 This song began by Chris writing it with his acoustic guitar at the beginning of last summer. He passed it along to me, who added the piano and slide parts. Then Chris got it back and added the rhythm section of bass and drums, along with some electric accents. It's been a few months since we've released a collaboration together, not by choice, but because of our busy lives. We have been working on this one for about half a year, trying to add and cut other elements into it. We ended up deciding to put out a simpler version, which is what you hear here. It's been a long time coming, and is our final offering of 2023. It's been a great year of sharing music with all of you out there in SoundCloud land. I appreciate all of your ears, support, and sharing of your talents. We hope you enjoy listening to this one as much as we enjoyed making it. Happy new year 2024!

Piano piece, imagining life in the big city. Inspired by taking a recent trip to New York. I think of this loosely as a three part theme and variations. The middle section is inspired by Rachmaninoff's Moments Musicaux No. 1. There is much exploration of the harmonic major scale, as well as major and whole tone elements.

Controlling Everything

An intimate, stripped back piano and vocal cover of Shake Off The Rain by The Paper Kites.

This is an early attempt at the song on piano; but I really liked the atmosphere that came out of it so I decided to share it. The whole thing is recorded live in one take; just voice and piano; so there are small imperfections here and there but it keeps that feeling of a first sketch captured in the moment rather than a polished studio version.

I play it slightly slower than the original with a few pauses and stops; letting some lines hang in the air and placing a bit more emphasis on different parts of the vocal phrasing. The idea was to make it feel like quietly singing to one person in a small room; keeping everything soft and close while the harmony stays fairly true to the original.

Recorded in London on a baby grand as part of the Rita Road Sessions. No heavy production; just a warm room sound; a relaxed vocal and the sense of watching the rain outside the window. If you like indie folk; rainy day songs and minimal piano vocal covers; I hope this version keeps you company for a while.

Shake Off The Rain – The Paper Kites (Stripped Back Piano Vocal Cover by olliray)

Rich, pampered girl from Abilene, Texas meets a trail-worn cowboy with a checkered past, and they head north to avoid her family's scrutiny. It's a doomed relationship from the start, of course, and only lasts until the snow breaks.  Abilene comes calling - she heads back home, and the cowboy does what all cowboys in trouble do (at least in the songs I listen to) - he splits for the border.  True story?  Maybe...
 
The timeline in the song is a little convoluted - begins in the middle and then back to the start, then to the end and back to the middle etc.,..   But you old cowhands will figure it out.
