Marco Shuttle "The Horror" [brut! 14]: 350 copies in clear vinyl.

Resident Advisor review:
"The Horror (Redux Edit)," as its title might suggest, contains a mighty long sample of Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. Marc Houle would be proud. Shit is creepy. Kurtz is pitched low, the techno around it is suitably tweaked enough to inspire a shiver or two. Isolation here, though, is induced by the most normal of instruments: The lowly trumpet. Marco Shuttle places a few of them inside "The Horror," each one sounding like a plane struggling to hold its altitude in the face of inclement weather and quickly losing the battle.

"Folha Seca" is no less unsettling, but it's quite a bit bouncier nonetheless. Shuttle once again finds himself utilizing what sound like acoustic sample sources, but leaves them (again) to wither away. Ever-present in its second half is a tangled horn sample, which putters away like hornet's in front of a busy nest entrance. It's the main event here for the most part, and at times it's more than enough. But at nearly 12 minutes long—the same as the A-side—it starts to drag by track's end. Treat it as a tool, and you'll be fine. Find a way to make it the highlight of your DJ set, and you'll either be the most boring DJ alive or some sort of idiot savant.

Phonica review: Dope new 12" from the infamous Little Fritter, featuring vocals by cult dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. "Top Notch Poet" builds a rough and ready groove around Kwesi Johnson's poetic meanderings. Pretty straight forward and percussive, it's a deadly tool in the hands of those that know what to do with it. On remix duties, Ekkohaus adds a bit more deepness to the proceedings, especially a bassline that's makes all the difference to the original. Limited pressing of 200 clear vinyl 12's.

  "Kostas Tassopuolos ist, der Name legt es Nahe, ein griechischer Musikproduzent, dessen Veröffentlichungen ich schon seit längerem eingehend beobachte. Nachdem er - wie könnte es auch anders sein - von Griechenland aus- und in die bundesdeutsche Hauptstadt Berlin gezogen ist, ging's bei ihm erst so richtig los mit der Produzententätigkeit. Unter dem Pseudonym Ekkohaus veröffentlicht(e) er bereits auf Kickboxer und Cargo Edition, doch - jedenfals nach meinem Dafürhalten - lenkte er die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich und sein musikalisches Potential so richtig erst mit "The Healer" (erschienen zu Beginn diesen Jahres auf Morris Audio, http://www.discogs.com/Ekkohaus-The-Healer/release/1762512).
  Nun hat er nachgelegt, und zwar auf dem in London beheimateten Label brut! Records (http://www.myspace.com/brutrecords), das unter anderem auch Efdemin, Marcel Dettmann oder den von mir sehr geschätzten Agnès als Produzenten/Remixer in seinen Reihen weiss.
  "Not Trying To" heisst die EP und gleichzeitig auch der erste Track auf der A-Seite. Jedesmal, wenn ich ihn höre, fühle ich mich unweigerlich in eine (us-amerikanische) (Gross-)Stadt versetzt. Ein einsamer Strassenmusikant, steht leicht gebeugt an einer grossen Strassenkreuzung. Um ihn herum herrscht geschäftiges Treiben, doch er scheint davon unberührt. Sein eingängiger Jazz setzt einen Kontrapunkt zu diesem pulsierenden Leben. "First Time" ist dagegen um ein vielfaches reduzierter. Aufschwingende Synthesizer-Akkorde werden für den rhythmischen Hintergrund eingesetzt, und eine weibliche Stimme flüstert die hallversehenen Worte "Ich will es nicht verstehen". Irgendwie verspult. Auf "One Too Many" arbeitet Ekkohaus stark mit den Elementen eines Jazz-Drumsets und flösst dem "Midnight Shuffle" mit dem Gitarren-Einsprengsel den Funk ein.
  Wer sich diese EP einmal angehört hat, kann leicht nachvollziehen, wenn clone records schreiben: "In the vein of Reboot, Lemos and Nick Curly, but with a bit more bite" (http://clone.nl/item15519.html). "Not Trying To" hat Biss. Definitiv!"

Having spent the better part of the last three years on sabbatical from releasing records, St. Plomb (Vincent Kolb to the family he nurtured in the meantime) fiercely assures fans his creative and producing faculties are still sharp on the long awaited return, “Escape Run” on Brut! He was last spotted with production partner Crowdpleaser, zig-zagging around the globe in support of their critically acclaimed and sonically diverse debut album, 2006. So it’s with great pleasure that I report St. Plomb’s latest retains the eccentric, non-linear style which made him such an intriguing producer in the first place.
The limited edition “Escape Run” is a treat for the enemies of predictability in dance music, melding disparate themes in coherent if unanticipated ways. The title track has listeners barreling between ricocheting chords and potbellied bass notes, crawling through worming progressions and hi-hat seizures, and marveling at effusive organ patterns, all without sounding random. After recovering enough to flip the record, the more danceable forms of “Saturnic Night Access” greet dizzy listeners. Its bed of laconic organ chords beckon before yanking back the covers to reveal a dance floor, breaking the minor chords into jaunty progressions. Finding still more room for hyperactive arpeggios, glowing pads and the feverish cries of a faraway bandleader, “Saturnic Night Access” finds St. Plomb rejecting the dullness of much contemporary “deep” house in favor of a Theo Parrish-style deconstruction. Constantly in upheavel, the “Escape Run” EP is not for the faint of heart and must be deployed thoughtfully, lest it bring the dance floor to screeching halt. But one can hardly fault St. Plomb for being ambitious and full of ideas for his first record back, especially one this engrossing. Hopefully he’s saved some of each for forthcoming solo releases and Crowdpleaser collaborations.

So beschreibt beispielsweise Gabriel Roth in der aktuellen Ausgabe der de:bug (http://de-bug.de/mag/6660.html) sehr schön die nicht zu vernachlässigende Anzahl DJs, Produzenten und Label im französischsprachigen Teil dieses Landes. Dort tummeln sich neben Agnès und seinem Imprint Sthlmaudio Recordings, das auch hier schon sehr oft Berücksichtigung fand, DJs und Produzenten wie Ripperton, Crowdpleaser, Dachshund, Quenum oder Chaton, die sich in den letzten Jahren eine eigene Nische erarbeiten konnten, in der sie ihr eigenes Konzept von elektronischer (Club-)Musik entwerfen, behaupten und deutliche Ausrufezeichen setzen konnten.
  Einer jedoch blieb in diesem Artikel unerwähnt, und zwar St. Plomb, der ursprünglich aus Lausanne stammende DJ und Produzent. Weshalb dies so ist, ist mir ein Rätsel. Vielleicht, weil es in den vergangenen Jahren etwas ruhiger um ihn war; vielleicht, weil er so oft lediglich als Co-Produzent von oben bereits erwähntem Crowdpleaser aufgeführt wurde? Ihn, St. Plomb, der in den frühen 90er-Jahren zunächst die Clubs mit Funk und Hip Hop bespielte, musikalisch festzuhalten und zu verorten, fällt schwer. Minimal sind seine Produktionen nicht, sie mit dem Beiwort "deep" zu versehen, würde unter den Heads wohl zu gegenseitig sich zerfleischenden Diskussionen führen. Also lassen wir's doch! Denn eines steht fest: in seinen EPs und Remixen stecken eine unglaubliche Energie, Lebens- und Spielfreude. Seine Kreationen sind experimentierfreudig und beinhalten eine Menge kurioser Gedanken. Und den Funk vergisst er dabei nie. Wie könnte er auch, als ehemaliger Funk- und Hip Hop-DJ.
  So war ich positiv überrascht und erfreut, zu vernehmen, dass er in diesem Herbst aus seiner kreativen Schaffenspause heraustritt, um - zunächst auf Brut! Records - an die Hochzeiten der Jahre vor 2006 anzuknüpfen. "Escape Run" heisst die auf 250 Kopien limitierte, einseitig bespielte 12". Und wenn er hiermit ein Fluchtlauf antritt, dann höchstens einen aus der Langeweile der Vorhersehbarkeit mancher zeitgenössischer Produktionen.
  Auf "Escape run" beschreitet er einen spielerisch schrägen Weg, auch wenn er diesen Track auf einem traditionellen House-Fundament aufbaut. Feingliedrige, jazzig anmutende Schlagzeugspielereien, insbesondere mit den Hi-Hats, gehen einher mit warmen Orgel-Sektionen, Chords, pumpenden Kickdrums und Bassnoten, die herzschlagtief aus der Erde zu kommen scheinen. Für "Saturnic Night Acces", ebenfalls auf der A-Seite (da "one sided"), könnte auch ein gut gelaunter Theo Parrish Pate gestanden haben. Die in Erscheinung tretenden Schreie erinnern mich an einen älteren afroamerikanischen Herrn, den ich während meines letzten USA-Aufenthalts tagein, tagaus an einer Strassenecke stehen und "roasted kernels" verkaufen sah - beim ersten Hören wirr, setzen sie einen tiefschwarzen und seelenvollen Kontrapunkt zu dem im übrigen unnachgiebig voranstampfenden klassischen Housebeat mit zartleiser Conga-Perkussion im Hintergrund.

St. Plomb gehört seit jeher zu den Großen der Schweizer Szene; nun veröffentlich er erstmals auf dem britischen Label brut!. Organisch blubbert und treibt der Titeltrack dahin, durch kreisende Bewegungen und plätschernde Hi-Hats und Claps baut er einen anziehenden Groove, der einem gut und gerne ein Lächeln auf die Lippen zaubert. Die zweite Seite klingt mehr nach souligen Oldschool-House und weiß ebenso zu erfreuen. (Ein anderer House-Held, der auch auf brut! releast, nämlich der Deutsche Drei Farben House, gastiert am 7.11. im Rahmen von Bing Bang im Wiener Flex, was als Termin an dieser Stelle allen ans Herz gelegt sei.)

St. Plomb - Escape Run [brut! 12]

"White man mistake funk" is the tag on Taron Trekka's biography. Apt words. Because it sure isn't funky, it seems like there are plenty of "mistakes" and, well, dudes are white. Aside from the white thing which I have no particular opinion on, these are very good things. Daniel Müller-Sachs and Andreas Kriester's music, like the most delicious minimal techno, benefits from feelings of dislocation, unease, mistakes. " Rawing Sadda" comes out the gate with all of them, like a lumbering giant taking its first steps of the day after a long night of drinking. After it finally seems to get into a groove, you're met with plenty of sounds that may or may not appear again. That, and a voice pitched down mighty low that mutters about something.
The thing about "Rawing" and "Swing Swing," the track that follows, is that they feel incredibly slow. Although both hover around 120 BPM, the duo seem to occupy their own space, one in which you begin to lose your sense of time quite quickly. Needless to say, very few producers are capable of pulling this off, and it speaks directly to the possibilities of "white man mistake funk" that Trekka have been able to do it consistently over their past few releases. If you haven't checked these guys out yet, now's the time.

  This year, over and over again we encountered the idea that Minimal could be fought with House. From time to time, one can agree with this argument, but more often it's purely a strategical decision that has very little to do with reality. The new Landesvatter on Brut! unambiguously proves this point. Is it House? Is this Minimal? These are not really relevant questions. What it is about, is the depth of the tracks, the question being whether the tracks have consistency. And that's exactly what "Nome" and "Hausse" have. Anthems that come from very deep below and give the sensation that one should anew discover the Floor over and over again. Arp Aubert and Taron-Trekka remix the originals in a congenial way with a clear sensibility for the smallest details.

  Se trata de un trabajo facturado por el proyecto germano Landesvatter, compuesto por dos tracks, acompañados cada uno de ellos, de una remezcla, y que se mueven en terrenos harto elegantes y delicados.
  El primero de los temas, llamado Nome, se trata de una pieza de tech house psicodélico, en el que los momentos acidos se alternan con sonidos mas ciberdelicos, pero con una amplia mira hacía el tech house mas profundo y cósmico, venido de detroit, con sus consabidos toques galácticos, pero sin dejar de lado el lado mas cercano al house de chicago.
  La remezcla de este track - Nome (Arp Aubert remix) - viene firmada por el proyecto Arp Aubert, tras el que están los artistas Marco Niemerski, mas conocido como Tensnake, y Stephan Lorenz. Este dúo se lleva el track a terrenos mucho mas groovies, sacrificando el lado cósmico, en pos de darle un toque eminentemente funkoide, mas cercano al sonido deep house de chicago o new york, al estilo de gente como Blaze o Larry Heard. Unos sutiles toques tribales ponen la guinda a esta elegante versión.
  El segundo de los tracks, llamado Hausse, supone un cambio de discurso bastante curioso, ya que nos encontramos ante un tema más alejado de la pista de baile, y centrado, sobre todo, en los sonidos mas horizontales. Enormes momentos atmosféricos y unos ritmos cercanos al lounge, son los ingredientes de esta pieza, que guarda cierta relación con sonidos mas cercanos al ambient experimental y a la idm que al tech house en sentido estricto, sin dejar de mirar, en ningún momento al lado mas oscuro y planeador del sonido detroit.
  En cuanto a la remezcla de este segundo track - Hausse (Taron-Trekka remix) - , el encargado de la misma es Taron-Trekka, un habitual de la casa que se lleva el tema a terrenos mas bizarros y sintéticos, confeccionando una curiosa pieza de lounge psicodélico, con momentos muy jazzisticos y divertidos.
  Desde luego, se trata de un maxi a tener en cuenta, si lo que se busca son sonidos diferentes, pero sumamente elegantes y de muy grata escucha, es decir, pura esencia brut!
