New year – new season!

Even though spring doesn’t seem quite around the corner yet, we are slowly getting out of our hibernation mood to get things rolling again. Therefore, we are back with a second season of Signs of Growth, a podcast series dedicated to promising artists from Belgium & abroad. 

For the first contribution of the year, we have the pleasure to present an all-vinyl set by Ben Kamal aka Hans Tofec, sharing with us his most recent and carefully dug out finds. Generally speaking, Ben Kamal was mostly known for his energetic and pumpy digital sets. But since the pandemic, a certain love for hunting for ‘black gold’ has grown on him and pushed him to go to record shops on a regular basis, either on his city trips or during his lunchbreaks at crevette records. 

Recorded on an ‘exceptionally quiet Sunday’ with a warm Brüxsel Jardin memory in mind, Ben Kamal mixed his musical revelations into a forward paced, bleepy and enigmatic set. With its minimalistic and demanding approach, this set is the perfect introduction to a new podcast story and the right foretaste of an upcoming open air season. Enjoy ♡

As a current curator and resident @ Colombian sweetspot “Rio Hostel”, as well as on EOS radio together with Unai Trotti, she keeps exploring manifold soundscapes in order to 'unlock the body and free the mind'. Summer has finally arrived in the city of Brussels and we have the perfect mix to go with the sunrays and the following open’air season. We are in a festive mood and can’t wait to celebrate with you and serve you some of the finest deejays which are currently around.

Our newest contribution is by the up-and-coming DJ Rino, fellow pinguin and planet inhabitant of the Brussels’ underground cosmos. With his smiley and energetic presence, he has been all over the city and deservedly so. Rino’s sets are uplifting & catchy, not leaving anyone behind but making sure everyone gets his prescribed dose of positive vibrations. When Rino takes to the decks, every track is carefully selected & mixed into a preferably long and aspirational set that leaves no dancer unmoved. With his wide and universal understanding of electronic music, he manages to annihilate the boundaries between genres and people, making us connect in a musical present of here and now.

First of all we hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, that the summer brings you joy and well-being.

August is already here, but where did July go? The speed of time reminds us of the most fundamental thing, to enjoy the present moment. To do so, we are happy to present you this new SOG podcast, elegantly performed by Mechelen based Tom Boets, to be listened here and now.

Describing himself as a Bon Vivant, Tom likes to discover the world. He gets a lot of positive energy from music and from spending time with his family and friends. 

It was around the age of 16 that Tom began to explore the nightlife scene, mostly core and acid-core parties, but also to buy and play his first vinyl records. It is not uncommon for Tom to spend hours playing vinyl records and listening to music with his fellow friends from Brussels. Accordingly, you wonâ€™t be surprised by his definition of fun : going back home after a work day and spend some time behind his DJ booth. 

Although he started with techno, his influences have never stopped evolving: minimal, house, techno, trance. Tom explores genres, past and present. From the 90's to nowadays, from the famous classics to the rarest plate, this podcast is the witness of his creativeness and his flexibility.

Olivier Schacht has been busy writing the fourth chapter of our story. Olivier is a close friend. He works at our favourite bar "Le Fontainas" and since years he spends long hours at home selecting the finest playlists so the people can enjoy not only a nice drink and good food but also discover something fresh for the ears. Olivier puts the music on the ipod. Olipod he became.. and so he remained master of ceremony at Fontainas. Since his wide musical knowledge always fascinated us. We asked him to put this podcast together. From new to old here's his story.

After a childhood marked with memories of being always involved and in love with music, Yentl started to play records as a young adult in 2006.   She got bitten by the bug a few years earlier during her explorations of the Belgian electronic music scene. Though drum and bass provided her with the very first extremely uplifting experiences, discovering artists like Vitalic, Bookashade, Luke Slater, Sven Vath and especially James Holden lead her into the direction of minimal house and techno. 
 
Completely unexperienced at the time she bought her first records at Music Man (Gent) - but deeply inspired by the surprising profundity and potential of electronic music - she got on her way to develop the versatile style and spontaneous vibes she puts down today. 

Her dj sets could be described as a confusing cocktail of softness and roughness with emotion and energy as two key elements in the selection she brings forward. Though her passion for underground house music only grew stronger over the years, she loves just as much to dig into a wide spectrum of genres with jazzy chill out sets or dreamy ambient sessions. Connected to crews and clubs such as Livingroom 808, Funke, Roots of Minimal and the Void, she definitely became a force to be reckoned with in the Belgian scene.

As the leaves keep falling, we are calmly heading to the end of our podcast series and preparing for winter hibernation. The year has entered the third phase of the solar cycle, implying a time of transitions, changes and new perspectives. 
 
In order to guide you into this new phase, we would like to share a special contribution by our devoted dancer, loyal supporter and forever friend Joëlle aka Mink!. Being not only a witty, curious and sensitive listener, her creative approach revolves around a particular concept and belief. Music is a recurring source of inspiration and a significant tool for self discovery; its purpose is not only recreational - but also cleansing and restorative.
 
With these key elements in mind, she has conceived ‘Jahnahata nada’ for us, a sonic allegory which embodies the mental image of a dancing snake, translating a balancing exercise of the different human energy flows and more precisely their passages through the ‘Anahata’, the heart chakra.
 
The process of selecting and assembling tracks into one hour of various noises and sounds has a catalytic effect on her thoughts. The latters are then structured and materialized into sound waves, juxtaposing various settings into one single, sonic, landscape. In harmony and unification, rhythms and sounds are aligned to the heartbeat and navigate from terrestrial cavities to higher and psychedelic spheres in order to find steadiness within. It’s a quest which aims to reunite all the flows from bottom to top, from body to mind, earth to air - cultivating a feeling of wholeness in order to ‘discover, understand and feel’ the happenings of life. 
 
Ultimately, the lessons and understandings harvested from these energetic unions are precious; they are immutable but evolutive, yet eternal and thereby golden.

Anta Dion is a young artist from Marseille.
Now based in Berlin after a period spent in Switzerland carefully building his a musical maturity in production and deejaying.  
Creator of the DeadLine_ & HÖRBILD evenings which combine exhibitions, dj sets and and live musicians, Anta is inspired by a wide range of musical genres including Jazz, Hiphop and House. Whether mixing as Anta Dion or BRAD PITCH, it’s safe to say he is a disciple of the raw groove.

Tomhas embraced music from the early age of 12, finding comfort, guidance and an escape from his sometimes chaotic childhood. Playing music helped him find peace during difficult times and was his loyal companion in good moments. 

Although house and techno are his solid foundation, his musical taste is constantly evolving. Experimenting with deep, minimal, progressive, dub infused or electro tracks from both past era’s as new.

With his records, he crafts mesmerizing stories through his DJ sets, creating a unique soundscape tailored to the atmosphere of the moment. 
He takes you on a journey, carefully transitioning between different tracks to build energy and evoke emotion.

As a producer, he changed his point of view after more than a decade of chasing non existing measurements. He developed a new sense of creativity where he combines his sequencer, drummachines, romplers, and synths, with which he's been able to produce some solid work. In the last couple of months, this already resulted in releases on the Fixed:Composite VA and a solo EP on The Void Project, where he's been receiving much praise for his work.

Over the last 2 decades, Tomhas played a variety of well known clubs and events in and around Belgium. Including some passages at our own Brüxsel Jardin gatherings. So we are delighted to have him featured on our Sign Of Growth series.

La dame au chapeau est de retour de vacances prolongées en Amérique Latine. Sur sa route elle a croisé un étrange personnage plutôt intéressant nommé arkadiusz. Ce petit bonhomme Mexicain venant du Guadalajara jouant des beats électroniques sur son petit tambour rendu notre dame tellement heureuse qu'elle décida de sortir sa baguette magique et de le transformer en podcast pour le ramener à Bruxelles. Et donc le voici, straight from Mexico, et pour vos oreilles seulement. Enjoy!

MADAME CHAPEAU N°9 - KARETE BU

A new year a new season!

Since the COVID-19 crisis is currently preventing us from organising our beloved garden encounters, we decided to launch a new podcast serie: signs of growth -representing the continuous cycle of evolution and the growth of new ideas and projects, despite the current situation which keeps our events on hold (for now)...

For this first episode, we invited Nathan Øye, former resident and one of the founders of Brüxsel Jardin. Here are a few words of his own as an opening to the serie:  

' We started the project together with Teiva back in 2010. Not really knowing what we were getting into and trying to bring something new to the Brussels scene : Building a community. Brüxsel Jardin wouldn't have become what it is today without the help and support of all our closest friends. The events didn't only shape a new wave in the electronic music scene of the city, but more importantly gave birth to a big family of like-minded, open-minded people standing for unity and acceptance. And thus creating an immensely strong energy. I will forever be grateful to have had the opportunity to help shape that movement.

I was responsible for the artistic direction and bookings, as well as sound & light logistics. We were always trying to make every single event a unique experience people would remember. Having been the resident DJ up until 2015 was a mind-blowing experience on its own which pushed me further as an artist and motivated me to move to Berlin and write a new story of my own. 

I learned a lot, I cried, I laughed, burned out, and got back up. Brüxsel Jardin wasn't merely a project to me. It was my daily life and an experience I will cherish forever.

It's comforting knowing the project lives on in good hands. Looking forward to where the next generation will take us.

Here we are again.

For our second episode, we invited SOUS:SOL label owner, producer and deejay Karla Böhm to take us on a musical journey. Karla aka Fanny was born in 1992 in Liège, Belgium, where she made her first appearances behind the decks. At present, she is a well known figure in Brussels and makes regular appearances in the city. If she isn’t playing music, working on her label or on graphic design projects, Karla keeps travelling around Europe in order to widen and refine her personal conception of sound. 

We admire her concise and profound sens for groove and melodies and are therefore very excited to present this podcast to you, witness of her curious and creative mind.

We would also like to benefit from the occasion and welcome Fanny into the Brüxsel Jardin family, as she is part of the collective from this season on, welcome Fanny! ♡

Dear friends, we are back with a new episode, this time by the inventive mind  Pascal Guerini aka Paco. You might have seen him swirling around at Studio CityGate where he is spending most of the time in his studio. 

A close friend of his wrote a few words about him :

'Paco grew up in a pack of free party dogs in the south of France. As a teenager, he made his debut on some of the wildest teknivals in Europe. A real mad dog, he draws his supernatural energy from music. With time, he plunged himself in the depths of micro-house, and emancipated himself from his all traced out future by the (tribe family) / or (tribe music). When he moved to Brussels, he became a sound engineer and set up a recording studio where he created a synergy in order to connect various Belgian musical networks. But unable to deny the spirit of the Tribe and to contain its wild nature, he continues to promote free festivities, which are to him a lot more than just mere festivities. Thanks to his spiritual and political sensitivity, he seeks to convey magical experiences and ideals of freedom through the power of music.'

The seeds keep on growing, episode 4 is out!

This time with our dear friend Camiel Hermans, originally from Antwerp and living in Brussels for several years now. Usually, he amazes us with his drawings, but recently, he has impressed us as well with his musical intuition. Camiel's universe is easygoing, silly but meticulous, exactly what we need to take a break from our daily routine.  

Here's a little description by himself, telling us how this podcast came into existence: 

'One bright Saturday afternoon me and my friend Jakob where in a festive mood. We ended up recording a couple of hours, mixing back to back. Somewhere halfway the session our better halves arrived in the room, cracked open a beer and started dancing through the living room. It was a party.

We decided to cheat on our homework, and use this collaborative mix for the podcasts we promised to record. Thus the result was split in two.

Expect last minute track selection and some goofy curve balls. Jakob will publish the other half soon with the lovely people of Ojoo Music!

Dear everyone, true summer has eventually reached our city and we are sadder than ever, not being able to share the sunlight with you. As a little consolation, here is the fifth episode or fifth sign of growth, as the cycle of life keeps on doing what he always does, moving on. 

This time, we are happy to present Kim Kenis to you, who caught our attention in a dark basement of a Sweat & Regret party, playing a smooth but thrilling warm up which set the tone for the whole night. Micro techy on the outside and housy at heart, she easily manages to put the crowd into a trancelike dancing state that nobody wants to leave voluntarily. 

With her accurateness, she managed to put together a soundscape which we would probably be experiencing on one of our events... if the virus wasn’t still around. 

We would therefore like to remind you to be cautious and mindful about the current health situation. It’s true that it’s hot and more than ever we have the urge to be outside and meet up with many people to feel connected. But as you know, things look tricky on planetary level and it is each and everyone's duty as a human being to fight the virus and prevent it from spreading.

Focus on your closest beings for now & as always, take care of each other + never stop loving ♡

Dear garden lovers,

We are back with the 6th episode of our signs of growth series, this time with a podcast debut by our true friend and Brüxsel Jardin resident Max Do. 

Maxime was born and raised in Brittany and was travelling a lot around France at a young age. At some point, he felt the need to keep widening his mindset and decided to pursue his journey outside of his homeland. 
Openness and wide array are keywords in his human nature but also in his musical understanding. Thanks to his family, his first influences can be traced back to jazz, blues, new wave and dub. Ever since, he has been sensitive to multiple music genres, depending on the cycle of life he’s been travelling through. When it comes to electronic music, he chooses lighthearted but thorough bass lines, mellow and warm breaks, dancing a tango with dreamy synth lines. 

Just in time for the weekend, this podcast is a pleasurable audio guide for your garden gatherings or for a solo zone out session with your headphones.

Dear friends, after a short break we are back and excited to share our 7nd episode with you, smoothly but ambitiously composed by Sarah alias Shy. You might have seen her on the dancefloors camouflaging behind her camera but you most certainly haven’t heard her play yet. We are therefore very proud and  grateful to be able to host her very first podcast!

Here is a little introduction about her:

Music has been a major component in Sarah’s earliest memories, spending her teenage hood in front of MTV, listening to cassettes such as Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’. It didn’t take her long to get hooked on electronic music, dancing to house and drum and bass in the early 2000’s. 

Soon after that, feeling the need to organize, she hosted free parties and opened a club (the ‘structure béton’). Knowing Sarah, this makes sense because experiencing music on a dancefloor has always strongly shaped her musical instinct. The Belgian Fuse club, where she worked as a photographer, also played a main role in her education. She got inspired by meeting and hearing many artists perform and was able to travel and to discover other club cultures, such as Berlin and Moscow. These experiences have expanded her intuition and have made her discover the sound through which she defines herself as a person. Since 2006, Sarah fell madly in love with minimal, worshiping artists like Rhadoo and clubs like Hoppetosse. 

Nowadays, when she is looking for music, she reconnects to moments she experienced in the club, when the sound has filled her with tingles and joy. But even after years of bathing in this microcosm, the decision to start playing and sharing her selection is a recent ‘coming-out’. Being in the center of attention have never been part of her ambitions, actually quite the contrary is the case. She has always fully dedicated herself to the promotion of artists she truly believes in, such as Karla Böhm and Issa Maïga, and has hosted events and published podcasts with Rôti. 

At present, she still supports the local scene with her recent project Heeze, record label, booking agency and ‘organization for electronic gatherings’ (https://soundcloud.com/beheeze). The actual sanitary crisis has even intensified her passion for electronic music, keeping in mind the influential and inspiring moments on the dancefloor(s). 

Before we send you off again to your daily life, we would like to share a quote by Sarah which we find very accurate and which you should keep in mind, even when the days seem dark: 

‘In this global chaos the most important thing is to do things that make us happy. It is a difficult time since our realm is at a standstill, but it is a huge opportunity to reinvent ourselves and to reconnect with the essence of the human being and clubbing.’

Dear friends,

Autumn has reached the city now and the virus is still around, making the future still so very uncertain. Therefore, we consider it as our duty to provide you with more music which grounds us into the present and which fills us with joy and comfort. Remember, there is always light, even at the end of the darkest of tunnels. 

For this 8th episode, we present Brüxsel Jardin's head honcho Gurl (http://soundcloud.com/j1ll) and her 'compensation podcast' to a lost season. Her favourite island inhabitant islas (https://soundcloud.com/islasaliasailsa) has kindly written a few words about her and this episode: 

'Although it’s probably not a word anyone wants to be associated with at the moment, Gurl (or Jill as you might know her when she isn’t DJing but doing a million other things like archeology, photography, and interviewing people about their collections on LYL radio), is contagious. Her positivity, energy, and wisdom are catching, and the same thing can be said about her approach to music.

Having taken on the challenge of organising, running, and curating Brüxsel Jardin since the 2019 season (after countless previous editions as a dancer, helper, artist-carer, and ever-smiling presence), alongside Ben, Thomas, Fanny, and Amandine, Gurl had a long list of lineups ready to tempt and challenge the crowd with. 

This February, due to the outbreak of Covid-19, she returned prematurely early from a trip to visit her friend and dj Aymen in Chengdu. It all seemed so distant, and no one had a clue how the year was to unfold. Yet here we are, tens of Brüxsel Jardin parties skipped over Summer 2020, but the urge to play music, to share, to cultivate friendship, to stay positive and to dance can’t just be erased from Gurl’s fingertips. 

This mix is an ode to all those unhappened moments. It’s not a solitary living-room podcast, but an imagined Brüxsel Jardin closing set, played from 9 til 11pm as the sun would have gone down and those cute little strings of lightbulbs would pop on. Dear garden lovers,

The year 2020 is (finally) coming to an end. No one had thought that the year would unfold as it did: unexpected, challenging but no less enlightening. We are ready for a new cycle, staying open to the unknown while keeping learned lessons in mind. 
Although we weren’t able to meet this year, we surely haven’t forgotten about you. As a somewhat substitute, we launched our ‘signs of growth’ podcast serie in order to keep cultivating your gardens, may they be individual or collective. 

In order to accompany you into your next year, we are happy to launch the next podcast by the radiant Issa Maïga. You might know him from Lessizmore parties hosted at Fuse’s Room 2 or from the exquisite Rôti nights, where he was regularly spinning and smiling. At present, he is related to the promising HEEZE collective from Brussels. Due to his sixth sense for detail, his mixes are subtly but surely hypnotizing, every track being carefully selected to build a loopy tunnel of submerging basslines and fiery percussions. 

We hope this mix has the same effect on you as it had on us, bringing sweetness to the here and now and hope for what is to come. Happy Happy New Year. ♡

With a strong commitment to electronic music and to the purpose of bringing people together, we use our hands and hearts to create a wondrous daytime experience for you. We pick our artists delicately but with determinedness, not at all comparable to a business transaction, but with the intention to build an ongoing connection as a community, a family.
Year by year, the Brüxsel Jardin collective keeps on growing and evolving, but the main purpose remains the same: reuniting people to celebrate life, love and friendship, because ‘love is where your friends are’.
