"Blue River" recorded August 25, 1927 by Frankie Trumbauer's Orchestra. This recording has been digitally altered to extract Seger Ellis's vocal and provide a clearer presentation of Bix's cornet obbligato. (As part of an April Fool's gag, a few other parts of the performance have been slightly altered to give the illusion of an alternative take, but the Bix solo remains unchanged from the original record.)

Recorded May 15, 1928 and issued on Columbia 50068-D. This version has been digitally altered to remove the vocal by Austin Young so that Bix Beiderbecke's cornet may be more clearly heard.

My Melancholy Baby - Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra (vocal removed)

I recently acquired this 7-inch reel-to-reel tape (mono, 7.5 ips) containing selected performances from the 1972 and 1973 Ragtime Society Bash in Toronto. This tape is a compilation dubbed from another source, and unfortunately, the person who recorded it failed to note the individual performers. Working from 1972 and 1973 newsletters of the Ragtime Society ("The Ragtimer") which feature Bash re-caps, I've been able to positively identify a few of the performers and guess a few of the others, but some still remain unidentified. From 1936, the ultimate "territory" jazz! Recorded in Japan, this is Noriko Awaya singing with the Columbia Nakano Rhythm Sisters and the Columbia Jazz Band. The song praises a fashionable, cute girl who frequents the Ginza section of Tokyo (a Japanese "Girl From Ipanema"?). She's warm, bright, and brings the breath of spring wherever she goes. Great band!
