I often feel like the world is korzybski's "unspeakable" world and I can't really say anything about it. in a more basic way though I sometimes just don't know what to say or how to say it, and even that expressing myself in general is silly luxury.

No Good At Talking (Band Version)

This first "song of the week" is a total make-over of some of my best lyrics, called "Don't Wait Up". I have done several versions of this song because none of them have ever quite nailed it, but also because when I enter a new phase musically, it is comforting to take something you've written that you know and love and see how the new elements work with it. I guess it seems crazy to keep rehashing one lyric, but I think this is the final take: it's simple, upbeat, and kind of hypnotizing, and when I play it live this way I get into a really reflective, nostalgic space. The song is about being on a totally different page (spiritually?) than even the people you love most, and you are trying to play your part but also be yourself. The admission in this song is "I love you, I am doing my best for you, but in the end you're going to have to be you and I am going to be alone." Recorded 9/9/12

a very old song... sophomore year of college? a strange mix of saves the day, van morrison, number girl, and wilco...

I am proud of the guitar solo... it's nothing spellbinding but it speaks to me. 

I wrote the lyrics with my sister... she thought of the first few lines and I finished the rest. 

4th of November

this is one of my favorite songs of mine, even though there is no hook, no chorus, no fancy playing... and it is repetitive, with a 5 (verse dylan-style) lyric and 3 minute tag... the lyrics mean a lot to me. I wrote them after an intense night of psychological exploration... basically, I learned to look at life as  a moment to moment series of surprises. if you knew what was coming in life, or had any sense of certainty, you would have to commit suicide out of boredom. it'd be like playing a game in which you know the final score going into it and having all the highlights handed to you at the start. there would be no point. the more crazy things happen, the bumpier the ride, the more interesting and worthwhile it is. in fact I think this is the point of view of faith, that if you trust this life only to surprise you you are investing in it adventure, gratitude, and peace.
