q. pls introduce yourself:
Chi Caldera aka Tropical Hi-Fi.

q. is there a story behind the mix?:
I’ve been living in a subtropical rainforest inside an ancient volcano for the past couple of years and this mix/edit was created there. It’s a blending of ancient and future, where tribal sounds and echoes of uncharted worlds meet four to the floor machine rhythms and synthesisers. I also added some environmental field recordings I’ve made here in the rainforest during the monsoon season.

q. what's the best way to enjoy your mix?:
With your complete and undivided attention, comfortable, eyes closed... or on headphones as you navigate your way through the urban jungle.

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...
A fossilised coral mask from the island of Timor.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
New music with accompanying 35mm and video currently under construction.

Decided to do a more thematic set this week, dedicated to the incredible Japanese jazz label Three Blind Mice. I don't have a ton of their records but wanted to highlight several I do have, and that might not be as "famous" as some of the other TBM records that have been repressed recently. Hope you dig it! In an age of hyper-consumption, the present can seem like an eternity. Regardless of how deeply one may feel to be aware of this fact, it is hard to shake free from its grip. After a long day's work we’ve got responsibilities, whether personal or familial, that need attended to in a space of time which more often than not is woefully inadequate. To quell the discomfort of this reality, we reach for an array of widely available sedatives requiring the least of us before repeating this cycle the next day. In musical terms, this usually means 3 minute fantasies few ever get to experience or unresolved traumas being hurled at us over top of a catchy melody and heavy bass; this is hardly fulfilling, to say the least. Understandably so, this leaves many yearning for the “good ol’ days”, but with the vast history of soul fulfilling music created worldwide, it would be criminal to relegate these creations to the past; just as the wheel has not outlived it usefulness, all good music maintains its utility as a tool to reinvigorate the spirit; the dreams of tomorrow are created in the present from foundations laid in the past. The challenge of today is not to dwell on what once was or was not but rather to envision what can be. This collection of music was carefully selected in order to strengthen our spiritual resolve as we work towards building the tomorrow which we all rightfully deserve, together.

A tribute to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through song & occasional spoken moments from the man himself (also a brief snippet of the legendary activist/comedian/thinker, Dick Gregory). I chose music which to me reflected Dr. King's life & words; A man of God, family, and a freedom fighter who did not hesitate to give his own life in the pursuit of justice for his people and human rights across the globe.

Reverend King (A Tribute In Song To The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)

To understand the music of John Coltrane you must understand the long genealogy of the genre of African Diasporic cultural expression—called Black (or American) Classical Music or jazz as it is often labeled particularly, as it moves back and forth on the time/space continuum.  From the Now moment. To the Future moment as yet seen. To the complexities of the past. Back to Now. Never in a linear path.     

You must listen to Sun Ra. Diz. Bird. Sonny. Brother Ah. Abdullah Ibrahim, Celia Cruz, Tito. Hugh Masekela. Abby. Max. Ella. Nina. Holiday. De La. Tribe. Guru. Heavy. The birds. The Wind. The rain.  

You must be able to map the material and non-material experiences…often improvised in response to the conditions within which Africana peoples found themselves. 

You must understand the deep ancestral, historical, and spiritual memory of a people to simultaneously be aware of these conditions while also seeing a world beyond those conditions. 

John Coltrane—the person, the musician—is a vital link in the long chain of humanity—a representation of an African vibration of humanity. 

Amiri Baraka in his article John Coltrane: Why His Legacy Continues? writes: “Why does his legacy continue to influence our lives, our music, and the arts?...Trane emerges as the process of historical clarification itself, of a particular social/aesthetic development…When we see him standing next to Bird and Diz, an excited young inlooker inside the torrent of the rising Bop statement, right next to the chief creators of that fervent expression of new black life, we are seeing actual point and line, note and phrase of the continuum. As if we could also see Louis and Bechet hovering over them, with Pres hovering just to the side waiting his entrance, and then beyond in a deeper yet to be revealed hover, Pharoah and Albert and David and Wynton or Olu in the mist, there about to be, when called by the notes of what has struck yet before all mentioned. Trane carried the deepness in us thru Bird and Diz, and them, back to us. He reclaimed Bop fire, the Africa, Polyrhythmic, Improvisational, Blue, Spirituality of us…the Free Jazz! Was parallel to Free Angela! Free Huey! The Ballot or the Bullet! Free Black People!” (192: Digging: The Afro American Soul of American Classical Music)

For Amiri Baraka, and others, “Trane still sounds inside us as the freedom we seek, the total expression of our lives as the expression of the Human headed soul, teaching that the flaming paradise of his music is in us to create the world we live in” (194: Digging: The Afro American Soul of American Classical Music)

But above all of this…more than any of this…to understand Trane you must understand his wife, Alice Coltrane.  You must listen to her organized vibrational melodies that seek in their own space to free people, who did not know they needed to be freed, and as of yet still not know they need to be freed.

Today, we will listen to a radio documentary produce by the Pacifica Archives, titled Trane Lives.  We hear Alice on Trane…and Trane, less than a year before he moved beyond.
