S01E04 - Loquace

Since the news of Jay's death this August, I was not able to bring myself to write. On one hand, I would have so much to write about such a genius, but he meant so much to me personally too, so much that I could hardly start. In addition to all that has already been said about Jay, I would like to add my message, which is very personal to me.

I was the last manager Jay had; we did a lot together, from charities in South America to helping the victims of the tsunami in Japan alongside Seth Troxler. We released an album under the concept of Music 2.0, the interview he did that brought the Resident Advisor server down due to being such a polemic subject.

This album was titled Love=evolution. I did all the copywriting, tour bookings, and management with him. It was the first time I had ever managed an artist, let alone such a global tour. Not only did Jay initiate my career in music in this field of management, but during the time I managed him I had just graduated with a major in Psychology (Sociology & Third World Politics), and he also helped initiate me in mental health linked to artist work, which I still pursue today. During the years that Jay grew up, mental health was still a taboo, so I fear he did not receive enough support in that area. I would like to use this space to raise awareness of the importance of seeking and offering help to one another.

Jay had his demons, and in the past years it was quite hard for him, battling with the two sides of this genius personality: one the devil, and the other a true angel. An incredible genius of mind and artistry, one I want the memory of to live on, so I decided to release this recording.

This recording from fabric, 20 years ago, exactly in August, is one of my favourites, as valid then as it is valid now, this thing about timeless music.  When I started managing him in 2011, I got this recording to remind him of his own power; at that point he had already been through so much. Again, the battle for Jay was constant, so I used this as a reminder of the amazing beast he is. He nicknamed me Ice Dawg, following that.

My dear hizzle, rest in peace; your memory lives on.

I will do everything in my power to collect his unreleased music together with Lara, the beautiful daughter he left behind who lives in Peru with her mother, Estefania Vilallobos.

Love=Evolution, my darling, and we love(d) you.

Bruno Gervais hails from Paris, where in 1988 he began playing clubs like la Locomotive, le Palace, le Privilege and les Folies Pigalle, sharing turntables with Dave Haslam, Laurent Garnier, Erik Rug or Mixmaster Morris. At this time, Bruno was also resident dj at radio FG.

In 1993 Bruno moved to Uruguay, where he quickly established himself as a force in the underground scene there, as well as in Argentina, playing the biggest clubs & festivals in Buenos Aires (Pacha, La Morocha, El Divino, Museum, Creamfields...), Punta Del Este & Montevideo (Space, la Morocha, Cream, East Festival & Camel genuine Sound) and spinning side by side with international Ricardo Villalobos, Angel Molina, Lee Burridge, Moguai, System F, Groove Armada, Deep Dish, Darren Emerson, Jeff Mills, Steve Lawler, Jimmy Van M, Nick Warren and local Hernan Cattaneo, Luciano Supervielle (Bajo Fondo Tango Club), Nicolas Lutz, DJ Koolt, Romina Cohn… all stars.

Never being content with the same old thing, in 2001, Bruno grabbed his crates and moved to the USA, setting up his turntables in NYC (Cielo, Lotus, Sullivan room, Centro Fly, Halcyon,Void...) playing alongside Pete Bones
Francis Harris, Alexi Delano, David Holland or Danny ”Buddah” Morales…
