Just then another groan reached their ears, and the sound seemed to come from behind them. They turned and walked through the forest a few steps, when Dorothy discovered something shining in a ray of sunshine that fell between the trees. She ran to the place and then stopped short, with a little cry of surprise. One of the big trees had been partly chopped through, and standing beside it, with an uplifted axe in his hands, was a man made entirely of tin. His head and arms and legs were jointed upon his body, but he stood perfectly motionless, as if he could not stir at all. Dorothy looked at him in amazement . . . “Did you groan?” asked Dorothy. “Yes,” answered the tin man, “I did. I’ve been groaning for more than a year, and no one has ever heard me before or come to help me.” “What can I do for you?” she inquired softly, for she was moved by the sad voice in which the man spoke. “Get an oil-can and oil my joints,” he answered. “They are rusted so badly that I cannot move them at all .  . . “I shall ask Oz for a heart,” said the Tin Woodman; “for brains do not make one happy, and happiness is the best thing in the world.”

Toto barked sharply and made a snap at the tin legs, which hurt his teeth. . . It was Toto that made Dorothy laugh, and saved her from growing as gray as her other surroundings. [Dorothy and Toto are caught up in a cyclone that deposits them and the farmhouse into Munchkin Country in the magical Land of Oz. The falling house has killed the Wicked Witch of the East, the evil ruler of the Munchkins.] “There’s a cyclone coming" . . . . wind on every side of the house raised it up higher and higher, round and round it went, until it was at the very top of the cyclone; and there it remained and was carried miles and miles away . . . .

What could the little woman possibly mean by calling Dorothy a sorceress, and saying she had killed the Wicked Witch of the East? . . . . “You are very kind, but there must be some mistake. I have not killed anything.” said Dorothy “Your house did, anyway,” replied the little old woman, with a laugh“. Bruce Klepper is a Colorado based composer with thousands of listeners worldwide. Klepper studied music composition in the 1970's and received a degree in music composition and theory.  After writing music for many years and starting a tech company based in Colorado, Klepper retired in 2014 from business so he could devote myself to his true passion, composing music. Klepper's music premiered in Carnegie Hall, September 2022.  Klepper writes music in a number of different styles, including contemporary classical music, jazz, soundscapes using field recordings, ambient music, and ballet music.  Klepper has been composing music for Danse Etoile Ballet (www.danseetoile.org) since 2016. Klepper has been collaborating with Parlando School of Musical Arts (www.parlando.org) faculty Britta De Groot and Sergei Govorov for over a year now, composing and arranging new music for the dynamic piano and saxophone duo to premier around the United States. Klepper's music can be heard on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and SoundCloud.
