Bside Incoming: Andrea Montalto (Club Mediterraneo)

We’re very pleased to welcome the incredible Andrea Montalto back to the Bside Podcast, making Bside history as the first double booking. His last appearance was a master class of the mellow live at the Bside HQ, this time, however he’s sending us the good vibes all the way from Sicily.

Andrea remains an integral part of the Edinburgh scene, as a co-founder of the city’s leading community radio station EHFM, a record dealer, and resident of the Cowgate’s finest establishment Sneaky Pete’s. These accolades earning him the right to share the decks with very best: Young Marco, Gilles Peterson, Stump Valley, and Nu Guinea.

Now back in Italy, his radio career continues with Mondonero and he will soon be managing Malamore Records from June. We’re always excited to hear where Andrea Montalto’s selection will take us and we were not disappointed!

In contrast to the ambient mood of his live podcast, we get a glimpse into the jazzy/Italo/Afro infused disco energy he can bring to the party.

Next up we are delighted to have London based music aficionado and friend of the label Johnny Aux for mix #110. For those living under a rock, Johnny is a member of Paranoid London, Sworn Virgins, Decius and the rest... which we won't go into 😎 very little introduction required.

The recording, taken from our Kutika record release party at Kristina Records is a dubbed out space exploration, seamlessly blended throughout with hints of Johnny's signature acid sound creeping in towards the end.

Mr. Ho’s 宀 residency gave us yet an another glorious nights last summer. A sort of a natural born league of his own, we had the wonderful Knopha, Xiamen’s DJ extraordinaire and an important club music voice of China. We’re not just giving out the “voice” title easily, it’s more that Knopha really speaks in tongues when it comes to all the styles, genres, fantasies and snippets of reality he incorporate in his sets so this naturally resonated with many.

Chris has been a predominant figure in the queer dance scenes in America and in Europe over many years having represented his mainstay party, now label, Spotlight from L.A., the Club Toilet Crew from Detroit and now residing in Berlin the last couple of years where he holds down regular slots at the city's major clubbing institution Berghain / Panorama Bar (most notably the party Snax which takes place there). Chris has dug deep  and worked hard with these residencies to showcase the queer roots of house, techno, disco, and other forms of dance music.

An exploration into the the back-catalogues, the deepest depths, the darkest crevices of their collections. Returning with the spoils of this venture: their most cherished records and hidden gems, from the go-to club weapons to the rarely heard home-listening records, and everything in between.

Music is for sharing.

'By the early sixties, the song on the A-side was the 'hit' song that the record company wanted radio stations to play. The B-side would contain less radio friendly and less popular tracks. In our eyes the B-side is a true reflection of the producers taste in music, there is more personality on that side of the record'.
