the music was only present in her head, yet touched her soul deeply.  Her body kept on heating up and she started to feel a bit uncomfortable in her clothes… until all of a sudden she reached her boiling point, jumped up, shook off all her clothes and started to dance in a state of ecstasy.  The two elder witches looked at this spectacle with amazement… and smiled briefly at each other while they observed the young girl going wild.  Clearly, this little novice was making progress much faster than expected, blossoming open from a shy reclusive girl into a real fiery witch in a matter of just a few hours.  And for the first time she was even leading the witch coven, as a forebode of things to come.  Of course the elder witches didn’t stay still for long… they also got up, shucked off their clothes as well and joined their little sister in her ecstatic dance, which would go on for many, many hours until finally the moon would disappear behind the horizon to make room for a particularly glorious sunrise.  When the first rays of sunlight touched their skin… the witches stopped dancing and the eldest witch started to sing an age-old sweet song with a soft voice.  She was soon joined by the other elder witch and even the young witch started to sing in harmony with her two sisters… singing effortlessly without realizing that nobody had ever taught her how to sing that song…

Witchtape #54 | Guest Wizards : Dauw & Schemering

(Story continued from Witchtape #53)

After saying goodbye to the tiny little black witch in the middle of the African rain forest, the witch and wizard flew eastwards, following the equator.  The unspoiled forest underneath them was so vast that two hours later, they still hadn’t reached the edge.  It’s a little known fact that also wizards can fly, as their code of conduct dictates them to travel the world on foot, except when they’re in the company of a witch.  So it’s easy to understand that the young witch was a much more skillful flyer than the giant wizard, who hadn’t flown for nearly a century.  Soon the girl got into a playful mood and started to make some perfectly timed loopings and corkscrews around the clumsy wizard, while giggling and yelling the whole time without interruption.  Meanwhile the sun was going down and they were looking for a place to spend the night, when they saw the contours of a huge volcano light up in the soft evening twilight.  The couple climbed to a higher altitude, until they were above the tree line where they decided to land.  They touched down on a patch of soft moss, and soon they were lying in each other’s arms, finally reunited after 5 months of separation.  It was getting cold quickly, so the little white witch snuggled really close to the giant black wizard, caressing his grey beard while his hands enjoyed the incredible softness of a young witch’s hair.  Soon a majestic full moon rose above the horizon, while the witch and wizard listened to each other’s heartbeat, which was soon joined by the faint but bouncy heartbeat of the unborn new witch who was clearly enjoying the company of her father, as she refused to fall asleep.  It was well past midnight when the three of them fell asleep, under the soft moonlight, high up the slopes of a volcano which was towering above the pristine African rain forest.  They woke up before dawn, and became immediately spellbound by the myriad different colors of the morning twilight.  Slowly the mountain bathed in light and when the little witch looked at the wizard, she started to laugh when she saw dewdrops all over his long beard (after which he started to chuckle too).  Just seconds later, the first ray of sunlight hit the mountain and soon they were bathing in the sun, while the forest in the valley was still plunged in darkness.  Soon time had come to continue flying into the direction of the sun.  The wizard became very excited as he knew that they were nearing his home ground… the village where he was born and raised… the destination of their epic trip to the heart of Africa…

(Story continued from Witchtape #40)
The little witch gazed at the near full moon and was already feeling excited about her next witch coven, which happens every full moon night but always in another location and each time in the ever-changing company of witches from all corners of the continent.  But this month, her body started to feel ticklish one day earlier than normal, so she decided to take off and fly in South-Eastern direction, following her inner compass.  She flew much further than ever before, over mountains and valleys, and after that more mountains and more valleys, in the process flying over a deep blue sea twice, before finally reaching her destination, a land which was much warmer than her home country in North-Western Europe.  It was also drier, yet way more varied and diverse, a mosaic of Mediterranean shrublands interspersed with lush green valleys with olive and fig trees, which the girl had never seen with her own eyes before.
Her inner compass told her to fly northwards, and soon she was heading straight towards a majestic snow-capped mountain when all of a sudden she sensed she had reached her destination and touched down gently near a waterfall on the southern slope of the mountain.  The place felt like the garden of Eden, with flowers blooming in the most wonderful of colors and birds singing everywhere.  The little witch now looked at the water of the little lake at the foot of the waterfall, which had a mesmerizing blueish-greenish color she had never seen before.  She soon became attracted to a rock in the middle of the river, and before she knew it, she had shrugged off her clothes and waded into the river.  The water was unbelievably clear and pure, which was absolutely normal as it came straight from the glaciers near the mountain top.  This also meant the water was ice-cold, but luckily witches can withstand the cold very well.  The girl swam at a gentle pace towards the rock, while listening to the soothing sound of the nearby waterfall.  This river didn’t feel like an ordinary river as she sensed a strong energy inside each drop of water.  This energy seemed to reach a maximum near the middle of the river.  Just at that moment, the little witch saw a very old witch arriving at the right bank of the river.  Back in Europe, she knew a witch who was 850 years old (and she thought this was already very, very old), but this witch turned out to be over 6000 years old, making her realize the history of this place went back all the way to the dawn of civilization.  After a while, the little witch looked at the other side of the river and to her amazement a very young witch had arrived on the left bank.  The girl had shiny curly black hair, intense black eyes and she was clearly in her mid-teens.  It was the very first time the little witch had met with an even younger witch.  Almost synchronously, the 2 witches joined their European guest in the water and soon they found each other in silence in the middle of the river.  The little witch got almost overwhelmed by the strong but contrasting energies of the 2 other witches, connecting at the same time with the immense life experience and the vibrant youthful energy of her two sisters witch.  She sensed this would become the most memorable witch coven of her whole life…

Witchtape #61 | Guest Wizz : Baba Sikander

(Story continued from Witchtape #60)
The little witch was enjoying a very welcome shower under the waterfall at the foot of the mountain.  She was soon shivering from the ice-cold melting water from the glaciers of Mount Hermon, soaking wet and feeling stripped to the bone while at the same time feeling purified by the crystal clear water which was slowly on its way southwards to the lowest place on planet earth… the Dead Sea.  The witch of the North was soon joined by a young teenage witch from the desert in the East and a 6000-year old witch from the Mediterranean shore on the West.  Soon they let themselves float in the water while holding each other in a tender embrace with their legs intertwining.  Despite the freezing cold water, the little witch soon warmed up by the close contact with the two other women.  Her body even started to glow as she felt the youthful energy of the desert witch enter through her skin, where it merged with the immense wisdom of the elder witch.  Soon she felt their powerful collective kundalini schingeling flow through her body, while the 3 women floated towards the middle of the river where they slowly started sinking in a slow spiraling movement, which became faster and faster while the 3 intertwined witches sank deeper and deeper into the abyss.  Yet the little witch felt perfectly at ease in the loving presence of her two sisters witch, while the spiraling movement became faster and faster.  At one point, she didn’t feel the bodies of the other witches anymore.  It was as if the three of them merged into one superbeing and the little witch felt young and old at the same time, black and white, north and south and east and west fused together into one single underwater vortex, while the girl completely lost her sense of time and space.  She had no clue how long they continued spinning around.  Maybe minutes, maybe hours, maybe weeks… until all of a sudden the spiral slowed down and the witches slowly returned back to life… back to reality…

This is the third episode of a true story of a school trip to a lost world… East Germany just before the wall came down… (episodes 1 and 2 in Witchtapes 46 and 47)

We were happy to leave the town Erfurt behind us, where my classmates and I had spent our very first night on the other side of the iron curtain.  For all of us Erfurt was an eerie ghost town with empty streets, covered in thick fog and the air was so polluted that some of my classmates even had trouble to breathe.  On top of that, the hotel was a shabby place with brown tap water and horrible food, including a murky substance which was supposed to be yoghurt (which I ate but most of my classmates went on a voluntary hunger strike, probably hoping things would get better the next few days).  Actually, we felt so uncomfortable in Erfurt that we all wanted to go back to Belgium.
It was a long and shaky bus ride from Erfurt to Dresden in the outermost south-eastern corner of the German Democratic Republic.  Actually, we rode on a very bumpy concrete highway which had been built by the Nazi regime in the 1930s and hadn’t seen much repairs in the next 50 years.  The mood of the schoolgirls was getting better while the sun started to shine.  And we were slowly getting used to the sight of all these primitive Trabant cars on the road.  But when entering the City of Dresden, something broke down in the front suspension of the bus (it turned out that it couldn’t be repaired in East Germany, which meant that a few days later the bus would crawl at a slow pace from Dresden to Berlin before finally getting the much-needed repairs in West-Berlin).  When entering Dresden, I was shocked to see that there were still some buildings in ruin and visibly blackened by the allied fire-bombing of 1945, which was already 42 years earlier.  
Luckily, after getting out of the bus it became immediately clear that this city was a surprisingly vibrant and pleasant place.  Up to that moment, we didn’t interact much with the locals.  We thought that was pretty normal in communist countries, where people from the West (even 17 year old schoolgirls) were regarded suspiciously and we thought it was more or less forbidden for the locals to talk with tourists from the West.  And we also believed that the population of all communist countries had been brainwashed with propaganda, so I couldn’t imagine that it was possible to have a pleasant conversation with the locals.
Luckily, in Dresden we quickly found out this was not the case.  To our great surprise, the local people were really nice and friendly towards us… and visibly warmer and more laid-back than the West-Germans.  Their mentality was even pretty similar to the Belgian style, so it was very easy to connect and we chatted (in our broken German) with lots of lovely and sweet teenage girls and boys, who were apparently very eager to get in touch with foreigners.  This made our stay in Dresden very pleasant and all the Belgian schoolgirls started to feel very much at ease.  The hotel was way better than the one back in Erfurt and although they also served the same peculiar substance named ‘yoghurt’, all my class mates finally got hungry again and spontaneously gave up their hunger strike.
The town of Dresden was really beautiful, at least the part of the historical center which had already been rebuilt… some old building were still being reconstructed while the most famous church (the Frauenkirche) was still a pile of rubble back then.  Actually, reconstruction of this church would only start after the reunification of Germany and fortunately this beautiful monument has now been fully restored in all its glory, symbolically completing the rise from the ashes of the beautiful and vibrant city of Dresden…
