So, yesterday, I grabbed the track "Herbert" out of the special section of the Vault where I've been storing a couple of finished tracks that I think will work quite well when Spooky Week comes around.  I did that because I didn't feel like I could finish THIS track in time to post it yesterday, and posting "Herbert" instead, gave me the time I needed to finish it.

I'd actually started this track soon after sourcing some of the news samples for the track "Rammifications" (the track posted the day before "Herbert" posted)...when I learned that the front man for Nitzer Ebb, Douglas McCarthy, had died.    

This hit me hard because I've always been a fan of and inspired by Nitzer Ebb, one of the best EBM (Electronic Body Music) bands of all time.  I used to sneak "Control I'm Here" into sets I did at mainstream clubs (it would mix surprisingly well with "Pump Up The Jam" by Technotronic) and I put so much Nitzer Ebb on mixtapes I'd make for people.  

I got to see Nitzer Ebb at First Avenue in Minneapolis when they were on their Belief tour.  (I bought a shirt--so, I had both a Nitzer Ebb "Belief" tour shirt and a George Michael "Faith" tour shirt--the 80s were a WEIRD time.)  It remains one of my favorite concerts that I've ever been to--minimal and powerful, with an audience that was far more diverse than I'd expected.  

My initial reaction was "No, he can't be dead"--and that's where the germ seed of this track sprouted from.  

At first, I wanted to make this a track that sounded like early Nitzer Ebb--but I've been trying to do that for almost 40 years and haven't gotten nearly as close to that ideal as I would want to yet.  This time was no different.  

As I always say, "Whatever target I'm aiming at, the only bullseye I hit is sounding exactly like Interbay."  

So, while there are hints of EBM, it is definitely more of an EBM/electro hybrid...and thus, it becomes yet another Interbay track that fits not particularly neatly into any of a dozen different subgenres.  I did try to push the bass as hard as I could--look at the waveform.  I HAVE WON THE LOUDNESS WARS!!  

Some of you will recognize the vocal sample, but if you don't--it isn't important to enjoy the track.  But I made a conscious decision not to take an image related to the sample for the thumbnail of this track.  

Instead, I decided for the second time (I believe--it is at least twice) to use a picture of me.  

Now, I maybe three times as old as most of the people on this platform (gulp), but that's not ACTUALLY a picture of me as I am right now.  I asked ChatGPT what they knew about me (they knew about my stand-up comedy career) and then I asked if they could show me what I would look like as a very old man.  

...and damn if it didn't do a good job of that.  Probably TOO good.  I mean looking at this is the cause of my LATEST existential crisis.  (It also suggests that, as decrepit as I am NOW, I'd better get myself out there immediately, if I have any hope of dating again before I look like THIS--or die before I get that far...)  

Ladies?  ;)  

If art is useful for either the artist or the audience, it must be to try to share emotions in hopes that doing so allows other people to understand either you, themselves, or others, a bit better.  

I am definitely not dead (at least, not as I write this.  Someday, this information will be inaccurate.  Hopefully not too soon.)  But I'm closer than I've ever been, and if there's anything I have to share...I'd better get at it.
